The Last Weekend Estimates by Klady (on this version of the blog)
The trajectory of The Last Exorcism is pretty classic, opening stronger than the rest of the weekend would be. On the other hand, the trajectory of Takers, going up on Saturday, is a little bit of a surprise. According to Len’s numbers, they’ll be battling into “actuals” for first place. Both companies will see $20m openings for this product as a win.
The Expendables will become Lionsgate’s #2 all-time domestic grosser by this time next week, behind only F9/11.
The Other Guys becomes Will Ferrell’s 4th $100m comedy in the last 5 years and #5 overall in his career, crossing the line tomorrow or Tuesday. Three of the last four were at Columbia. Perhaps Paramount will let Sony make Anchorman 2, since they don’t seem to want to do so.
Inception continues to chug along, overseas in particular. It’s closing in on $650m worldwide this weekend. So profits, while all coming out of post-theatrical revenues, will be significant, pushing past The Twilight Saga: Eclipse to be the #3 film of the summer and #1 for the year without 3D.
Sometime this week, Despicable Me will pass Shrek 4 to be the #2 animated film of the summer. Toy Story 3 won’t pass Shrek 2 to be the biggest domestic animated film of all time – at least, not without a serious re-release, which is likely precluded the DVD release -and it seems highly unlikely to pass Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs for biggest international animated film of all time. But by being so strong in both domestic and foreign… and having a 3D bump… it is/will be the biggest worldwide animated film by 14% – $17%
Speaking of 3D and re-releases, very solid numbers of the Avatar re-release.
Decent per-screen average on Inception still, although that new art-house movie “Avatar” seems to be doing well. Could make some money.
Doug R,
Saw the trailer for that Avatar picture and it feels like a travelogue-drama to me. I doubt it will play long in theaters, even in the art-house niche. Wait for it to come out on DVD, I doubt anything will be lost on the small screen.
“Eat Drink Pray”?… This is the college initiation version?…
I pride myself on knowing a great deal about the new movie releases, but what is this Avatar flick you guys are talking about? Never heard of it. And only $4M at the box office…clearly its being rejected. I also heard its by that one time wonder James Cameron. I knew he was a hack. These experimental sci flicks never work, especially from what I understand, is some underlying theme about respect for our environment and different cultures, or some shit like that. This Avatar is doomed for the Walmart $2.99 bin in 3 weeks. Bank on it.
“‘Eat Drink Pray’?… This is the college initiation version?…”
It’s the little-known sequel to “The Green Mile” they snuck into theaters the same time Julia Roberts’ movie was recalled by Columbia.
All the ads for Avatar name-check the director, it is doomed.
the avatar SE or whatever it’s called is quite lovely; some nice little low-key sequences like the abandoned school, jake and neytiri share a few good character moments (my fave is the name bit), and the final battle in particular is a bit more cohesive, overall a worthwhile enhancement.
David is clearly biased against the success of this Avatar picture, and downplaying what is a sensational gross for a small release.IT’S NOT JUST DOMESTIC, YA KNOW!!!
It’s Inception all over again. Screw you guys, I’m going home!
And its interesting to note that this $4M gross this niche sci fi flick benefits from the 3D bump. When you remove the numbers for the 3D screens that this flick is playing and extrapolate the actual numbers this ill received, none important, meaningless to film history flick would have done, one has to realize that once one takes into account that it is only playing on 3D screens, an obvious cash grab by the producers at Fox, you are left with a weekend box office of $0.00. This flick would have made nothing if it was playing in regular 2D. What the fuck were they thinking.
Speaking of Avatar, I stumbled upon this browsing Netflix last night: http://mutinycompany.com/unimaginative/papytar.jpg
The expanded “Avatar” did not go out arthouse — it isn’t even playing in the Hamptons — but “The American” will go arthouse/megaplex come Wednesday.
Speaking of early September, this must be the first time in the megaplex era where Labor Day will not be a dumping ground for Hollywood.
