Unexpectedly impressed with the Snow White and the Huntsman trailer. It might actually be a good thing for Julia Roberts that her Mirror Mirror flick will drop a few weeks before, because following this might have been difficult.

The strange thing is we now live in a world where the Julia Roberts flick gets a March release and the Kirsten Stewart flick gets a summer release. Not that KStew is the bigger draw in any way, but does anyone know the story behind the release of these two movies?

I’ve heard of stories behind stuff like A Bugs Life/Antz, Mission to Mars/Red Planet and Armageddon/Deep Impact.

Safe with Jason Statham looks very serviceable too. It instantly reminded me of Mercury Rising with Bruce Willis. Admittedly I had to IMDB Bruce Willis to get the title. I could not remember it at all.

Billy Crystal hosts the Oscars. Let me be the first to say “meh”.

By far the laziest and safest choice possible.

I think I would have preferred no host. Think of the time theyd save.

Checking out Armond White’s Jack and Jill review:

    http://cityarts.info/2011/11/11/plumbing-ethnicity-sandler%E2%80%99s-jack-jill-and-tyler-perry/

    This part is a classic:

“In Jill drag, Sandler looks like young women you see on the subway; she’s a homely archetype Fanny Brice, Judy Canova and Martha Raye made popular.”

Can someone please confirm that young women on the subway looks like Adam Sandler in drag? Or Armond is living in a different world than everyone else.

  4. Don R. Lewis says:

Adam Sandler in drag looks like Penny Marshall. That is all.

  5. Krillian says:

I was impressed by the SW&TH trailer too. Really looking forward to Theron in that. It’s also genius on their part they got the first trailer out. Your move, Mirror Mirror.

  6. Keil Shults says:

Crystal will be way better than last year’s misfire, and I’m glad to see him getting in the public eye once again.

    Next year? Patton Oswalt. 🙂

  7. Glamourboy says:

Billy Crystal has been the best host that the Oscars have ever had. So many of his comic bits on the oscars have become classics. There’s no downside in bringing him back. Every other host since him has been either disappointing or a train wreck. I was dreading Eddie Murphy. He is an arrogant, self-satisfied comic who sold out his talent years ago. What’s wrong with going back to someone who hits a home run every time?

  8. bulldog68 says:

So The Phantom Menace 3D drops Feb 10th. With all the blowback about the raping their childhood will Star Wars fans turn out for this? Or will their ‘hatred’ make this the first Star Wars dud at the box office? 3D spectacles are still box office gold internationally, but do you guys think this is another easy $100M grosser in Lucas’ back pocket?

  9. movieman says:

Saw “J&J” at a (packed) matinee today and it’s infinitely better than the putrid trailer would have indicated.
What I liked–and why it’s better than any “Adam Sandler Movie” since “Zohan” (I’m not counting “Funny People” which was a “Judd Apatow Movie”)–is its Hellzapoppin’ willingness to toss anything into the mix
and see whether it sticks (or earns a laugh). Unapologetically non-p.c. and crammed with more wtf celebrity cameos (everybody from Regis Philbin to Bruce Jenner) than a Muscular Dystrophy Labor Day Weekend Telethon, I had a shockingly good time.
The critics who trashed it either (a) allowed the abysmal trailer to color their reactions before walking into the theater (and may have already written their reviews in advance); or (b) never appreciated an “Adam Sandler Movie” in their lives, and were therefore incapable of appreciating its finer points.
Bonus props for featuring Al Pacino’s best screen performance ( s**t you not) in years, and the opening/closing credit doc footage of real-life twins which is both very funny and unexpectedly touching.

  10. JS Partisan says:

Immortals moves slower than molasses but it’s such a wonderfully unique action film, that I am really looking forward to Mirror Mirror now.

  11. LexG says:

JS, does one HAVE to see it in 3D? I love Tarsem’s visuals in his previous two movies… Not a huge fan of 3D, though. Is it vital to the experience?

  12. sanj says:

Jason Reitman has a sister that does short movie
    reviews and interviews …

    watch a few – maybe you’ll like them …

  13. JS Partisan says:

Lex, not really but the fight scene at the end has some tremendous freaking usage of 3D.

  14. sanj says:

slashfilm podcast with Paul Scheer ..actor / host ..

