The Weekend Report
The debut of the larkish The Hitman’s Bodyguard led the weekend with an estimated $21.7 million during an overall summer slump. The session’s other national release, Logan Lucky – Steven Soderbergh’s latest heist caper – charted third with $8 million.
Exclusive bows were led by an encouraging start for the L. A. riots drama Gook, at $29,700 from two screens. Crown Heights also looked hopeful with a $26,600 opener at three venues, but Sundance buy Patti Cake$ had a rocky debut of $66,300 from 14 auditions.
In international day-and-dates, there wre good openings for Telugu Anando Brahma of $278,000 and Hindi Bareilly Ki Barfi, which grossed $187,000. China’s The Adventurers had a soft landing of $62,900.
The national expansion of Wind River maintained strong per-screens. Ingrid Goes West also expanded well, while Brigsby Bear collapsed with the addition of 371 grown-p playdates.
Revenues for the frame dipped to below $100 million by a couple of notches that translated into a 19% erosion from last weekend. It lagged behind the 2016 session by 28% with no upward hiccups in sight until the mid-September opening of It. Last year the third weekend of Suicide Squad topped the charts with $20.8 million with newcomers War Dogs and Kubo and the Two Strings opening respectively to $14.7 million and $12.6 million.
The late season has left industry mavens despairing as summer box office sputters to its lowest point in a decade. The arrival of The Hitman’s Bodyguard wasn’t expected to exact a reversal of fortunes, with tracking that indicated a debut in the neighborhood of $20 million. It did marginally better than expected without any evidence of emerging as a late arriving breakout success. Studio exit tracking gave the film a slight male tilt of 52% with 70% of the audience aged 25 and older.
Expectations were also low for Logan Lucky that in the film itself is called “Ocean’s 7-Eleven.” It was projected in the area of $10 million in part to a distribution service deal closely handled by Soderbergh. But despite glowing reviews it fell short commercially and it didn’t help that it was competing with a film with comparable demographic appeal.
