The Weekend Report

Hubble, Bubble, Dribble, Trouble

Jurrasic World: Fallen Kingdom led the Canada Day frame with an estimated $59.9 million. The session featured two new national releases on the pre-Indie Day altar. Sicario: Day of the Soldado slotted third with $18.5 million with the basketball comedy Uncle Drew right behind at $15.3 million.

In the niches the Hindi Sanju was off to a potent start of $2.5 million. Based on the life of the sometimes notorious life of Bollywood acting heavy Sanjay Dutt the film also broke box office records on home turf with a $15 million opening weekend. In Quebec La Chute de l’Empire American marked the conclusion of Denys Arcand’s trilogy with a solid $382,000 gross at 70 venues.

Exclusive newcomers included excellent starts for the intense father-daughter saga Leave No Trace of $209,000 from nine screens. Also the doc Three Identical Strangers bowed to an upbeat $161,000 at five locales.

Revenues for the frame generated roughly $175 million and slid back 38% from last weekend. It was a slight 2% rise from 2017 when debuts of Despicable Me 3 and Baby Driver led with respective starts of $72.4 million and $20.6 million.

Tracking suggested it would be a tight race between the Sicario sequel and the buffoonish Uncle Drew with the latter film given a slight edge. However, the dark drama of DEA agents on the Southern border launched a full court press leading up to its Friday launch that turned the tables. Some pundits had it opening as high as $20 million. Its opening audience was 59% male with 70% age 25-years and older.

Sicario 2 opened day-and-date in 42 international markets to an estimated $6.2 million. Top territories included Korea with $1.2 million and Australia and the UK each contributing close to $1 million.

Though it was certainly evincing a Rockeyesque streak _ albeit with more intentional laughs _ Uncle Drew appeared to be on its way to a $17 million or $18 million opening. Critics found it laughable but that didn’t matter to its core audience. It’s audience, apart from a more significant African American component, was not dissimilar to Sicario with 56% male viewers that were 58% aged 25-years and older.

Domestic box office passed the $6 billion benchmark on Wednesday and is currently pacing about 3.5% ahead of 2017.
