That Avengers trailer is a hell of a thing.

  2. JS Partisan says:

Here’s the fucked up thing: how many women, are on productions right now, that are still too scared to come out? How many fucking legends, have abuse stories that are going to come out? How is our president going to react, when #METOO is time’s person of the year? Right now, that’s who it should be.

  3. YancySkancy says:

The Keillor thing is frustrating. So far, we’re only getting his side, since MPR isn’t offering details. If he’s telling the truth and an innocent, unintentional touch (that was supposedly immediately apologized for and forgiven) is taking down his entire venerable career, it’s truly sad. And of course if he’s lying and mischaracterizing what happened, that’s sad too, and a terrible thing to do to his alleged victim. We’ll likely never know, so we’ll be left to decide which side of the asterisk to come down on (if any). But so far, the Lauer and Rose allegations seem far more convincing to me than this one, not that that’s worth much at the moment. (And I have no fan-boy attachment to Keillor; I barely know his radio work, though I did like the film he did with Altman quite a bit.)

  4. Stella's Boy says:

It was not unintentional and innocent Yancy. Don’t characterize it that way. He says he put his hand on her back and slid it up six inches (and he took advantage of a woman he read as vulnerable). She recoiled and he pulled away. That’s an intentional act and a highly inappropriate one. And the day before he was vociferously defending Al Franken in The Washington Post, which makes a whole lot more sense now. So we do know who is in the wrong here. There’s nothing to decide.

  5. PTA Fluffer says:

    >That Avengers trailer is a hell of a thing.

Looks like one of those overstuffed, heart-attack-special fast food burgers that quickly turns to rancid waste inside wholesome American guts.

  6. Pete B says:

Are they trying to crack the $100 million mark with Blade Runner 2049? It’s being re-released into theaters Friday.

  7. EtGuild2 says:

“So… Anything besides these guys happening in The News?”

Oh, just the usual, the President of the United States initiating a diplomatic incident by tweeting out racist/fascist staged propaganda videos.

  8. Sideshow Bill says:

It’s been a hell of a year. But we’ve almost made it through alive. Scarred, but alive. Almost.

I’ll admit the Infinity War trailer gave me some chills, especially the last shot. I’m a sucker for that Marvel stuff. But Kevin Smith saying it made him cry….good god man, grow up! I’m so tired of people like him being looked at as the “spokesmen” for geek stuff. Ive liked some of his films but he’s an overexposed man-child. And fuck TUSK. Fuck it right in the ass.

“#METOO is time’s person of the year? Right now, that’s who it should be”

    Damn right.

  10. Bulldog68 says:

I think there should be an opposite award, like #HIMTOO of the year, and someone good with a computer should do a composite pic of Moore, Lauer, Rose, Trump, Weinstein, Spacey, Louis, Conyers and Franken and any other public figure.

I will admit that I hesitated on including Franken in this list but he is part of the conversation unfortunately.

  11. EtGuild2 says:

    Russell Simmons.

    Franken now with 6 accusers.

    :'(

  12. Bulldog68 says:

by the time this is over there will be no male CEO’s and powerful celebrities left. Aye karumba.

  13. brack says:

Blade Runner 2049 is still in quite a few theaters in my neck of the woods somehow.

  14. John E says:

#MeToo with Rose McGowan, Ronan Farrow, Ashley Judd, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Rapp, Anthony Edwards, Asia Argento, Ellen Page, Corey Feldman, Angelina Jolie, Daryl Hannah, Bette Midler, Gretchen Carlson, Jessica Barth, etc., on the cover.

  15. Hcat says:

All these guys out of work and not another Alabama Senate seat open until 2022.

  16. Ray Pride says:

    Unavoidable.

  17. Js partisan says:

Somewhere out in the ether, MCA is nodding his approval to Russell Simmons being out to pasture. Fuck that guy, and fuck Al Franken. Get the fuck out, you dirty fuck.

  18. YancySkancy says:

Stella’s Boy: My “characterization” of the Keillor incident is simply based on how I interpreted his statement:

“I meant to pat her back after she told me about her unhappiness and her shirt was open and my hand went up it about six inches,” he said. “She recoiled. I apologized.”

I assumed he meant that he went to pat her back and inadvertently touched her bare skin. I guess it is rather ambiguously phrased though. At any rate, I highly doubt that he intended it as an admission of guilt. But my own statement is clear enough — if he’s lying, he’s scum.

  19. Stella Boy says:

He is scum either way. Not sure what’s confusing about that. A friend in need went to him, he read her as in distress, and he slid his hand up six inches while consoling her. It’s not ambiguous. Not to mention he’s painting himself as the victim here. Also a recent slate piece recounts a history of misogyny in his work among other highly objectionable behavior. Read it.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
