The Weekend Report
The second weekend of The Hitman’s Bodyguard led with an estimated $9.9 million as summer ticket sales plunged to their lowest level in a decade.
Among new releases, animated Leap! ranked third in the lineup with a $4.8 million debut and Bruce Lee biopic Birth of the Dragon struggled to $2.5 million. In medium-wide release, a crisis of faith and viewers for All Saints gave a $1.6 million kneel. The revival of Terminator 2 also failed to melt with a $572,000 tally from 386 stereoscopic engagements. There was a significant expansion for Wind River that held up comparatively well.
In international day-and-date, a bright spots was Telugu Arjun Reddy with $827,000 from 95 venues. Hindi newcomers Vivegam and A Gentleman had dullish results. South Korea’s goofy youth cop action comedy Midnight Runners had a modest $85,100 launch at 25 sites. Otherwise, exclusive freshmen saw no glory.
Revenues for the session were just over $65 million, to record a slide of 32% from last weekend. Even including Saturday’s theatrical showings of the Mayweather-McGregor fight, estimated at $2.4 million, failed to enhance the picture. Box office sank 45% from 2016 when the opening of Don’t Breathe led with $26.4 million, with Suicide Squad in second with $12.2 million.
Leap! had scoured for an opening date for months. The French animated feature has already opened in the rest of the world, and grossed an impressive $75 million under its original title Ballerina. Pundits predicted a high end of $5 million but its prospects may have fared better earlier in the summer. Exit demos identified its audience as 75% female with its strongest demographic 17-years and younger at 26%.
Expectations were similarly grim for Birth of the Dragon with the high end set at $3 million. All Saints was expected to out-gross Dragon but its parishioners found alternative devotionals. The few and the brave were 59% female with 94% 25 and older.
Summer hits including Wonder Woman, Baby Driver and Despicable Me 3 added a significant screens in a last sprint for prime time viewer. The lack of commercial heft also allowed alternative fare including Ingrid Goes West, Good Time and The Only Living Boy in New York to secure hundreds of new playdates.
