I just have a little question, why isn’t anyone talking about “THE GHOST WRITER” as a best picture option. I understand that it is a mystery and they tend to be dismissed, but it is visually a beautiful movie, has a serious plot and was very entertaining. I think it should at least get a mention, if not make the list of ten. Rabbit Hole was awful, and the Kids are alright is just a stupid “dramady”. The Ghost Writer should get a push, you guys could help.
My Predicts:
Best Picture:
1. True Grit
2. The King’s Speech
3. The Social Network
4. Inception
5. Black Swan
6. the Fighter
7. Winter’s Bone
8. The Ghost Writer
9. Toy Story 3
10. Get Low
@Joe
You realize that these are not their picks for ten best films of the year they’re their predictions for what the academy will choose. As for the Ghost Writer quality aside(I personally didn’t like it) it was a box office bomb that came out in February.
I undedrstand these are not their picks, but are their predictions of what the academy will choose. But what i was saying with those last few words was that the media can help push a movie into contention, and “they” are the media so “You could help” is in reference to that. And i know The Ghost Writer wasn’t great but when some of these worse movies are getting attention, i’d like to see The Ghost Writer at least get a nod or a condecending smile.
It’s funny though how you can predict the list pretty easily every year. THere seems to be “Slots” and you just narrow down the best of Those films within the slots and you get your list.
Exanples:
THE PIXAR SLOT – see: Toy story 3, Up, etc. . .
THE BIG BUDGET SLOT – Inception, Avatar, The Aviator, Lord of the Rings, etc. . .
THE QUIRKY SLOT – Sideways, Juno, Little Miss Sunshine, The Kids are alright? etc. .
THE BIOGRAPHY SLOT – The King’s Speech, The Queen, A Beautiful Mind, Ray, Walk the Line, etc. . .
THE INDIE SLOT – The Hurt Locker, Crash, Sideways, Babel, Winter’s Bone? etc. . .
THE UNDERDOG THEME SLOT – The Fighter? Rocky, Precious, Milk, etc. . .
THE OSCAR FAVE DIRECTOR SLOT (Usually an undeserved pic from a director that Oscars love any time they make a serious movie)- 127 hours?, A Simple man, Letters from Iwo Jima, Crash, etc. . .
THE TRYING TOO HARD TO WIN AN OSCAR SLOT – The Curious case of Benjamin Button, Atonement, Brokeback Mountain, etc. . .
And on and on.
As you can see though there are more “slots” than movies allowed usually, and some movies can fit into multiple “slots”, But what i figure they do is fill out a sheet with the categories on it, listing their idea of the best movie at each, then narrow it down to best out of those and there is your list. It’s why you never get two similar styled movies on the same list.
And looking back on past oscars, how did “There will be Blood” not win in ’07, “Brokeback Mountain” or “Munich” in ’05, “Gosford Park” in ’01, and biggest of all, “Saving Private Ryan” in ’98. I know the bookends in Saving Private Ryan drag the movie down a bit with the old Matt Damon character, but still, that movie is sooooooo much better than “Shakespear in Love”. Every movie in that category that year (Except life is beautiful) was better.
And now i’m done rambling.
