oh a byob, i didn’t realise…
i’m on a HEINOUS river phoenix binge the likes of which strikes me every couple years or so when the pain/joy of it all comes flooding back like a debris-strewn tsunami as if it was yesterday – my obsession usually triggered by some small thing, a birthday/anniversary/mention on a blog/etc that balloons out of control – so for my own amusement (or any other fans of the late, great river out there in cyberspace), the first two installments of my silly clip retrospective, ‘great moments with river’:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKDDKwZy06s&feature=related
the goofball
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6LWvNdswxY&feature=related
and the homecoming (sometimes words simply aren’t enough)
(maybe next year i’ll get to see river’s final go as ‘boy’ in ‘dark blood’, a prospect both daunting and exciting considering the rumours of the deeply troubled shoot and river’s untimely death before most the interiors were shot… until then, time is forever frozen for one of cinema’s finest young talents. i miss him horribly)
You know, I always liked the guy and I’m sure he’d be a DiCaprio level star now and all, buuuuut…
Anytime MOVIEMAN and leahnz go all mooning over River Phoenix and what could’ve been, does anyone ever have the blasphemous thought that maybe if he were still around he’d be doing DTVs with Val Kilmer or doing a wacky Fox sitcom like Garrett Dillahunt, or doing BEETHOVEN 7 with Judge Reinhold? In the much the same way that Kurt Cobain is forever immortal, we have frozen-in-time memories of this sensitive longing artiste, but, you know, someone in 2001 might’ve thought Devon Sawa was gonna go on to be Brad Pitt. Who’s to saw River today wouldn’t be where Jason Wiles is, or Michael Rappaport or Sasha Jenson or Skeet Ulrich?
For all we know, he’d be on LAW AND ORDER.
because river clearly had more acknowledged talent and charisma in one nose hair than all those mediocrities in their entirety. i’d like to see rappaport’s version of ‘mike’ in ‘private idaho’
(he liked acting but did not dig the movie business, my guess is he would have been a musician had he lived)
Underrated/awesome Phoenix performance, FWIW: I Love You to Death… Reeves and Hurt in that movie are gold.

that exasperated sigh
I used to like River Phoenix, but then I took an arrow to the knee…
lol foamy, game nerd
I’m amused you know that meme. 😉
LexG: You raise a valid point about frozen-in-time memories. As I have said before: For all we know, had death not intervened, James Dean might have wound up playing the gruff older partner in some TV cop show, and Marilyn Monroe might have been the minx/villainess in a prime-time soap opera.
meme is my middle name…(? no not really, but i bet io knows that meme)
fwiw re: ‘dark blood’ and my earlier “deeply troubled shoot” comment, i didn’t mean to imply it was troubled because of river – who apparently with samantha’s and his family’s support had managed to come out the other side of his binge-drugging when around his rat-bag friends (when people refer to river as a ‘junkie’ they clearly don’t know the circumstances of his use, which by all accounts from friends and loved ones around at the time consisted of binging when his friends had it interspersed with sustained ‘clean’ periods when not around those certain people, not a daily addiction) – but rather what was by all accounts a contentious and acrimonious relationship between george sluizer and judy davis, who it seems clashed with both the director and river, resulting in river reportedly being miserable on set. i didn’t want that possible misunderstanding out there based on my comment
(a bit of dark blood footage, a lot of dutch and a diplomatic bit about george and judy davis at the end, appallingly bad vid)

watched bag of bones part 1 … didn’t find it scary – pretty boring . DP tell King to fix up his movie so people
like sanj can enjoy it …

and now with a few spare minutes, the second installment of my wildly in-demand (not) ‘great moments with river’ retrospective, in slightly belated honour of the 18th anniversary of his tragic passing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgC2mlyIEI8
(technically a great moment for a legend of cinema but intrinsically linked to one of riv’s great perfs; lumet with the hairspray is oddly touching – the comment from what sounds like a russian guy at the end is just odd)

a word or three about this second clip, one my faves, unused footage from ‘my own private idaho’ and perhaps one of the most bizarre and genius of river’s career.
on the surface a study in the typically bizarre, random, time-stretched, awkward, weirdly amusing unique van sant sensibility and mise en scene…
mike silently wanders a pasture – coughs horribly – takes a slash in a wheelbarrow (i’m guessing probably the only publicly available footage of river taking a piss, and quite a gusher to boot) – eats pasta – fidgets – tears at his wild wolf-boy hair – digs at his scraggle sideburns – acts gross and spits out his food like a petulant child – does a little music-less jig in his seat, all the while staring at mike, who paws at the giggling girl like a horny puppy…
but as is often the case with van sant there lurks an undercurrent of casual cruelty beneath the quirky patina of mike’s awkward ticks and the giggling banality of the meal; mike is literally squirming in discomfort watching the person he’s in love with obliviously fondle an object of his desire right in front of him, in the process betraying scott’s callous, clueless, cavalier and selfish nature — and as it turns out, cementing my quiet loathing of scott, even as i don’t feel his intent is malicious, to hurt his friend, but knowing exactly how mike feels about him his utter thoughtlessness and disregard for mike’s feelings is somehow far worse in its casual infliction of pain. he just doesn’t give a shit.
i’d think mike’s plight brings up feelings everyone can probably relate to, at some point most of us having watched as a friend we covet – but who doesn’t feel the same way/reciprocate – gets together with someone else, that horrible feeling of rejection in the pit of your stomach, smashed down as you put on a brave face.
the look in river’s eyes as he squirms – watching and listening, trying to brush off the pain as time stretches out interminably – is quietly excruciating, and probably the closest mike comes to showing anger towards scott for his selfish behaviorr. This is punctuated brilliantly when mike blows a cloud of smoke into their faces from off camera in a final impotent ‘fuck you’ at the end; bizarre, awkward, horrible, painful, perfect.
(having said that i can understand why van sant left this out of the final cut, because even as our focus/empathy is with mike, it’s a depiction of scott’s casual cruelty that comes perhaps too early in the context of the overall arc of mike and scott’s relationship)
The song River, about River, is one of my absolute favorite Natalie Merchant songs. I can’t say I really know his work though. Only seen a few things he was in.
I don’t know how but I had actually heard of that Kristen Lanae before, Sanj. Is she about to do something big or notable?
“The song River, about River, is one of my absolute favorite Natalie Merchant songs. I can’t say I really know his work though. Only seen a few things he was in.”
wow, that’s so depressing — esp coming from a fan of cinema
watched snowmageddon syfy …yeah i think i’m the only one on here who did this .
a town of like 12 people or something try to overcome a crazy snowstorm caused by a snowglobe …
overall – it wasn’t that bad …acting was decent …except the last 10 minutes…all logic goes out .
also watched new simpsons episode … this is future episode where bart / lisa and maggie all age to 40 years old …and somehow they make it so maggie doesn’t talk even then. DP should get a dp/30 with maggie simpson and get her to talk ..DP get on that.
crap, i meant to mention above but pressed for time spaced it, the footage from ‘MOPI’ above surfaced as part of james franco’s tribute to river, ‘my own private river’ comprised of van sant’s dailies/unused shots from the production.
(i still refuse to believe that the greatest actor of his generation will be forgotten)
