BYOB Memorial Day Weekend

I’m back in LA… I spent whatever focus I had on Thursday on a long piece (which I hope to push out today/Friday), Twitter, and re-learning how to multitask. Hope you’re all well and enjoy the holiday weekend. More on Cannes, etc, to come.

thank gawd it’s a three-day weekend…we might actually have time to finish it…..

    that said, welcome back…

I just got back home from a month long movie shoot in Tennessee….good God. How movies ever get made is a small miracle. How people work on a movie for 3-6 months is beyond me. Amazing experience but I’m not doing shit for at least 10 days.

Also– more self whoring. Our documentary WORST IN SHOW got picked up by the Logo channel (I don’t know why, no dogs came out in the movie) and it premieres tomorrow night. You can also watch it on the Logo channel website for a few weeks. Hope some of you will watch it. It’s not a masterpiece by any stretch but it truly is “the little movie that could.” We went from getting into only 3 festivals to a cable premiere so yippe-ki-yay!

David, are you going to do any kind of Cannes wrap up? Enjoyed the reviews you posted here, but I’m assuming you saw a lot more that you didn’t have time to write about – if that’s so, I’d like to hear your perspective on some of the other titles…

    Joss Whedon vs DP …

how did DP miss the avengers for dp/30 – there are 8 major actors and like 200 people behind the scenes …

there’s no history with any tv shows and DP – firefly – dollhouse – buffy and angel – over 20 main actors never
seemed to get a dp/30 in the last 5 years

if your a Joss fan aren’t you bit confused why he and his tv cast got any dp/30 yet ?

thats why comic con exists i guess…. guess nothing will impress DP – not the billion dollars avengers made or the millions of fans his tv series has .

i’m a buffy fan but i didn’t like the last season and
not the biggest fan of firefly …

i was expecting somebody from the hunger games and john carter do a dp/30 – if you spend that kind of money –
you might as well get as much promotion as you can ..

  6. sanj says:

new music video – its like a mini movie – bank robbery + chase by police – things blowing up

the singer is a judge on reality tv series the voice

    Maroon 5 performing Payphone – 5 minutes

Samuel Bayer directed this – he did a lot of green day music videos and the classic Nirvana – “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video – he needs a dp/30

  7. sanj says:

new tv scifi series called Continuum from showcase tv channel

    first episode

City Protective Services officer Kiera Cameron is transported from 2077 to deal with eight of the world’s deadliest terrorists.

Rachel Nichols is the lead star – its a time travel series so it could be confusing when it moves along ..or could be quite good …but it seems like another cop show chasing bad guys ..

since most of you don’t have showcase or never heard of it – it’ll be on the internet for download in a day

Rachel Nichols – LOOK AT HER!!! needs a dp/30 .
she’s dona a lot of tv series just like Jennifer Garner and yet she don’t have a dp/30 either.

dp/30 emmy watch only applies to people on usa network.
    sucks but kinda true .

  8. sanj says:

lots of big star in Les Miserables movie musical – yet the only one that seems interesting is Anne Hathaway …lets see if DP can finally get a dp/30 with her.

really she should have gotten one for love and other drugs
but one day was just horrible .

also Kristen Bell – not a fan of her movies right now – you again – when in rome – horrible – but i like her tv work .. she also needs a dp/30 …
and yet her best interviews is with Craig F on late night. DP can’t possibly beat those interviews. they are real and funny.

plus there’s a Parker Possy dp/30 that never got posted.
    still waiting for that.

the Jennifer Lawrence dp/30 is pure gold. DP should be
    out promoting that every day.

the dp/30’s i request never seem to happen.

  9. sanj says:

hey DP – Margaret movie – got a lot of awards buzz –
any dp/30 coming from anybody involved ?

how many months till a movie starts and ends – till the dp/30 expires ?

is it worse for you when an indie film doesn’t get a dp/30 or when the big studios don’t have one ?

safe house is coming to dvd next week – Denzel and Ryan
    need a dp.30 too you know …

also did you see Get the Gringo – Mel Gibson ? you liked
the Beaver movie – so where’s the dp/30 with Mel

also when you were in Cannes – did Jean Dujardin or Berénice Bejo show up ? i’m waiting for another dp/30 .

when the big movie stars don’t show up – why not yell at them using the blog ? regardless of how much the movie costs or awards it gets .

