Gaspar Noé’s “Climax” is a rude, refined, gyroscopic, hurtling mash-up, as the Argentine-French filmmaker has put it, of heaven and hell, smack in “the heart of winter 1996” in a remote schoolhouse where a mass of young dancers celebrate before an American tour. But someone spikes the sangria and celebration spirals into suffering. “Heaven” includes a bravura dance number with a ravishing range of bodies in orchestrations of sensual motion and the camera brandishing its lavish mobility for moments on end; “Hell” is palpitating paranoia, mental and physical, of the sort Noé has trafficked before (as in 2009’s “Enter the Void”) [Read more.]

Friday, January 18th, 2019Len Klady, a long-long-time veteran reporter and critic on the Hollywood beat, has passed away. He was with us at Movie City News for 18 years. Variety for a long while before that. And elsewhere. He was a rough-edged guy, but his well of passion for film and filmmakers was deep.

Vice Scopes Colombian Film Stalking
Monday, January 7th, 2019“’They’re very strict. They have this thing called ratio, where you have to maintain [your uploads and downloads] in an average proportion of three-to-one. If you download a film, you have to share three others. If you download eight films, you have to share 24. If you don’t maintain that ratio, you’re out. If you don’t have an invitation, you have nothing. It’s really hard to get access to K——–.’ K——–‘s strictness extends to its content: it’s expressly forbidden to upload any Hollywood films or blockbusters to the site.”

Sunday, January 6th, 2019The Golden Globes feels like those $15-per-ticket Ticketmaster service fees, everyone knows that it’s a kind of illegitimate con but for some reason an entire industry has agreed to let it happen because it works

When @goldenglobes host #SandraOh took a moment, looked out at a diverse audiences and said she could “feel the change,” I’ll admit that I wept.

Kevin Hart
Friday, January 4th, 2019The Kevin Hart story reminds me that being LGBT and insisting on decent treatment means constantly being told you're shrill, you're a hater, you're a mob, get a sense of humor, lighten up, get over it, move on, don't be so strident. It all means the same thing: Watch yourself.

I expected Ellen to actually ask Kevin Hart some sort of challenging question. Anything, really. But instead, it was just one long monologue from Kevin interspersed with Ellen’s approval. That interview made me miss the previous talk show hosts that asked tough questions.

In light of Ellen absolving Kevin Hart for his history of homophobic remarks, this seems like a good time to reiterate that no one member of a marginalized identity can forgive a bigot on behalf of the entire group.
