Not a surprising drop for Logan, considering the R-rating, the fan-base, and the competition from Kong (the Kongpetition?). Still, Fox has to be thrilled.
Is David busy this weekend or is he still too upset over how much he hated Kong?

Is it weird to advertise BELKO EXPERIMENT as “From the Producer (or Studio) That Brought you Split and Get Out” when they’re still in theatres? Definitely a unique phenomenon.
Even though the movie (and genre) is crap, hats off to Lionsgate for a successful first foray into faith-based filmmaking.
It does not seem that the Best Picture win has given “Moonlight” legs…and “Get Out” continues to hold like an Oscar-winner, NOT a genre film…interesting numbers all over this chart
The fact that “Moonlight” was available on Blu-Ray, DVD, On Demand, etc. two days after its (surprise) Oscar win probably doomed any meaningful future theatrical revenue, John.
I bet A24 would have delayed the video release by at least a month if they’d dared to dream of actually winning BP.
Moonlight left money on the table no doubt with it’s DVD release, but it did have it’s best weekend ever last weekend. And it has earned $4.5m over the past 14 days. That’s its best run thus far. And when it has outgrossed stuff like The Hurt Locker, with bigger stars and more action, not sure what should be expected of a release like this in terms of box office potential.
There is something to be said however for it being the second lowest grossing BP winner since 1978, or at least that is as far back as Mojo goes.
Well, it’s also going to end up ahead of DALLAS BUYERS CLUB as the biggest gay subject matter film of the decade (Imitation Game certainly doesn’t count).
To find a lower grossing best picture winner prior to The Hurt Locker you have to go back to at least 1960 and The Apartment, which had a box office rental of $6.7 million (although some websites convert this to a gross of over $18 million so it might not be lower).
Gigi from 1958 had a rental of $7.3 million, which, if it had a similar rental share of the gross as The Apartment is purported to have, may still have outgrossed The Hurt Locker.
The next one that is definitely lower is 1955’s Marty which had rentals of $2 million in its year of release.
There was once a time when Dave wrote a blog instead of just posting box office estimates and interview videos. I like those things but the main reason I’ve come to this website for almost 20 years is because of Dave and lately we seem to be getting a lot of good stuff but not very much Dave.

DP just realized that the future was Youtube, not blogging. I miss his entries too, but I’m actually surprised and grateful that it’s still going on at all.
Dave is pissed about all this talk of rebooting The Matrix, and is sulking.
Frankly, I can’t blame him.
I’d love to see a “Matrix” continuation where post-robot Zion has decayed into shit because of human ineptitude and a resistance group bands together to rebuild and go back into The Matrix so that they can live a Utopic life.
Buuuuuuuuut, knowing Warner Brothers, it’ll probably just be 100 minutes of a young version of Keanu Reeves dodging bullets in slow-motion to the song “Blitzkrieg Bop.”
But is there a better song than Blitzkrieg Bop? No, there isn’t. Joey Ramone is my idol. I’m getting a tattoo of him in June.
Rebooting The Matrix is a dumb as dirt idea.
