'Rape of the Soul': Catholic Documentary Burns Up the Multiplex

While local reviewers last week digested the religious sentiment motivating The Passion of the Christ‘s new spinoff doc The Big Question, a much tinier film sneaked into the New York market brandishing some intense God fever of its own.
And if the title of the hard-right-wing Catholic “documentary” Rape of the Soul does not get your heathen ass to the movie theater, then maybe this mouth-breathing mouth-watering press release will:

Rape of the Soul documents and extracts pornographic and satanic images embedded in religious art, and presents shocking evidence that a major contributing factor to the rising incidence of priestly abuse can be attributed to prolonged exposure to the strategically placed images found in the everyday religious art that surrounds them. …

“Artists from DaVinci to Botticelli have embedded subliminal images into their art for centuries,” said producer/director of Rape of the Soul, Michael A. Calace. “In this case were found penises on crucifixes, occult symbols, swastikas, demonic faces and in modern works even the word ‘sex’ embedded into the images. The works in question include modern artist’s [sic] work currently on the covers of hymnals that at this very moment sit in the pews of churches throughout the U.S. and on children’s religious teaching aids.

“In my opinion, sex and horror is the fuel that promotes the scandalous behavior in the Church. Church leaders don’t have to look very far because the problem is coming from within the Church itself,” says Calace.

Calace, whose production company Silver Sword International boasts a mission to “merge media with morality,” also wants you to know he has packed his film with only the most knowledgeable “experts from the fields of clinical and child psychology, hypnosis, spirituality, and deceptive advertising.” And despite your first impression, this is not a hoax–Calace’s film is actually playing downtown, in White Plains and in six other markets nationally. The MPAA has supposedly smacked it with an “R” rating–that hallmark of family entertainment–and Calace is positioning Rape of the Soul as the early ideological alternative to The DaVinci Code. You have to love the guy’s ambition.
Anyway, I have long suspected the subliminal religious overtones behind Divine Interventions’ Jackhammer Jesus dildo (above), so it is about time somebody summoned the nerve to investigate. And while I doubt I will get the opportunity to check this one out before the Rapture (or before the print is recycled–whichever comes first), I will happily run a review if any of you lapsed Catholics out there have a chance to give it a look. It may not be a Gibson-level, dead-language epic smash, but never underestimate the entertainment value of an undersexed priest.

This kind of Catholic bashing is just sad. The Wachowski sister/brother team had to hobble V FOR VENDETTA with an unfortunate sequence that bashed Catholics too. The only solace here is that no one will see this film and Michael A. Calance will go back on welfare and drag on society in a different way.

  2. Jojo says:

Um, Ryan, wasn’t V For Vendetta “bashing” the Anglican church, not the Catholic church? And, considering the symbolic use of Guy Fawkes, isn’t that somehow, er, appropriate? Finally, I’m getting the impression from this article that Calance’s film is a reaction AGAINST Catholic-bashing….somebody correct me if I’m wrong.

  3. STV says:

Yes, JoJo–you are correct. Calace is a devout Catholic, and Rape of the Soul is his reaction to Catholic-bashing.

  4. V says:

I think Calace is not really catholic at all. It is an attack on the church itself. I won’t watch this faux documentary.

  5. Not Mike says:

But it could never be worse that Farenheit 911 and Bowling for Columbine was. This one might actually be based on some truth unlike Mr Moore’s screed’s.

  6. Raja says:

It seems to be taking on the artists..not really the church. I’m curious to see it.

  7. Frank says:

I am from Michigan. I just want to publicly apologize for Michael Moore. We’re still trying to figure out exactly what method he used to bust out of the Flint Home for the Insane Idiots.

  8. Eliz says:

People need to know the history of the church, past and present and look at this from the right perspective. Need to be objective, take off the blinders and see what is really happening in the world and Catholic church today. This people dont have energy or time for. They are too busy. Being a former Catholic, I am a born again christian, believe that one should worhip God alone, not an institution or a religion. In the end, it will be the spirit of God who will judge all, therefore Calace must do what he feels is right.

  9. izel says:

Oh well people can be so silly. It might be fun to go and laugh at, this sort of laughable stuff has been around for ages. I remember all these Vance Packard books in the 1950s like “Hidden Persuaders”
    Somethings never change.

I’m sure if there are any subliminal sex messages, it was quite accidental… I mean, you don’t think the church would knowingly try to persuade a person without their knowledge do you? Even if they did… you don’t think they would cover up a sex scandal do you? It HAS to be the work of satan… HAS to.

