Weekend Estimates by Finding Dory 2 Klady
Dory becomes the 6th best 2nd weekend ever, still just a smidgen behind Captain: Civil for the top 10-day gross of 2016. Independence Day will look for aliens… well, international… to save its day. And The Shallows waits to see if word-of-mouth kicks in and makes it a hit or a meh-ss. Swiss Army Man farts $37k per screen out of the indie market on three screens.
Hey… just wrote an elaborate piece and had most of it murdered by the quirks of the publishing platform…
Will rebuilt it and run it tonight. Sorry.
6th best 8th weekend? Typo?
Isn’t this Dory’s second weekend? I think it’s the 8th best second weekend ever. Maybe I’m missing something…
The weirdest quirk this year continues to be the yawning gap between the top and bottom. XMEN APOCALYPSE just became the very first 2016 film to settle between $150-325 million.
Also fairly amazed 2016 is clinging to a domestic lead over last year. It has a couple more weeks I think, before it cedes it to last summer’s late onslaught of MINIONS, ANT MAN, TRAINWRECK, MI5, and COMPTON. (I’ve seen some analysts suggest next weekend could romp but it’s a mixed bag the last two times this happened).
Looks as though “CI” will go down as Kevin Hart’s top-grossing (co)starring vehicle. Of course, Dwayne “Mr. Rock” Johnson had something to do w/ it, too.
Nicely done, gentlemen. Now if you’d just pick a better caliber of script.
And Hart has “Secret Life of Pets” coming up in 2 weeks which should have little trouble minting serious cash.
He’s not the “lead,” but it’ll definitely go down as another major win for his resume.
Whoops!
I just remembered that “Ride Along” did $134-million U.S.
“CI” is unlikely to match that, although it should have no trouble being Hart’s #2 starring grosser.
Never mind, lol.
I haven’t seen CI but Rawson Marshall Thurber will always have a place in my heart for Dodgeball, one of my favorite comedies of the last 15 years. I just watched it again yesterday morning and it still delivers, joke after joke after joke. I love the hell out of that movie.
Really enjoyed CI more than I thought I would mainly due to Dwayne Johnson’s performance. He’s come a long way since The Scorpion King.
Loved Dodgeball. CI was okay, but Thurber does not know how to stage action scenes. Really liked the pairing of Johnson & Hart though.
Thurber is one of the strangest directors when it comes to popular and critical opinion on his movies. Critics were unfairly hard on WE’RE THE MILLERS, and there’s a lot of weird hatred for DODGEBALL among regular folks. I think CI is his best since DODGEBALL. I highly doubt it’ll heel it out for weeks like MILLERS did and become a cash cow though, which is odd.
It was probably long in production beforehand, but after seeing the trailer today for Morgan, I can’t help but think someone saw The Witch and wanted to make use of Anya Taylor-Joy’s amazing face.

And yes, Dodgeball is a delight. Rip Torn is great.
I’m kinda impressed MCN Tweets follows AC Newman. Musical genius and funny guy. Is Dave a New Pornographers fan, maybe?
I was really looking forward to being contrarian and loving The Neon Demon, but yikes it is ridiculously stupid and just as bad as most have claimed. The screenplay is just atrocious, with paper thin characters spouting on-the-nose nonsense. It’s painfully slow and dull, which I didn’t expect it to be. Figured even if it’s bad it won’t be boring. I was wrong. I was tempted to walk out but stuck around, and I wish I would have bailed. I wish I’d never paid to see it in the first place.
EtGuild2: I must be a regular person, because I didn’t care for Dodgeball at all.
Just looking at the box office predictions for BFG. Most are below $30m. Am I the only thinking this is very low or is it just wishful thinking that this film becomes a giant hit? I know Dory is eating up the family audience right now so maybe Disney is really cannibalizing itself, but I just can’t see how parents won’t take their kids to this.
Yeah it’s pretty baffling. It’s such an enjoyable film. And it’s Roald Dahl+ Spielberg! Audiences deserve garbage I guess if this thing is really headed to $20 million this weekend. On DORY, yeah, maybe they should have moved BFG to late July because of it. Continuing to demolish everything in its path…will be close to overtaking ULTRON’s pace by Monday. Comparison wise, it’s a tough one, but TDK’s run indicates it’ll finish just above $500 million. The staggered futbol release pattern, and underperformance in China (next to Zootopia at least) makes it hard to determine whether much over $1 billion worldwide is going to happen or not.
TARZAN…soooo slooooow. I didn’t think it was bad per se, but it just drags. Was rooting so hard for this 🙁
I was pleasantly surprised by “Tarzan,” Et.
Thought it was great fun (and pretty smart, too). Who knew?
I’d suggest seeing it on the biggest screen possible, too. IMAX sounds about right.
How come BFG wasn’t a holiday release? Seems more fitting.
