Empire just posted the first Tintin pics. I have to say I’m impressed though the images aren’t anything special. The promise of seeing that world realised is one hell of a prospect, more exciting to me than almost anything on the horizon.
Unfortunately it already looks like the sequels will be delayed what with Jackson on Hobbit duty and Spielberg on Robocalypse and War Horse no?
There is a huge generational gap on Tin Tin (In America anyway). I’m almost 40 and have barely heard of it. And you’re talking to a comic book reading, cartoon watching, comic con attending nerd.
Hearing SPEILBERG and JACKSON might have meant more to me before CRYSTAL SKULL and LOVELY BONES.
I mean, it looks like a kiddie movie. I suppose we have to see it in motion to get an idea of the mocap stuff. but there’s nothing here that screams 200 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET.
We’ve had this discussion before, and guys like anghus or me will get yelled at by the IOs or people who really, really know their comic minutia or foreign fanboy properties or whatever it is, but, again, YEP:
37 years old, and will absolutely swear to you I never, ever, EVER heard of TINTIN in ANY context until they started talking about this Spielberg/Jackson movie. NO recollection of this ever existing in America.
Tin-Tin was the starting point for Rin Tin-Tin, right?
I’m 28 and remember watching the 90’s animated series on Nickelodeon. I liked it quite a bit. At the time, shows were either trying to be cool (Whether they succeeded or not depended), were condescending, or were written by people whose-to say it as kindly as possible-creative talents are limited to children’s television for a reason. It was a straight-up well executed action adventure series that didn’t insult me, and I hope the movie’s the same.
I’m surprised more people aren’t noting that Edgar Wright also wrote some of the screenplay. You can probably see Spielberg and Jackson teaming up eventually, but Wright seems like that wild card to spice up Jackson’s and Spielberg’s broad strokes, though it could also be like Michael Chabon’s credit in Spider-Man 2 where very little of what he wrote actually made it into the movie.
What’s baffling to me in the department of acclaimed graphic novels from foreign countries that didn’t really make noise here is someone picking up the rights to Naoki Urasawa’s Pluto. To explain Pluto, it’s literally Urasawa taking Astro Boy and turning it into something that might be made by Minority Report/A.I. era Spielberg. It’s great stuff, but man, if you thought Speed Racer was a gigantic flop, that’s a small ripple in the pond compared to how expensive a live-action Pluto would be and how few people would be interested. No matter how many Americans will get in line to say how much they don’t give a shit about Tintin, it’s guaranteed to make a decent amount of cash in foreign theaters. Pluto……. not so much. I think that one dies a quick death in early development.
