Weekend Estimates by Finally Closed Shades Klady

Weekend Estimates 2018-02-11 at 9.18.42 AM

The final 50 Shades movie looks like the first that will fail to gross $100 million domestic. Still, $250 million worldwide seems likely, so Universal can still make a bundle and the Chinese can get their money out. Peter Rabbit delivers an Emoji Movie opening, sans Poop. And The 15:17 to Paris chugs out of the station slowly. Jumanji and Greatest Showman continue to hold, their 2018 numbers outgrossing any 2018 release to date.

The PETER RABBIT number, in relation to PADDINGTON 2, is depressingly good. Was Paddington not woke enough? P.Rab’s advertising campaign obviously left the pre-teens SHOOK. I have not seen the movie, as the idea of seeing Peter and co. getting lit in the garden doesn’t appeal to me, but sheesh.

The last milestone for JUMANJI 2 appears to be trying to catch GOTG2 for #4 domestic release of 2017. This week it became the first Sony release since 1999’s STUART LITTLE to spend 8 weeks in the Top 5, and next week it will surpass SPIDEY 2 domestically and SPIDEY 3 worldwide to become Sony’s all-time #2 in both categories.

GREATEST SHOWMAN is a hair’ breath from toppling WAR OF PLANET OF THE APES for Fox domestically.

  2. JSPartisan says:

I’m still going with Paddington being too British for the US. It’s just steeped in britishness, and not everyone is an anglophile. They should still watch those movies, both of them, because they are just effortlessly moving movies.

  3. cadavra says:

No, PADDINGTON 2 was too sweet and gentle for Americans. They want their British animal pictures to be more like HOME ALONE.

  4. JSPartisan says:

Cad, that will work as well.

  5. Hcat says:

The first Paddington made about double what this one did, thought it was well received, I liked it quite a bit and I am overloaded with kids films. I am honestly dumbfounded on why this did not do better, did Jumanji suck up all the oxygen?

And Fifty’s worldwide number was 136ish million, so budget and a good deal of marketing recouped in the first three days. Will obviously drop off quickly but between this and Insidious they have $300 million off of a 65 million investment with the rest of FSF worldwide run to go. Not a bad way to start a year.

  6. JSPartisan says:

The Fifty Shades movies, are a billion dollar franchises. That’s insane.

  7. Ray Pride says:

Would they have made more if they were better?

  8. spassky says:

I just wrote about 800 words randomly in this window about the lack of political exhibition in the films. But, you know, no one wants to read that.

I will offer three marketing taglines from each of the films.

    1) Mr. Grey will see you now
    2) [Blah blah, something something dark side]
    3) Mrs. Grey will see you now

If we look at the posters we see
    1) a man
    2) a man and a woman in a mask
    3) a woman groping a man (particularly bringing focus to the man’s chest area)

what’s the exit polling like? there’s a lot going on here. Obviously, started playing to a female fan base that was there for the kink (no judgement–it friggin worked; and also enticed a burgeoning cosmopolitan middle class in China hungry for narratives more focused on sex). I remember friends in China reading the book, but don’t remember if they dragged their partners along or made a girls night out thing. Would be a great oral history to just get all the marketing team on record to see what was going on.

Too bad there’s mostly just a bunch of dudes here/people who are not interested in these films/not being marketed to. Would be interested to hear the opinion of a fan.

EDIT: “just a bunch of dudes here” sounds a little negative and harsh, not my intention, but it’s probably true

  9. Bob Burns says:

Thanks for linking the Richard Lawson story about Adam Rippon. I misted up reading it, imagining how a little eight-year-old me might have reacted to his exquisite performance in Sunday’s team event.