DP dress up in a fat suit or dress like a lady just to get
Tyler Perry and Eddie Murphy for a dp/30 .

get some glasses and a baseball hat and try to get an dp/30 with Michael Moore….

put on the bright red lipstick and shoes and finally get Sarah Jessica Parker and Julia Roberts

time to get some dp/30’s with some super hard to get actors and directors this year and then hype the hell
    out of it .

international actors / directors don’t care about star power and just show up anyways …

  10. sanj says:

    Kevin Pereira leaves G4.

10 years on 1 tv network and the mainstream media doesn’t notice at all.

Kevin’s now doing his own business of making web and business stuff – this is stuff DP should like or get
    some interest in ….

also am i the only one on here that watches any g4 tv programming ? guess everybody else is too busy with amc / hbo shows

  11. sanj says:

over the last year i’ve had maybe 25 suggestions for dp/30 people …and not of come true .

it sucks that i’m a nobody and all of the people seem to get rejecte3d for unknown reasons.

9 out 10 people i could suggest are not super famous . it’s not like i’m asking for the same person 10 times in a row.
to be fair – LexG would probably want K-Stew 10 times in a row and that still wouldn’t be enough for him…

i’m glad there are hundreds of people doing interviews with actors / directors and putting up on the web.
not all them are super amazing but hey we get more diversity .

even if DP got 10% of my picks for a dp/30 – then i would
have a track record – and then DP might want more or less of my suggestions.

i still likr the dp/30 sundance ones the best – they are more real – the tiff ones are different cause the people want awards and DP has to be all serious .

i’m sure like 90% of people on the boards want DP to only talk about box office numbers and DP should get with a few people on here and skype a dp/30.

i’d be totally fine if the 25 people i want for a dp/30 got all rejected if DP just spent a few minutes looking at
    the people first.

shout out to Rebecca Black for Friday – i’m sure all
she super fancy music critics wouldn’t give her a chance… but social media made her 100 million youtube views. people do like watching the “bad” stuff.

i wonder how much power the other mcn staff have over getting people for dp/30’s . they are more powerful
than most the people on the boards.

also can DP spend 8 hours on youtube watching other
people’s interviews with actors / directors and movie people ?

  12. David Poland says:

sanj – The truth is that DP/30 is sometimes an aggressor in chasing interviews and is more ofter a passive exercise in trying to manage requests and to work with publicists who feed the pipeline. There are publicists and studios that want it all the time and others that could not care much less… and some that just think of it as a place to put their writers or directors because it’s (trying to be) a real conversation and not 5 minute junket blather.

I have been willing to interview people who don’t seem to have very long careers, but I don’t make a habit out of it because they usually don’t have a lot to say. And I don’t really want to be G$ – God bless them – and guarantee a bikini interview every week so I can build more geek boys as an audience.

The situation is often complicated… and it would not be cool to sit here and explain why this interview that was supposed to happen did not and so on.

DP/30 is still something I, mostly, pay for out of pocket. I am a one-person show who has a day job (MCN/THB) and hires cameramen. And so, things could be a lot better. I need to stop, take a deep breath, have that breath not be filled with time with my kid and wife, and get DP/30 to the next step and then I would have a lot more flexibility in how things play out and who is on the show.

Frankly, I am very lucky to have had all the support for DP/30 that I have had. Much of it is earned by doing something that talent feels good about, doesn’t insult them, and has a shelf life. But the personal publicists and studio publicists who make this happen can turn off the faucet and it isn’t like they lost an EW cover. So I am very grateful. And hope to step it up this year and as we go forward.

  13. sanj says:

DP – the last 10 dp/30’s have mostly been indie films – its like your beating indiewire at their own game ..

waS the trip to Cannes worth it / the movies would have come here in a few months .

the dp/30’s are now competiting with actors who podcasts themselves and their actor friends – it’s not that objective but they sometimes give way better interviews that way –

the big actors from the summer blockbusters didn’t show up – hunger games – battleship – john carter – but i would have figured the people behind the scenes could have – the people who make the visual effects and the sound guys .

do people who’ve done dp/30’s at least 3 times need to have a studio publicist to do a meeting with you ?
all this fancy technology should make it easier . 500 dollar ipads should be good for something .

