The Weekend Report

The confluence of a Friday the 13th debut and the upcoming All Hallows Eve celebrations propelled Happy Death Day to the top of weekend viewing with an estimated $26.5 million. The session’s other wide release, actioner The Foreigner, slotted third with $12.8 million.

The early career of future Supreme Thurgood Marshall garnered an OK $3 million while the man behind the comic-book Amazon, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, lassoed only $730,000. Best of the Indian imports was Telugu Raju Gari Gadhi 2 with a $216,000 tally.

Strongest among exclusive newcomers was biopic Tom of Finland with $11,300 from a solo flight. A.A. Milne-inspired Goodbye Christopher Robin opened with a soft $55,300 from nine engagements.

Revenues for the frame hovered around $100 million and took a 5% dip from last weekend. It was a slim 3% improvement from 2016 when the launch of The Accountant led with $24.7 million and Girl on the Train took second with $12.2 million.

The reign of Blumhouse continues with Happy Death Day, a seasonally-appropriate horror. Industry tracking suggested a top-end opening of $20 million that it readily surpassed. Studio exit polls identified the crowd as 54% female with a surprisingly youthful crowd that was 63% 25 and younger.

The duo of Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan propelled The Foreigner to more than $70 million from seven overseas markets in the past two weeks. Pre low-balled the effort with max figures of $10 million. Studio exit polling wasn’t available at deadline.

As for the other major openers, Marshall performed at the top end of expectations while Professor Marston flunked out of an anticipated $2 million plus debut.
