“I’m crazy about them both. That a parent’s zeal for her children’s future may have overcome her better judgment for a moment is not only unfortunate, it is, I know we parents would agree, a universal phenomenon. If ever there were a use for the Texas Verdict, this is it. For the uninitiated, the Texas Verdict is: “Not Guilty, but Don’t do it Again.”

Talent matters in Hollywood–but connections matter more. Often a lot more. Many who talk a good game re inclusion pay peanuts (or nothing) for entry/low-level jobs–which too often go to children of the connected/rich. The non-connected usually pile more debt on student debt.

And if there were 5 things that you think others might include but you don't think are necessary to include in a director's statement, what would those be and why?

Every time a female-lead movie does well the trades write about it like it's never happened before. Stop doing this. From Wonder Woman to Bridesmaids to Pitch Perfect to Girls Trip to Captain Marvel we as consumers have proven we want this content. IT AIN'T NEW.

if you’re having a bad day, just remember that charlize theron used to knit on set between takes of mad max: fury road and that many of the war boys asked her to teach them to knit too, leading to pictures like this pic.twitter.com/eygHobrHxn

New York Media CEO Pam Wasserstein: "I believe this restructuring is necessary to put us on the firmest possible footing as an independent company, though that does not make today any less painful." Teams most impacted are video, audience development, and copy/fact checking.

“I’m not talking about my own experience with Amazon, who backed Peterloo and who behaved impeccably: the problem really exists for younger filmmakers. The new streaming services all like to say they don’t work like Hollywood. But, actually, by suggesting a director works with a particular team, or asking why you are not using a female cinematographer, or wondering whether the film should have an upbeat ending, they are behaving in a traditional Hollywood, Louis B Mayer-way and it is totally unacceptable.”

Just saw Jordan Peele's "US" last night which premiered here at SXSW. A really scary movie with an underbelly of profundity. A movie that shines a dark spotlight on our duality and strikes at our souls. A significant movie–especially for these times in which we live.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by @Wilco despite being rejected by the band’s label is SUCH a remarkable album. It never grows old and should inspire artists everywhere to trust themselves first & foremost… At least in my opinion (and did I say it is great music to travel with — it is).

I just returned to this realization today.
Music is enjoyable don't get me wrong.

Twentieth Century Fox produced some of the highest-grossing films of all time (“Titanic,” “Star Wars”) and catapulted actors (Shirley Temple, Marilyn Monroe) into box office stars.

After years of work Jim and I flew from London to LA to show our final cut of DARK CRYSTAL to the studio. We sat a few rows behind the two execs in an empty screening room. The film ended. The execs stood up. And they walked out. Not saying a word to us. It was not a good day.

“Andy had simple dreams. He wanted to kiss that girl again—the one he met, the one who ghosted. He wanted to go back to the Ngong Hills in southern Kenya, where there is a tree on a hillside bending in the wind. He missed it so bad, he said. Andy wanted to recover from Parkinson’s. He wanted not to be lonely. He wanted to have a family, to feel little babies crawling on him.”

Remembering Spielberg Mentor Sidney Sheinberg

“Well, it’s simple. When it all comes together, Marvel will have access to almost all of its characters, and that’s something that most companies that have intellectual property characters have always had. Marvel, in a unique way over the years, has not had access to all of its characters, and now it will. That just seems like something that’s very appropriate and exciting for me — at the potential and the possibilities to come.”
“What Disney’s acquisition of Fox could mean for Marvel’s superheroes”
“I would love it if these powerful Hollywood kingmakers took all their clout, Academy cred, mentorship capability and ridiculous bags of money – and channeled that energy into the most crucial issue facing their industry today: inclusion. Please, don’t squander your outrage by planting your flag on this issue of theatrical releases.”
