Great 6 months for universal starting with 50 shades.
Great for F gary Gray, and Ice cube. Hope they reunite for one last friday along with chris tucker and mike epps.
Also great for will packer who in the last 8 yrs starting with stomp the yard has become a power player for mid to low level budgeted african american cinema.
does this change the game? i mean, i can see a bunch of rap biopics being greenlit after this. 2pac for sure. Hell, Deathrow records could have its own movie, Wu Tang Clan, Public Enemy, Nas Vs Jay Z Battle For NY Supremacy coming soon…. a Russell Simmons biopic etc…..
Didnt see this coming at all. I thought Universal was being pretty accurate with their initial $25 million prediction for an openning…

I could see it matching the domestic cume of “50 Shades.”
‘Straight Outta Compton’ is a local success, don’t think Hip Hop movies travel well overseas, although Hip Hop is a global phenomenom…
With all the talk about Universal’s great year at the box office, isn’t it time somebody comments on the fact that the best movie (maybe the only really good movie) they released so far in 2015, “Blackhat,” was one of their rare misfires?

Not a single one of Universal’s 2015 blockbusters had a smidgeon of the artistry or smarts of “Blackhat.”
I liked BLACKHAT a lot but it’s also a bad movie. I can enjoy it in terms of formalism but it doesn’t work.
You can’t deny that “Blackhat” is at least more interesting (and certainly more ambitious) than processed meat products like “F7,” “Minions,” “PP2,” “Jurassic World,” etc., etc.
Blackhat isn’t even a noble failure. It’s just a bad movie with a world class dumb script. Not to mention Hemsworth is horrifically miscast. The dude does not read “smart”. Mann’s worst, easily.
So, yeah, Minions was worse. Yay!
And the rest of Universal’s hit parade as well, Ambling.

I guess it doesn’t qualify as a blockbuster but Trainwreck was certainly profitable and something to be proud of.

I think a lot of Universal’s films this year tried too hard for the profound (or in Trainwreck’s case for me tried to become a drama) when fully embracing their inner stupidity would have been better….Blackhat, JW, Fifty Shades. (Is picking Cop Car as my fave cheating? Technically Fifty Shades is Focus).
Still, I’ve been happy with the generally healthy mix in Universal’s slate. Not too much genre, too much drama, too much appealing to one gender or ethnic demo…yes there have been sequels but only one among their dozen remaining releases. Many of which I’m looking forward to btw. If a studio is going to break BO records by a country mile I’d rather this diverse approach than Disneys top heavy or WB’s pack ’em to the gills strategies.

I was not a part of that earlier discussion but I have recently seen the movie and I thought it was excellent. Mann is hit or miss with me, I have not liked a lot of his recent work. Watching Blackhat was a great experience.
Blackhat is great. Definitely had some script and casting issues, but it’s pure, gorgeous Mann style and that’s what matters to me. Like Terrence Malick, Mann is a filmmaker who is proving more and more divisive with each film, as he pushes his style further and further toward the margins of mainstream filmmmaking. I can’t really fault people who aren’t on his wavelength anymore, but it still works for me.

Since it’s not a sequel, reboot or based on fan fiction-spawned erotica, I guess I’d somehow forgotten it was a Universal movie.
Although the Judd Apatow name should have been a (very) big reminder since all of his directing credits are courtesy of Universal, lol.

I’m with Etguild, Uni seems bad on the surface, but compared to other studios they are a bright spot right now. Better that they “win” than Dismal.
@movieman I assume you’re not including Focus, but I’m surprised you’re tearing into Universal so vociferously when their on-brand division has by far the most impressive lineup the rest of the way…Everest, Legend, Jobs, Crimson Peak, By The Sea, Krampus and Sisters (and I think Visit and Jem could be good too).
I guess one has an argument that Disney may have a better year quality wise. Fair enough. When you only have 11 releases on the calendar, and outsource the majority of them to Pixar, Marvel, LucasFilm (the cartoon not SW) and Dreamworks, the sky is the limit. Otherwise, it’s hard to see how Sony, Paramount and Fox don’t deserve more grief (WB…you could go either way, but quality to me has sucked).
As a movie-fan, you can always lament studio-fare quality most of the year…but I applaud the fact Universal is reaching out to new corners with practically every release, and is being rewarded handsomely for it. Far better than the “splatter to see what sticks” or “lets throw everything into half a dozen tentpoles” tactics of WB/Sony and Disney/Paramount in recent years.

His wavelength hasn’t changed, Blackhat just sucked. Miami Vice was great. His 3 films prior to Blackhat:

Nux was right. Compton is leggy. It has a real shot at $200m.
I agree that Univ has some (potential) bright spots on the horizon (I’m particularly psyched about “Crimson Peak” and “Jobs”), Et.
But am I the only one who thought “F7,” “JW1” and “PP2” (their biggest domestic hits so far this year) are the quintessence of assembly-line/formula mediocrity/swill? They’re practically Marvel-worthy in terms of their trashy disposability.
And that “Sisters” trailer scared the bejesus out of me.
I was genuinely looking forward to a reteaming of Fey and Poehler, hoping for something better/smarter/funnier than their (mediocre at best) ” Baby Mama.”
Not to sound like a prude (really I’m not: I adored “Trainwreck”!), but merely upping the sleaze factor won’t automatically translate into more laughs. It looks mean-spirited, uncharacteristically (for Fey and Poehler) raunchy-crude (and not raunchy-crude in a good, vintage Farrelly Bros. way) and conspicuously unfunny.
As much as I love Tom Hardy, I’m tempering my enthusiasm re: “Legends.” After all, Brian (“The Order,” “A Knight’s Tale”) Helgeland’s track record as director is pretty frigging dismal.
As someone who gritted his teeth through the original PP, I can’t say I was expecting much. Re: F7…there’s certainly been worse entries, and the grace with which they handled Walker’s death counted for a lot with me. No complaints.
Absolutely agree on JW, despite the inherent lunacy in continuing this series based on the original premise (next up is apparently Special Forces squadrons of Raptors and human-raptor hybrids). MINIONS was the real let-down, of course, but there has never been much magic behind the curtain at Illumination for me to begin with.
That said, again, is the quality worse than the other studios aside from Disney? Nah.
