The Weekend Report
Thor: Ragnarok arrived with a thunderous estimate of $121.3 million to command about two of every three movie tickets sold over the weekend. That left a $17 million sliver for counter-programmer A Bad Moms Christmas, the other wide release. LBJ opened on a limited wide basis to a disappointing $1.1 million.
Exclusive newcomers were dominated by a powerful $372,000 launch for Lady Bird from four bedrooms while Last Flag Flying fluttered softly to $43,300 at a quartet of venues. Let There Be Light, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Florida Project were among effective expansions. Top Indian imports were Hindi Ittefaq and Telugu PSV Garduda Vega, which bowed to solid respective figures of $287,000 and $249,000.
Revenues for the frame approached $180 million and experienced a significant 139% climb from last weekend. It was still a 7% erosion from 2016 when debuts of Doctor Strange, Trolls and Hacksaw Ridge led the charge with respective openings of $85.1 million, $46.6 million and $15.2 million.
The coming of Odin’s favorite son was presaged last weekend when Ragnarok opened in 36 foreign climes to $109 million. The domestic debut appeared ready to bow with a six-figure number and studio reps notched its prospects around $110 million. Exit polling identified the opening audience as 56% male with 63% 25 and older. The 17-to-34 demographic comprised 50% of overall viewers. The film’s second weekend overseas added 19 markets and $150 million to its tally, propelled by a $55.6 million launch in China. Other debuting nations included a buoyant $10.8 million in Mexico, a staggering $5.2 million in India and Germany grossing $5.5 million.
On the heels of its sleeper success, the Bad Moms crew was expected to deliver about a $15 million weekend of yuletide cheer. It wisely chose to slip into the marketplace on Wednesday and grossed $4.5 million in two days.