DP – time is running out i think if blockbuster is going to close – grab 4 actors – do some dp/30’s in there – get them to rome around and interview them while they check out dvd’s – should be fun. nobody else is doing this .

as for the weekly bikini girls – thats why g4 / mtv exist…and they do the job pretty well –
did you know that 10/100 actors in the maxim hot 100 2012 have done a dp/30 .

    Sanj my head hurts.

  15. sanj says:

    huh ?

new docs coming to HBO in July . should be good.

Marina Abramović: The Artist Is Present

The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom by Lucy Walker

everybody should really watch Countdown to Zero doc.
    super scary documentary about weapons.

  16. sanj says:

hey DP – i was expecting a triple play with Prometheus dp/30

    – Charlize – Noomi and Michael all in one interview.

you interviewed them before – they kinda know who you are.

i know that Guy did a dp/30 but your hiding that for summer time i guess.

so it must be those evil publicists ? were you out of the area when the actors where around ?

i kinda find it weird that Charlize is everywhere promoting this movie – did you catch her on Colbert ? funny.

so it makes me wonder if Andrew and Emma are going to show up for SP4 …

the bigger the movie in terms of budget = more promotion right ?

is there a Girl in Progress dp/30 coming ? it seems like a good tv movie but it has Eva – who seems super nice ..
but the girl in the movie needs an interview …

is anybody else showing up for Killer Joe – Thomas Haden Church – Gina Gershon = Matthew McConaughey ?

if there’s a big movie with big cast and only half show up aren’t we getting half the story about the movie making process?

i felt the same way when only Sean showed up for American Pie 4 movie … what happened to the rest of the cast ?

Rock of Ages has a really big cast – but i figure nobody will show up for a dp.30 – the entire cast can take the easy way out and do easy tv interviews on ET / Access and the morning / late night shows .

DP – you don’t have to give out names – but do you know
that some actors wanted to do a dp/30 but the movie studio / publicist banned them and the actors were confused as to why ?

  17. sanj says:

    mostly for DP –

the business model for hbo — read all the comments.

basically people want to buy hbo online but hbo says no.

my favorite comment – not mine .

“This debate is merely a symptom of one issue: Subsidizing cable channels we don’t watch. Paying for 500 cable channels make sense in the past because they provide so much value with little cost. Now with the advent of the internet, DVD, and digital content distribution, along with network decay (see tv tropes for what I’m saying), what is the point of subsidizing a bunch of channels I have very interest of watching because I want HBO.

The cable industry is merely trying to preserve their business in the face of reality by forcing you to subsidize mostly crappy programming so you can watch the real stuff. It’s terrible that in order to watch HBO, you have to pay at least $60, of at which $45 will be for subscription television channels that are these days full of reality tv, reruns from programs in the year 2000 and up, and bolwderized movies that are merely advertisements for the uncensored DVD/Blu-ray versions.

The sad truth is that when the cable industry dies, the people owning and controlling the channels will keep the money they earn.

So really, they want you to subsidize garbage as long as possible until the industry as we know it dies.”

  18. sanj says:

why is this reality show on cbs ? actors have to compete with animals now just to get on tv.
somehow this show was too good for animal planet channel.

    Dogs in the City

In Manhattan, Justin Silver is known as the “go-to guy” for all things dog-related. He has a creative and instinctive ability to connect with his canine customers while solving dilemmas for their two-legged masters. In each episode, he meets with clients who present a range of relationship problems, lifestyle changes or domestic issues – from a couple looking to move in together, but she’s terrified of his golden retriever, to a recently divorced couple whose dog is having a rough time adjusting to joint custody. Justin gets as imaginative as necessary to reach a satisfying resolution, often finding that the owners can be a special breed themselves.

