Cars 2 animated the box office as it fast tracked to an estimated $68.5 million and left the pack in a cloud of dust. The session’s other wide national Bad Teacher was in the bridesmaid position with $30.8 million.

The emerald avenging Green Lantern debuted on top of weekend ticket sales with an estimated $52.4 million (including Thursday midnight shows). The session’s other wide national debut was the family targeted Mr. Popper’s Penguins that charted in position three with $18.2 million. The coming of age yarn The Art of Getting By opted for a medium wide launch that grossed $730,000 from 610 venues.

Super 8 wins the weekend easily, though our estimate is about a million dollars lower than others. Judy Moody isn’t such a bummer for Relativity, as they were distributing on a for hire basis, not covering production or P&A.

The opening of X-Men: First Class provided the franchise with a strong re-boot and the new chapter easily led weekend ticket sales with an estimated $56.1 million.
All those folk that fell in love with the movies in the 1970s and 1980s have found the likes of Midnight in Paris and The Tree of Life and have provided Beginners with a good start. These shifts in movie going trends are receiving close scrutiny in the industry and one can expect release patterns to see at least nominal change from rather entrenched patterns dating back to 1989 including a few high profile debuts in March and October.
