Weekend Estimates by the by…

Weekend Estimates 2017-08-20 at 9.55.27 AM

Do I really have to say anything here? I feel like I already covered things in this meh weekend.

It stuns me that there have been 27 $400 million domestic grossers (Wonder Woman joined last week).

The Big Sick will pass $40 million and is a serious candidate for a Best Picture nomination.

The Trip to Spain did a great $27k per on 36.

Strong expansion for Ingrid Goes West.

Detroit will gross almost exactly what The Hurt Locker did domestically.

Gook opened well. Good Time expanded pretty well. Wind River is underdelivering. Patti Cake$ is a work in progress, but word of mouth is going to have to kick in fast.

I’m going to go watch my print of The Day The Clown Cried….

Shame about “Logan Lucky,” but perhaps it’ll be like “Bubble” and set the stage for more successful experiments.

  2. Stella's Boy says:

I loved Wind River. Found it gripping from start to finish with no letup whatsoever. Great sense of place. Solid mystery. Excellent acting. Beautiful score and cinematography. Several genuinely moving moments (Renner gets some great dialogue re: grief and loss). And that 15 or so minutes at the oil company trailers. Damn. One of the best sequences I’ve seen this year. Exceptionally well-staged and executed. Lovely ending too. It also flies by. 110 minutes felt like much, much less. I really, really loved it.

The WOLF WARRIOR 2 run continues…$768 million now in China. These numbers can’t be real, can they????

$1 billion now looks inevitable for DM3. And HOMECOMING might knock off GOTG2 worldwide…it’ll manage the feat if it performs similarly in China to its grosses across the rest of the international marketplace (ASM2 did $95 million there).

Glad to see APES turn a profit after all, even if I’m not a huge fan of the revival series.

Re: the TV ads, is Roadside serious about “Only Living Boy” opening “everywhere” August 25th?
There’s nothing about its performance so far to indicate that level of confidence.
On the other hand, Weinstein would be silly not to take “Wind River” into 1,000+ theaters at this point. Seems like a safer investment than, ugh, “Leap.”

You have a print of “The Day The Clown Cried”? Very jealous, Dave!

  5. Ray Pride says:

Two versions of the screenplay for The Day The Clown Cried are in ready circulation. There’s a 2015/16 BBC half-hour doc embedded on front page (clickthrough to YouTube). Plus: Godard explains Jerry Lewis to Dick Cavett in 1980.

  6. Triple Option says:

Saw Logan Lucky, found it flat, much slower than expected. Heard other people after the film questioning things that happened and many wondered if there hadn’t been a number of things cut. Now, as I think about it, I think there was a great cast of characters but only in description and appearance. Their skills, idiosyncrasies, personal codes or limitations didn’t figure nearly enough in the story. Much like what disappointed me about Suicide Squad.

I like that AMC will be offering $5 movies on Tuesdays. You can’t purchase tix online, which is fair enough. Just trying to decide if I want to be disappointed by The Dark Tower or Atomic Blonde next??

  7. Movieman says:

Totally disagree w/ you about “Logan” which I loved, T.O.
But more than happy to offer my $5 AMC Tuesday recommendation of “Atomic Blonde.”
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

P.S.= “The Dark Tower”? Shudder. The absolute worst Stephen King movie EVER.

  8. Bulldog68 says:

Worse than Dreamcatcher Movieman? And I gotta say Firestarter and Maximum Overdrive are guilty pleasures of mine.

  9. Hwjmk says:

Where I live, Marcus has been offering $5 Tuesdays for years with tickets able to be purchased via the App/online. I wonder how many have subscribed to MoviePass since the price drop that AMC wants to block from being used at their theatres?

  10. Stella's Boy says:

Same here Hwjmk. And $5 on Thursdays for students and educators. It’s great.

Dreamcatcher has its charms. A good cast. Some truly bonkers moments. Its overall awfulness that has to be seen to be believed.

  11. Movieman says:

    Yep, I’m including “Dreamcatcher,” Bulldog.
    And “The Mangler” (which I hadn’t even realized–or remembered?–was a King movie).

  12. EtGuild2 says:

As someone whose rented two direct-to-RedBox Stephen King movies in the last few years (DOLAN’S CADILLAC with Christian Slater and CELL with John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson reuniting from 1408) I take issue here.

Nothing is as bad as CELL, which plays like something for those who thought Kristen Bell and Ian Somerhalder’s PULSE was too elitist and intellectual.

  13. Movieman says:

Quite the King completist, Ethan, lol.
I was referring to strictly theatrical releases. Of that group, “The Dark Tower” ranks as the nadir of King’s big-screen adaptations.
Particularly depressing/infuriating when you consider the talent involved.

  14. Stella's Boy says:

Every time I read something about Cell I think of what happened to Tod Williams. I love The Door in the Floor and figured he was a director to keep close tabs on. Since that 2004 film, the Paranormal Activity sequel and Cell. Not exactly what I imagined. Probably not what he imagined either.
