    After the resounding 2017 successes of Beauty and the Beast, Wonder Woman and Girls Trip,and to a lesser extent Atomic Blonde and 47 Meters Down, can Kidnap break out as a scrappy, every mother’s nightmare, cheap b movie thriller that draws the female crowd out once again? She has not done too badly in this genre when she’s the star, she got The Call to $51m.

    How is Wind River dropping this weekend with so little fanfare? I should be being reading its praises or at least SOMETHING about it somewhere. You would think TWC would try to be getting Sheridan’s name out there. The guy is coming off of two well received projects, he has two recognizable stars. I saw about a dozen prerelease articles each for Landline and Ghost Story, how is this being released with barely a whimper?

    I kinda want to see Dark Tower. I’m sure I’ll see Detroit at some point. It’s sometimes hard to get up on a warm summer’s Saturday and think about seeing a heavy drama.

    And after all the raves and good press for Hell or High Water. I heard a review on npr earlier today and it sounds a little messy but utterly fascinating and I really want to see it. Probably see Detroit tomorrow.

    I know you can’t judge a movie by its trailer, but it’s interesting that Annapurna is releasing Detroit nationwide today and in three months will release a Death Wish remake that is already being called fascist and tone deaf. Their involvement means DW 2017 won’t be fascist trash right? Then again, Eli Roth. Seems like an odd movie for Annapurna.

    I don’t think they remade Death Wish, I think they remade Death Wish 3. Have you seen the trailer? The shift in tone is something I have NEVER seen before. Its like they expect people to watch it and go “Hey lets see Death Wish, that looks like fun.”

    Though the target audience will probably relate to the unintentional subtext of the trailer.

    “I am a failure as a man”
    “You need to buy a gun”

    I’ve never seen Death Wish 3. Best to keep it that way or is it so bad it’s good?

    Actually, I have never seen it either, its just that the first Death Wish was more thoughtful about Kersey’s descent into vigilantism, while the sequels simply found excuses to turn him into a killing machine, which looks like the route this adaption is taking.

    But the trailer starts as serious and tragic with Willis loosing his family to violence and then immediately shifts into wisecracking Last Boy Scout territory against the strains of AC/DC. He looks like the most genial vengeance seeker ever put on film.

    It appears that Annapurna had nothing to do with production and MGM simply needed a distributer after Paramount dropped out so Annapurna might just be involved to have something to do with their distribution team until they get a fuller slate of their own projects. I don’t think there is any hope that this film matches the quality of their other projects.

    And his script has been changed a lot hasn’t it Ray? Yeah the trailer is abysmal. I saw Roth say something about how this is so different because Willis is a normal guy and not an action hero, and then a few sentences later he says that Willis becomes an action hero by watching YouTube videos. I saw Detroit this morning and it was a little weird to see the Death Wish trailer before it.

    And I really miss having Willis on the big screen, its terrible that this is the vehicle that gets chosen. I am not the biggest Unbreakable fan but thought he was fantastic in it. Glass cant come soon enough.

    Death Wish 3 is batshit crazy and fun. Definitely worth a look if it’s accessible.

    I feel the same way about Unbreakable and would love to see Willis in a better role. Death Wish looks like the Steven C. Miller dreck he’s been making with a studio behind it.

    Also, saw American Assassin’s pointless red band trailer today. I’m sure it wasn’t all that long ago but I can’t remember the last time I saw a trailer that sold me less on the lead performer. No idea who this Dylan O’Brien dude is but he looks woefully miscast at best. Nothing he does looks remotely convincing to me. Pardon the tirade but I just saw it and it really stuck out.

    I actually saw Death Wish 3 in the theater. My parents took me. I had bad parents lol. But I remember loving it. It is wild and ridiculous stuff. Worth a look.

    Yeah. The Death Wish trailer, is just fucking abhorrent. I have no idea, why the fuck they would think this movie, is something people want to see… IN FUCKING NOVEMBER! Here’s to it getting it’s ass kicked, and being quicking thrown in a god damn Wal-Mart 7.99 blu-ray bin.

    Seriously, it’s totally fucking Death Wish 3, and Death Wish 3 is RACIST AS FUCK! Fucking Eli Roth. It’s bad enough we have to deal with WHITE NATIONALIST RUNNING THE GOVERNMENT. It’s not like any of us, need to plunk down 10 bucks or more, and pay to see it in a theatre. Fuck them, fuck this movie, and fuck the administration as fucking well.

    Isn’t a trailer supposed to draw attention to a movie? If that’s true, then all the moral outrage filling the internet over Death Wish (2017) means people are actually discussing a Bruce Willis flick. A quick glance at IMDB shows the last half dozen films he’s starred in: Vice; Extraction; Precious Cargo; Marauders; Once Upon a Time in Venice; First Kill
    Has anyone even heard of any of them? Those are the slim pickings you have at a RedBox machine late Saturday night.

    Sadly, as he’s an icon of my movie fanhood, Bruce looks like he’s all but given up at this point, and is just cashing out on DTV dreck while he can. 2012 (Moonrise Kingdom, Looper) now looks like his Indian Summer. Hopefully his reunion with Shyamanlan can turn things around, but he doesn’t strike me as someone who can have an abundant new act to his career in his sixties like Connery or Eastwood did.

    On-the-shelf-for-three-years “Kidnap” has a better opening weekend than “Detroit.”
    And on 800 less screens.
    Didn’t see that coming.

    Pete, all those you mentioned were straight to video I believe and are all from the same production company so they must have worked out a retainer like payment system to reimburse Willis to make the dreck. I would figure it is something similar to whatever Milineum has worked out with Cage and Cusack.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”