40 minutes of fun talk about movies . this is just as good
as any dp/30 or better ..

    http://www.slashfilm.com/filmcast-dark-ep-166-insanity-piranha-3d-guest-paul-scheer/

DP – do you have time to listen / watch your competition for actor interviews ?

  15. hoopersx says:

Perhaps, in light of the Penn State tragedy, the phrase “raped our childhood” should either be temporary retired or at least be reserved for the proper context.

  16. Tim DeGroot says:

The deleted scenes on the Blue Velvet Blu-Ray…holy shit. A must-own for Lynch fans.

  17. SamLowry says:

Does it include the rape of Jeffrey, the scene MacLachlan begged Lynch to cut? I seem to recall we did see him pulling his pants up after he’s pushed out of the car, but were left to wonder what led to that.

Also, is the consensus that “Movie Fanatic” is a worthless hack site? I went there a month ago during the “Footloose” kerfuffle, was amazed by the incredibly shallow review and left a comment that went something like “We know what you think of the stars, but what do you think of the movie?”

Though I bookmarked the page so I could go back and see if there was a reply, I had to recall my comment from memory because it was deleted. Someone else left a comment unrelated to mine but now that’s gone, too. ( http://www.moviefanatic.com/2011/10/footloose-movie-review-everybody-get-loose-its-awesome/#comment-10053 )

So what would these guys have to do to win the trifecta for shameless ass-kissing masquerading as journalism–be exposed as studio employees? Get caught taking pay for awesome pull-quotes?

  18. Philip Lovecraft says:

Finally caught up with “The Rum Diary” last night. Beautiful to look at — the jungle, the beaches, the old city, Amber Heard, but it never achieves lift off. The entire thing is just absolutely flat. A real shame, too, as it seemed like all the elements were there. Nope.

    Mickey Rourke Talks Immortals

    funny stuff

  20. sanj says:

watched The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence)

yikes. not good. the event didn’t bug me but lack of character story did.

there’s pretty much 12 people + 1 fat crazy guy in the film… one of them might do something interesting film that’ll get a dp/30 in the future.

  21. Don R. Lewis says:

I finally caught WARRIOR last night and was so blown away. what a great film. There was ALOT that didn’t work (that bro who looks like a buffed Conan O’Brien for one) but overall, I was completely drawn in and had NO clue what would happen. Tom Hardy is totally awesome. I wish this film could sneak into the top ten for Best Picture.

I also saw BUTTER today and yipes. Not a very good movie but a fair to middlin’ one all the way. The real stars are Rob Corddry and Olivia Wilde, the latter of which is not only smoking/trashy hot but hilarious. On the flip side, Corddry does a nice, low key dramatic turn. I also thought Jennifer Gardner was really good. The issue with that film is that it doesn’t know what it wants to be tone wise. There’s about 10 f-bombs and some pretty clever inappropriate humor so it’s going to be rated “R.” There’s also some truly sinister comedy in the film as well. Yet it seems to want to be a crowd pleaser and a “nice” film and I don’t think you can have it both ways. Strange that it got such high-caliber buzz when it’s just a nice little film. Sorta.

  22. LexG says:

Wait what? NO, NO, NO! Joel Edgerton IS the better Warrior performance! And the brother to root for!

TTSS is the Hardy performance of the year!

  23. Don R. Lewis says:

Everytime I saw Edgerton I kept thinking he was Conan O’Brien on ‘roids.

  24. LexG says:

Yeah but Hardy is just Simon Rex on ‘roids.

  25. Don R. Lewis says:

A brooding Simon Rex. I’ll be honest- Hardy was scary in that role. I never knew what he might do. That’s good acting. Or, I’m a huge pussy. Or, both.

  26. sanj says:

    Malin Ackerman needs a dp/30 .

catch .44 trailer … out on dvd in a month.. its got Bruce Willis

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkVL5i3lcrQ&feature=player_embedded

  27. LexG says:

How is BRUCE WILLIS going DTV now?

