The Weekend Report
Cars 3 sped to the top of weekend moviegoing with an estimated $53.3 million. It was also good news for the Tupac bio All Eyez on Me that ranked third with $26.4 million. The other two national newcomers were less vibrant. Shark threat nail-biter 47 Meters Down had an OK start of $10.9 million but the female rave Rough Night pancaked with an $8 million debut.
In limited wide release, The Book of Henry was weak at $1.4 million. In international bday-and-dates, Indian imports were light, including Super Singh with $148,000. The Canadian hit Maudie on folk artist Maude Lewis launched in the U.S. with a solid $50,000 from four canvases. The exclusive freshman class saw an impressive start for Brit history lesson The Journey of $32,500 from two engagements.
Revenues for the session approached $190 million and expanded 31% from last weekend. It was still a 20% erosion from 2016 when debuts of Finding Dory and Central Intelligence led with respective openings of $135.1 million and $35.5 million
There was more mileage than most anticipated for Cars 3, one of Pixar’s less nuanced efforts. Tracking suggested a marginally higher gross of $55 million or so. The film skewed ever so slightly male at 51% with 58% of the crowd aged 25 and younger. Families accounted for 75% of viewers and that clearly identified both the film’s strength as well was its weakness. Cars 3 was also out of the gate in 23 overseas markets with an estimated $21 million rally. Top territories included a $6 million launch in Mexico and Russia grossing just shy of $5 million.
The fictionalized bio of the murdered rap genius Tupac Shakur All Eyez on Me had high end expectations of about $20 million. Audiences may have thought it was a documentary, hurting its commercial impact. But they were wrong. Its opening audience was 53% male with 62% aged 25 and older.
Both 47 Meters Down and Rough Night eyed debuts in the low teens and while the former came close, the latter was significantly off the mark. Rough Night drew a 61% female audience with 60% aged 25 and older.
The Book of Henry, which opened the Los Angeles Film Festival Wednesday, also tilted female at 64% with 74% of viewers aged 25 and older.
