The Weekend Report
The domestic debut of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom debuted at the top of the charts with an estimated $149.8 million. It was the only new national release because the industry is well aware that you don’t mess with dinos whether they happen to be called Rex or Raptor. It ranks as its studio’s second biggest bow ever behind, unsurprisingly, Jurassic World.
Overall new openings: light. Indian imports include the Tamil Tik Tik Tik with $51,400 at 33 venues and the Punjabi Asees grossing $36,300 from 15 locations. Modest results were also reflected in the bows of the Filipino My 2 Mommies with a $60,800 tally and Korea’s The Accidental Detective 2 with a $44,900 box office. The doc The Catcher Was a Spy opened to $118,000 from 49 short stops.
Session revenues topped $280 million and had a slight 4% increase from last weekend. However it was a significant 101% improvement from 2017 when the launch of Transformers: The Last Knight led with $44.7 million and Wonder Woman napped second spot ith $24.9 million.
Anticipation was flush for the Jurassic World sequel especially in light of an international release that had rung up $455 million in the two weeks leading up to its domestic premiere. Reviews tended to be lukewarm with critics take the line that it wasn’t quite up to the standards of the prior World or its Park antecedents. Nonetheless pundits projected an opening bounty in the range of $130 million to $140 million.
The domestic audience was identified as 54% male with 56% aged 25-years and younger. It played well across all quadrants but surprised in respect to having a younger audience than has become the norm for this and other comparable franchise behemoths.
Internationally it took the hat trick on top of the charts with a $100 million plus session that included potent new openings in Mexico of $12.3 million. Also strong among preems were Brazil with a $9.2 million box office and Australia grossing $8 million.
A step behind overseas was Incredibles 2 that debuted in China to $21 million and added $57 million to its international.
