The Weekend Report

Labor Day celebrations sterred clear of the multiplex as The Hitman’s Bodyguard shot up its third weekend, with an estimated $10.3 million for the three-day portion of the extended weekend (all figures are 3-days; updates tomorrow).

There were no wide releases but a couple of films debuted in a limited wide in what’s traditionally the year’s lowest-grossing holiday. The fortieth anniversary release of the 4K Close Encounters restoration opened in the lucky 13 spot with $1.8 million while the period thriller (as in the suspense over how long it’s taken to reach theaters) Tulip Fever grossed $1.2 million.

There was a limited run in Imax for the first two episodes of ABC’s “Marvel’s Inhumans” that grossed $1.2 million. A similar trial balloon occurred last year for the final season start of Game of Thrones. Other notables for the frame included the disappointing $171,000 start for the Lake Bell’s second directorial outing, the comedy I Do… Until I Don’t at 165 venues, and an encouraging single-screen start of $11,900 for the documentary Dolores.

In internatonal day-and-dates, the Mexican import Hazlo Como Hombre failed to translate at $1.1 million. Indian imports also had meh results including Hindi Baadshaaho and Shubh Mangal Savdhan that opened to $242,000 and $237,000 respectively and Telugu Paisa Vasool grossing $222,000.

Revenues for the session clocked in at roughly $75 million and got a 15% boost from last weekend. It was nonetheless a 24% decline from 2016 when the second weekend of Don’t Breathe led with $19.7 million.

Summer 2017 is coming to a close with the lowest-grossing record in decades and possibly the lowest attendance record in U.S. moviegoing history. It’s admittedly a subject for further research. A report on Labor Day will include an initial breakdown of summer box office.