  11. archangel says:

I see goolish figures on my white plaster bedroom ceiling. The plasterer must have been demonic! C’mon! For the most part, this movie is about nothing more than a big budget Rorschach Test!
While there are some artists/people who are anti-christ and who have done work for the Church, embedding evil images in artwork, it is done almost exclusively without the Church’s knowledge. The same is true in secular artwork and BLATANT in a lot of music and Hollywood productions. For instance, when the Phantom of the Opera was in Ohio a few years back, I was taken back by the framing of the stage. There was no embedding there. Satan was visibly portrayed raping women. Plain to see . . . though none in my group saw it UNTIL I pointed it out.
Anti-christs are nothing new. Get over it. True Catholics don’t worship images. They worship the Lord alone God as they are commanded by the First Commandment! Lapsed Catholics are vincibly ignorant. No one should bash the Catholic Church. Sometimes it’s leadership is VERY human and sinful, but the Church and its dogmatic teachings are unchangable and pristine. Anyone who says different doesn’t know Catholicism and the teachings of the Church.
So what if some freaks embed their person frustrations and evil beliefs. What else is new. The faithful see the pictures of the Ones they love most; The Three Persons of the Most Holy Trinity and the Saints.
To infer that “troubled” Priests are doomed because of the evil images that surround them in Church is simply ludicrous. Sin destroys lives, not images. Grace saves.

  12. archangel says:

By the way, for ANYONE to compare the Divine Interventions’ Jackhammer Jesus dildo to any work of art is . . . well . . . as crass as the item itself. If you check out the company’s website it is all about dildos.

  13. dxzx says:

Going by the quote “Keep your friends close, but always keep your enemies closer” …… I will watch this movie while all of you guys sit and whine about it.

  14. francobu says:

I saw this film in the Boston area last night, and it is probably one of the funniest films of the year, although it wasn’t meant to be. Calace is a Catholic, although he seems to be one that liked it better pre-Vatican II.
Let me sum up the movie.
Calace tried to produce another movie in Toronto, this woman who works for the Archdiocese didn’t give him permission (long story). He was pissed off, he looked at their website http://www.archtoronto.org/ and got freaked by the art and decided to launch this campaign. In the painting it depicts an orgy, with people fondling each other, there is a demonic image hidden, there is then letter A in the thing the kid holding on the left pointing at Jesus saying that Jesus is the anti-christ, oh and I think the word Sex is embedded in this image somwhere. This led him to make the movie, although watching the first part of the movie, you get the sense he is doing this to get back at the archdiocese.
He then goes through about 5-8 or so works of religious art that are hundreds of years old, pointing out the penises, vaginas, 666, demons, homosexuality and aliens in them. Then he launches his attack on modern church art, especially that used by Oregon Catholic Press.
We could not help laugh throughout the movie and by the end my friend and I tried to play along. I would suggest to go to the movie or rent the video if you want a good laugh!

