Yeah… this is pretty good for Blade Runner. I am not sure why people thought it would open to 50 or more, because that never made any fucking sense. This leads to the narrative, where fucking Blade Runner flopped, and we all know entertainment press love their shitty fucking narrative.

Yeah, at a certain level, the budget itself sets the bar of expectations.
I predicted right after the trailer came out that it would “under-perform,” at least in relationship to it’s budget. I was right and wrong. I see both sides of this. But ultimately I side with leah. Too much $$ spent on the sequel to a cult film. However, maybe this means someone can talk somebody into spending $100 million on a Buckaroo Banzai sequel directed by Edgar Wright.
I won’t hold my breath.
I understand people want to be kind about this opening. It was a risk that turned out a beautiful film; but this is a massive financial disappointment. $31 million is good for what it is artistically? Sure I’ll bite. But no one can look at me with a straight face and say that the studio spend on filming and P&A was with a $31 million domestic opening in mind. Come ON.
This is also a reminder of the fact that the Internet is not the real world. Online I read nothing but rabid anticipation. In the real world, the audience had little interest in these actors in this concept. Studios need to be careful of this disconnect.
This is hardly a bomb. Ghost in the Shell, Valerian, those were bombs. Disappointing? Depends on perspective, but this movie wasn’t going to ever appeal to wide audience without heavy deception.
It’s made 50,000,000 dollars in foreign markets, outpacing Fury Road and Interstellar in a couple of places. Still to open in China, Korea and Japan.
Brack, if they sold the plot. They could have gotten away without deception, because the plot is sort of fascinating. Hell. Hiding shit, doesn’t work anymore… except for Star Wars. You have to tell people what shit is about, or they aren’t going to be interested.
Yes, that goes against the whole chestnut online, about trailers needing to be less tell more show. Unfortunately, people aren’t going to spend money on something, in 2017, without you telling them some of what it’s about.
Night, welcome to you know, any year since movie discussions have been happening on the internet. It’s called the SCOTT PILGRIM effect. The thing with Blade Runner, is that China can easily save it. Sure. It doesn’t feature any Chinese actors or actresses, but it’s long, deliberately paced, and has some spectacle. Which, hopefully for Alcon… means the fucking thing breaks even. That’s all you can hope for; at this point.
Alcon, is owned by Fred Smith, so I am not crying for him or his company. They sold the film like shit, but the holidays are coming up, and everyone needs FEDEX during the holidays.
Anecdotal but I found many Gen Y and Millennials found the original Bladerunner to be slow. I think back in the 80s the film found life & respect in video. But even though plenty of films were influenced by Bladerunner, particularly in terms of its futuristic look, anyone seeing it for the first time, even 20 years ago, would believe it to be derivative. So, tapered expectations may have been in order to begin with. But with the anticipation came plenty of reasons to believe it’d be a hit.
The Thurs & Friday numbers suggest they got the lead-off runner on base but I think the film was literally too slow to come around to score. Word of mouth gunned this thing out before reaching 3rd. “Beautifully shot” sounds like something on the box of a whole grain fiber cereal, not a bright colored cartoon with a chance to win code inside that everyone’s going to wake up anticipating on Saturday morning.
I don’t know what’s coming out this w/e but I’m not expecting a great hold for B-2049. Even if some people call it a masterpiece, blather on about it’s artistry, the one or two, “I feel asleep” will push too many to the “I’ll wait for it to come out on video” category.
Actuals take BR2049 up to $32.7 million. Still not great, but $1.3 million more than the estimate.
Maybe it’s an indication of the surprises this movie has in store for us BO-wise.
