Gurus o’ Gold: Post New York Film Festival
This week, in our last pre-November rankings, The Gurus are looking at the Best Picture race, split into films that have been widely seen by the industry (in theatrical release, wide screenings or at festivals) and those that have not. (Please note that The Book Thief was at Mill Valley last week and is starting screening as this post is being published.)

As I see it.
As of now, THREE GIVENS:
1. GRAVITY
2. 12 YEARS A SLAVE
3. CAPTAIN PHILLIPS
THREE ‘LIKELIES’
1. AMERICAN HUSTLE
2. SAVING MR. BANKS
3. WOLF OF WALL STREET
After that, leading contenders for remaining 4 SLOTS (in no particular order):
NEBRASKA
INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS
THE MONUMENTS MEN
THE BUTLER
ALL IS LOST
HER
AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY
BLUE JASMINE
PHILOMENA
Sad that Prisoners is still considered a better bet than Before Midnight.
And why oh why is Lee Daniels’ The Butler still ranked so high on the BP predictions? Surely people aren’t that desperate to appear politically correct?
P.S. It’d be awesome if Upstream Color received a surprise nomination for Score, Editing, or Cinematography, but it’ll never happen.
You guys are very very smart to have American Hustle as your number one unseen.
Very surprised Out of the Furnace is nowhere on the unseen list. It’s got, what, six previous nominees, and the director of Jeff Bridges’ winning performance? (Unless this is yet another one postponed to 2014.)