  15. Steve Kudlak says:

“Very Interesting” as certain comedian used to say, which probably dates me that generation that Concervative Christians love to hate.
Anyway I belong to a group dedicated to defend the Bill of Rights which among other things the Right of Americans to worship as they please and anyone or any deity they please. We call our selves “cruzrights” which is from the nickname of the city and county in which most of us live Santa Cruz, which of course means “Holy Cross”
This seeing things in art works happened in my past. I took a ceramucs course. I got really into handbuilt pots that had what I thought were lipped shappoed entry ways and cave like internal spaces which reminded me of things geological. A Feminist Scholar saw the works (pots) and being a fan of Judy Chicago Thought that Steve Kudlak looked like Steph Kudlak and that I was female and that I had “great feminist sensitivty abiuyt my own body” an my internal spaces such as my womb! Well since I dom’t have a real womb, the best I claim that I have some strange emotional empathy with women in some deep way I have no rational understanding of. Or I could try some science fictiony exoplanation.
My only question is why our webpage gets so many hits from the :rape of the soul Anti-Catholic Documentary people who are so actived on AM and FM Christian Talk Radio. Curiouser and Curiouser. Now if they would only send $20.00 bills to our POBX to help in our secret figth against Satan!;)
Actually U/we have been experimenting with various formats and layoutg, including naturally sloppy which got us calls and letters from Indondesia and the Middle East talking making noises how nice it was to find non-slick, phoney Americans…..who make spelling errois just like he and his friends do, I explained how the Great Vowel Shift caused that and that net English as made presciptiove grammarians the world over go into fits and conniptions. Surprisingly the guy who had been educated in India got all the jokes as we laugghed and had a good conversattion aboiut human rights in his part of the world and in my part of the world paid for by an multinatioinal whole will remain unmentioned.
So one can see the result of one webpage supposedly dedicated at one some group in some medium suiized city in California, I peroanlly consider it a success if we get one person to see Americans as individuals and humans just like themselves.
Note I have been trying out webpage formats to see what chnages do what. Right now, cozy and friendly and o[en to all but with real information seems to be the way to go.
AND REMEMBER PEOPLE CAN READ ANYTHING INTO ANYTHING THEY WANT,,,,,I HAVE FRIENDS WHO FIND PENTAGONS ON NAPS EVERYWHERE. i ONLY HUNG UP
SOME WRAPPED COPPER WIRS FOR AN FM ANYENBNA THE
LEFTOVERS I HUNG OVER A PUSH PIN ON A MAP. IT NEATLKY DEMARCATED EVERYTHING I USED TO LIKE TO GO TO IN “THE CITY” AS WE CALL SAN FRANCISCO OUT HERE. NEAT AS I THOUGHT AS IT WAS I TOOK IT DOWNSO MY HOUSEMATE’S CONSPIRACY MINDED BROTHERR MIND READ INTO IT TOO MUCH AND START SOME STRANGE RUNMOUR THAT I RUN A CHILD ABUSE CULT OR SOMETHING….PROBABLY NOT HE IS NICER THAN THAT….HE STILL GETS ANGRY WHEN I GET LUCKY WITH YOUNGER GIRLDS (READ COLLEGE STUDENTS)
Anyway this has rambled in way too long…but isn’t that the purpose of blogs?

I was sent an email regarding the film, Rape of the Soul and I ended up at a page with a “wishy washy” kind of comment from a David Pearson, (including his email address). Having already dealt with some of the most astoundingly detailed subliminal images in religious art for some time myself, I sent a quick email to David. As I also made an advert for the film, Rape of the Soul / Silver Sword and posted it on my web site, encouraging people to see the movie, I decided to send a copy of my email to the email addresses given at Silver Sword International because when they see what I have, Rape of the Soul II, the sequel, would wipe the floor with any previously released / discovered subliminal imagery!
These images I have (and there are loads) are like nothing seen before. As I explain on my web site, all the experts I have contacted over the past couple of years, (professional artists / image experts) have ran a mile. NO ONE is prepared to take this on. They know exactly what the subliminal images are and WHO published them. Because of the subliminal issue, I am interested in seeing the movie, Rape of the Soul if I can get hold of a copy in England but from what I have seen so far, (from the trailer on the web site), these subliminals it exposes are pretty much like the “old type” subliminals. The new ones I have, are extremely detailed and are artistically intricate and complex and are like nothing seen before on this scale. I even contacted some Satanic groups for their opinion and this is my next page for the web site. I am a bit behind with this and the web site updates as I am currently involved in a works Tribunal, as I showed the subliminals I had to the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) / Church leader, (work is, or should I say WAS, a Christian based Centre where I worked with who I thought, were great friends) but they tried to get rid of me from the church as they were so scared of becoming involved in informing the public. (I was asking them to help expose what I had). I lost my job. My family lost our church. All our friends have gone and have cut off all contact.
There is much, much more to this as this is a massive story. I also have “the Satanic statement” as I call it, giving detailed information, apparently from the people who are doing this to the public….but that is something else! (Contains bad language).
Please check out the info at the ebay link I sent http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=9513631196&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT
and have a flick around the web site, http://www.welcome.to/witnesscd to understand the full implications.
If anyone at Silver Sword, Michael A Calase, or any other professional (artist or expert anywhere) would like to comment on the subliminals I have, I would be more than happy to hear from them. If I can be sent an advance copy of Rape of the Soul on DVD or VHS (PAL format for England) as it may be a very long time before it is released in England, if ever! I would be most grateful.
Thank you for your time and beware of “nicely dressed people” who call at your door with “colourful magazines”…..now you know what’s in them!
    Kind regards, Paul Kevin.

Well the movie is made of an Catholic perspective. The bishops are responsible for the liberal Vendetta against the Faith. Ultimately Vatican 2 and its ‘aggiornamento’ i responsible! From Sweden MR

Quote Unquotesee all »

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