Ranted it before, bears repeating: This TOTAL BULLSHIT OF VOD is ruining movies– so much stuff lately has come and gone, and nobody would book it except for one far-flung Santa Monica theater, because it’s a day-and-date VOD or a DTV– Trespass, The Ward, Burke and Hare, that Renny Harlin thing, apparently Catch .44, that weird Statham movie called 13 that just disappeared without a trace… and now the latest victim, SON OF NO ONE, which I REEEEEEEEEEEEEEALLY wanted to see, but has already come and gone in ONE WEEK in said LA theater on the ass-end of town, even though it stars Al Pacino and Channing Tatum.

Bring back the old release patterns and video windows.

  28. scooterzz says:

it’s only the ‘ass-end of town’ to people who actually live in the real ass-end of town….

  29. LexG says:

Didn’t you say like a zillion times you live in North Hollywood? IE, about four blocks from me?

  30. Krillian says:

That’s two Statham titles within a couple months that are DTV, and now two Willis titles.

talk show host Craig Ferguson interview on critics …

PLAYBOY: Do you just tolerate the “experts” when they criticize you on Twitter?

FERGUSON: I block them. Anything remotely negative, I block them. That’s the most fantastic thing about Twitter. It’s like Stalin without all the death. If I don’t like you, I just get rid of you. It’s funny. People always tell me, “If you read the good reviews, you’ve got to read the bad reviews.” No you don’t. I want to read only good shit about me. I don’t want to read bad shit. What do you think I am, insane? I already think enough bad shit about myself.

PLAYBOY: You’re not curious why someone dislikes you?

FERGUSON: I’m really not. I used to be curious. I used to want to know what I did that made them so angry. Now I’m pretty sure they were already angry long before me. They were mad before the joke turned up. They were heckling before they got to the club. They were just doing it in their mind.

  35. sanj says:

Michael Fassbender would make a good Bono from u2 band … he can play him.

old movie critics love musicals – so this is where he ends up winning an oscar .

    i predicted this first.

  36. sanj says:

DP – how about more dp/30 updates in December … find everybody who hasn’t done one is 6 months and get them in….at least 100 actors qualify ..

aren’t actors angry that they don’t get invited back or
do they like doing super easy tv interviews instead ?
    hard to tell.

    i recheck the dp/30 – tiff in 10 minutes and theres like 5 different dp/30’s missing .

how about a entire dp/30 movie money fail – where somebody talks about a movie where they lose millions of dollars. that stuff never ever happens. even if its a good movie or bad movie. your the money guy and you don’t talk movie money in interviews.

also a dp/30 inside a blockbuster before it totally goes out of business .

  37. Paul MD (Stella's Boy) says:

Isn’t the Willis movie with 50 Cent and Ryan Phillippe, Setup, also going direct-to-DVD? I’d never heard of Catch .44 before. Willis always seems good for an opening at least in the low double-digits (stuff like Assassination of a High School President-type movies being the exception).

Watched Insidious and X-Men: First Class over the weekend. Really, really liked the latter a lot. Great cast, solid action and effects, moves quickly without feeling too abbreviated. Just a good time on a Saturday night at home.

Insidious turned out to be a huge disappointment. Not a Wan fan but was enthused by all the good reviews and the surprising box office success. Loved the first hour. Some very creepy and effective moments. I was on edge in just the right way and looked forward to seeing how it played out. Then Lin Shaye and the Syfy Channel ghost hunters showed up. It turns into a laughably bad movie remarkably fast. “I call it The Further.” The misplaced banter between the ghost hunters. The fact that the other 2 children totally and inexplicably disappear after they move halfway through the movie, never to be seen or heard again. The more subtle and suggestive suspense of the first half replaced with obvious boo scares, loud music cues, and other such nonsense.

  38. sanj says:

Carey Mulligan has done so many dp/30 .. i wanna see her do dp/30 with other actors .

yeah let her be the guest host for a few – sure it’ll cost half a million dollars or something but it’s totally worth it.

dp/30 with actor guest hosts – good idea ? or they can’t possibly be objective …

  39. torpid bunny says:

Patrick Fugit and Claire Danes appear to have an almost identical facial structure.

  40. sanj says:

    reading wired magazine .

this dude has money in top social websites ..
hundreds of millions of dollars .

this guy is the real social network.

plus he has a 100 million dollar house.

no new star trek movie next year …

    anybody care ?

also i had 2 hours of tv shows to catch up on but then
some movie podcasts just pop up and i have to listen to those just to get rid of them.

stuff you watch just to get rid of it ?
