Of course Now You See Me made a killing: It offered Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. If they’d figured out a way to get Christian Bale into the mix, it would have been No. 1 for the weekend.
NYSM is a surprise….should have been a non-summer movie to maximize things…
Damn, I’m the biggest Hangover/Todd Phillips fan, and liked H3 well enough, but man, you just KNOW WB and TP thought they’d be pushing 150 mil by second week, not NUMBER 6 on their second Sunday.
How is EPIC making all that money? Who even knows what that IS?
NYSM should have good legs… It’s a really fun movie, but most of all, audiences always love that ‘figure it out’ twist-heavy thing.
Epic is the only family game out there Lex.
The thing about H3 that kinda rubbed me the wrong way Lex was that the guys who were for the most part normal guys, seemed to be a bit unphased by murder right in front of their faces.
It is a bizarre movie, as others have said– basically a medium-paced dramedy about 3 stone-sober guys acting mildly inconvenienced about committing a pair of vaguely taxing break-ins. But, yeah, at at LEAST one point, guys are getting blown away with bullets to the head, and they just kinda shrug it off.
I’ve heard people say it’s so MEAN-SPIRITED and SO DARK and such an audience fuck-you, but mostly it struck me as like a 1988 type sequel, sort of relaxingly bland and lazy, SUPER genteel… HANGOVER II was darker, and more effective as a Mann-Scott-Berg-looking action picture… H3 is sort of an in-between no man’s land. I still liked it because I love the characters and Phillips’ look. Just doesn’t really commit to the alleged “darkness,” down to what you point about them being flippant about the carnage around them.
I dont think H3 was dark enough. They abandoned comedy for violence. They tried to raise the stakes to a stupid level. It was more fun when the problems were finding Doug and getting him to the altar on time. They went wackadoo with the violence and the the stakes, but the Hangover films were always kind of funny because at the end of the day these guys were fucking their lives up, but it wasn’t exactly life and death. Getting a drunken face tattoo the day of your wedding. There’s a tiger in the bathroom. Who’s baby is this?
The whole ‘working for a murderous gangster’ bit took it too far in the wrong direction.
Funny thing also about H1 & H2. Everything made sense in a weird way. H1 was a mystery to be unravelled and was a brilliant piece of storytelling and filmmaking. H2 was just more of the same with some acid thrown in. I liked it better than most did.
SPOILER ALERT FOR PART 3
There are small things that when you see it happen you just go, no fucking way that would happen and that moment in H3 came for me when the boys told John Goodman’s character that they did not have Chow, but they now exactly where he is, and John Goodman goes “no fucking way. The deal is to bring him to me.” And I am thinking, this is the guy who just stole $21m dollars from you…twice. Broke into you house and killed your dogs. You’ve been looking for him for a very long time, he’s been a $42m pain in your ass, and now you know where he is and you say you’re not going to get him because you made a deal with three amateurs to bring him to you. That made no sense.

Glad to see Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani do so well. I caught it the other night and it’s a really wonderful film. I’m not sure what it would take for Indian cinema to really catch on here but I hope people will open up and give the films a chance.
I’m surprised at the amount of love for NYSM in the previous thread. I found the movie boring and a waste of the concept and cast. We don’t even get to spend much time with the magicians during the bulk of the movie. And the Magic-fu fight between Ruffalo and Franco was stupid. I found Ruffulo pretty terrible in addition. He wasn’t helped by the writing for sure.
Really wanted to like this one.
Looks like H3 will still be profitable…it’s doing very well overseas.
Despite my complaints, glad to see STAR TREK is getting bailed out overseas. Looks to double its predecessor and then some–$500 million worldwide is within reach.
$700 million worldwide looks likely for F&F, which would make it Universal’s biggest film that hasn’t had a major re-release (3rd biggest overall behind JP and E.T.).
the pitiful thing about Now You See Me was that the actual magic tricks were not based in the reality of the movie (the bubble was probably the deal breaker) … even Burt Wonderstone presented magic tricks that exist in the now
I skimmed the reviews on After Earth and didn’t see anyone reviewing the actual movie; they mostly seemed to be about castigating Will Smith for the sins of nepotism, or M Night for the sins of having his career crash and burn.
Is this actually a movie, or is it just a figment of the popular imagination, created for critics to not critique the film whilst demonstrating their pharisee-esque ability to stone the sinners?
If M. Night’s career is crashing and burning it’s because he’s been making crappy movies. It’s not like he’s an actress who just turned 40 and is therefore leprous.
It was Teri Garr who said she hid her MS because she thought it would destroy her career, but instead it was turning 40 that did the trick.

Every time I see the poster for Frances Ha, I think of how awkward it must make Lex feel.
I think one of the issues I have with M Night, and I like him as a Director, is that he always goes to the flashback, something small happening in the past that is a precursor for some big moment in the final scene trick.
Why Soderbergh, Nolan, Fincher, Wes Anderson and others have been able to do is be proficient in several genres adopting different styles of storytelling and yet still bringing their unique perspective.
I guess M Night tried with Airbender to be a director for hire, but maybe he needs to direct a few linear by the numbers thrillers and dramas, and maybe then he wont be so reliant on this technique. I guess it’s his blue flares.
So, I went to H3 yesterday. Five people in a theater that holds about 300. I thought it was pathetically bad. I read all the bad reviews and thought, “well, they all hated H2 also, and I thought it was funny…..not as good as the first…but better than all the negative reviews said it was.” Well, this was pretty awful. I am sad that they ended on such an awful note.
All three principals really seemed to go through the motions. It almost like Cooper was just thinking,”thank god this is coming out after the Playbook Oscar campaign.”
I saw this over Furious 6 or Now You See Me, basically because I knew that it is going to be out of theaters in a couple weeks…….as it should.
