Surprised that “My Friend Dahmer” has done so well.
Found it mildly overrated, although the consistently underutilized (and undervalued) Anne Heche is very good as Dahmer’s mother.
I haven’t seen the My Friend Dahmer film yet but I remember not liking the graphic novel all that much. It was OK but didn’t offer any new insight or anything. I am interested in the film though.
Surprised Last Flag Flying has slipped through the cracks. Finally made it to my town and I saw it Friday afternoon. What a powerful and emotional ride. My heart broke for Steve Carrell’s character. Laurence Fishburne is always great to watch.
There was a couple that walked out…I’m guessing they might have expected a lighter movie.

Linklater just can’t get a break.
Lost his “inevitable” Oscar to Inarritu and “Birdman;” Paramount badly fumbled the release of “Everybody Wants Some!!;” and Amazon/Lionsgate has done an even worse job handling “Flag.”
In a just and equitable world, Linklater, the film and his cast would be in the heat of every Oscar conversation.

Is that 1% decline for CMBYN a good number? More than doubled it’s theaters but went (barely) down?

Was a bit disappointed to see some of the more tepid reactions to The Last Jedi from the initial audiences. I felt like if anyone could give some life and imagination to this new iteration of Star Wars it would be a real filmmaker like Johnson, and all the positive (or lack of negative?) energy coming out of Disney on it seemed to indicate as much, but it sounds like that may have been wishful thinking. Even the raves seem like mostly preconditioned auto-responses with no real feeling behind them. Some are even saying they didn’t like it as much as The Force Awakens, which seems inconceivable to me because The Force Awakens isn’t any damn good. I’ll go in with an open mind, but if this thing doesn’t work then I think I may be out on Disney-era Star Wars altogether.
So the Globes dropped their noms, no massive surprises other than Phantom Thread not getting a drama nod, though this may be how it is from here on out all acclaim for the film being heaped solely on Day-Lewis’ performance. Fully expect Lady Bird to take best comedy, but I don’t remember the last time that category was so competitive. I know to take the Globes with a grain of salt but the All the Money in the World noms have got to be a pretty good indication that the film is pretty strong.
Mark, I’m hoping it’s a thing where they don’t know what to make of The Last Jedi, much as initial audiences didn’t know what to make of Empire. The narrative that Empire is the masterpiece took a long time to grow out of Star War’s shadow.
I have a hard time believing it’s bad considering that we would have heard about reshoots and they probably wouldn’t have given Johnson his own trilogy to play with. Disney must be happy with it. But, like you, if this one isn’t good, I’m probably done.
Yeah, it just feels like this was the last best hope for this trilogy to contain at least one really good Star Wars movie (given that Abrams’ involvement in the next one does not bode well). If it doesn’t work, then I can’t see ep IX redeeming the trilogy. Which is a serious bummer.

I have no idea if it’s a dud. The supposed leaks have been god damn insane, and about as realistic as, “JIM GORDON HAS A BEER, AND CHEATS ON HIS WIFE” levels.
Mark, what reactions are you seeing? If you go back to the 2015 reactions. These 2017 ones, are a lot more excited for the property. If that translate into anything… here’s hoping. I’m just wanting Luke Skywalker to not die. If he dies, then this whole thing will be a wash.
There’s the usual fanboy raving, of course, which can’t really be trusted for something like this. But some more discerning viewers are calling it a mixed bag, too long, etc. Reviews pop tomorrow, which should give some more indications of overall quality. I’ve got my tickets for Saturday, so I’ll see for myself soon enough. Genuinely hoping to be delighted.
Hope these “more discerning reviewers” will amplify the vague reservations in their observant, stylish reviews.

Who knows what the fuck Disney is doing? Seriously? They have a network that only gets its product, from a division that will be a Disney arm. Cancelling any of the Sunday night shows, or the Orvelle, would lead to a lot of lost money, and some other network (Most likely Netflix/Amazon) swooping in, and looking like heroes. Disney, has to figure out what to do with Fox. They should sell it to fucking Charter, and work with them to keep it the way it is. Losing a fucking TV NETWORK in 2018, is god damn unacceptable.
Ray and Mark, if any of the spoilers are true. God help us, because it really screams, loudly and proudly, that Disney and LFL have no idea what the fuck they are doing. If this shit ends this way… it’s just going to leave a bad taste in people’s mouth, and I really cannot see the film getting anywhere close to 2bn. Watch people absolutely love it, and it makes like 2.2 or some shit, and I am just over here shrugging.
Again, that 2bn isn’t me, but it’s Disney. That’s what they feel these movies can do, and don’t respond to this as if it’s made up tripe. That’s where they see this film, and The Last Jedi, if those spoilers are true. Shouldn’t even make as much as Rogue One, because it’s just such garbage. Garbage, that Iger, Horn, and Kennedy loved, but garbage to everyone else who has to pay to see it.
If those spoilers aren’t true, and it’s actually a rollicking good time? It should beat TFA. I’m hoping for this outcome, but those spoilers really make me feel for Trevorrow… if true, because he was put in an absolutely terrible position in which to close this trilogy.
Let me add one more thing: if those spoilers are true, then LFL is run worse than fucking DC/Warners. They are atrocious and need a fucking change at the top.
JS, The TV network and the owned and operated stations are not on the table, just the content creation and the cable channels except for the big sports and news (there are regional sports networks on the block). Since they would no longer have a financial stake in fox studio television product I would think you would see less of it on the fox network. It would be possible that Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers moves to FX if Murdoch’s Fox Network doesn’t think it is worth the rate they pay. But Simpson’s is too valuable a commodity in syndication and foreign sales for Disney to let go (plus once their merchandising arm get ahold of it Kablooey).
And Comcast has dropped out of the running so I have to become resigned to the fact that this is happening. Sigh. Hopefully this means Alabama will break correctly since Karma can’t allow all kinds of bad things to happen at once right?

As for the buyout, the Fox Network is not and never has been on the table. There is no way it would pass anti-trust requirements if Disney had both ABC and Fox. Hell even the addition of the cable channels into Disney’s portfolio (they own half of A&E networks on top of their Disney branded channels) or the fact that they would now represent around 33% of the theatrical market share should raise eyebrows.
Hcat, what I mean is: FOX decided to only take on content from 21st Century Fox. Now, it’s losing that content, and that’s biggest problem here. We cannot as a country, lose a fucking network. A network particularly like Fox, that airs shows with some of the most engaged fanbases.
If this kills FOX NETWORK TV, then fuck this deal. Fuck it right in RJMA!