  19. tbunny says:

Comcast: hey, we’ll give you the first year at a 30% discount. But yeah, if you move you’re basically going to be out $100 plus for indecipherable installation charges and fees. And then you need a new contract which good luck understanding, because it will never ever ever match the prices quoted to you on the phone. And if you call us you will find there is literally no option on your phone tree for billing assistance. You only get that if you keep going through the tree and cursing out the bloated and armor plated plutocrats who rule you. And oh yes if you do cable only you won’t save any money vs. your goddammned triple play. But we won’t tell you that.

  20. Glamourboy says:

If Sanj makes an interview request and DP doesn’t hear it, does it make a sound?

  21. hcat says:

If cable went ala carte you would still likely be paying the same amount for less channels. The great stuff that you watch is subsidized by the crap others watch and vice versa. AMC is not the highest rated cable channel, A&E and History are, and what do they show? Reality Programs.

Its like a Co-op system. If people choose only the channels they wanted then the subcription base for your favorite channels would fall, the ad revenue would plummet and you would have to make up the difference in the fees the charge you.

Its a little like complaining that your library stocks all these books that you will never check out.

If you don’t want to pay what it costs to get HBO then don’t (and I don’t), just wait for the dvds. But if you have to have it right now pay the damn money, thats the whole friggin point of HBO. When you purchase media you do not pay for quality, you pay for access.

  22. sanj says:

right now DP is missing out on the biggest summer blockbuster movies instead we get 10 dp/30 indie films in a row.

the more money something makes the less chance there will be a dp/30 – cause darn it – its just too popular.

there really should have been 50 actors that should have had dp/30 by now ..

the old actors who’ve been around forever finally get one like Ben Kingsley — Gary Oldman = Mickey Rourke – but then don’t come back .

DP has done so many indie interviews this year that the indie spirit awards should just give DP an award for
    helping hte movie industry.

still don’t know if the dp/30 have expire dates – the movies i’ve seen 2 years ago – big budget / small budget are still have great performances but still no dp/30 .

maybe DP needs a 1-800 number where actors can call up and ask for interview directly.

  23. anghus says:

Rock of Ages is starting to feel like massive tank potential.

    The marketing is downright horrendous

  24. Glamourboy says:

    Sanj,

Didn’t DP (the person) offer you a job helping him with his DPs (the project)? With both of you working together we could get full DP (the abbreviation).

Yet, if I remember correctly, you turned him down.

Be the change that you want, Sanj! Anyone can sit back and fantasize about all the DPs, past/present/future, and I can’t tell you how many days I’ve spent pondering all the possibilities and DP disappointments.

Write DP (the person) and take him up on his offer! Heck, there could have been a DP made during the time it took to read this email. Time is a-wasting!

    Go, Sanj, Go!

  25. sanj says:

    have a quick look

13 Creepy Esquire Russia Covers –

i’m not sure why i’m obsessing about people who haven’t done any dp/30’s before than the ones who have. DP is everywhere in every film festival . how
some actors miss him 100% is confusing…
at least i have like little to no interest in box office numbers .

also the girls tv show on hbo – it’s the fixed up version of what sex and the city should have been.
its like a mini indie movie every week.

  26. Krillian says:

Alec Baldwin’s wig is bad enough, but to have him say “I think I just threw up. In my pants!” in the final trailer?

And yet, I still hold out hope. Looking forward to see Tom Cruise as a rock god.

  27. arisp says:

Enough of Sanj. Dude, take a vacation christ.

  28. sanj says:

    Rock of Ages…has Malin Akerman

watch her old music video “Poison”

before she went into acting – she was actually in a band and before that she was a model .

  29. Yancy Skancy says:

Showing my age, but: sanj should re-purpose a bunch of Red Buttons’ old “Never got a dinner” jokes for a “Never got a DP30” routine.

“Abe Lincoln, who said, ‘A house divided is a condominium,’ never got a DP30…

  30. sanj says:

watched saving hope – medical drama – nbc …

they basically copied a gifted man and grey’s anatomy …

basically there is a ghost running around in a hospital ..

the most interesting part is the entire show has lens flare like fro the star trek movie … it can easily annoy some people . its supposed to make everything look high def .

the thing actors don’t talk about in dp/30 interviews is other interviews they’ve done with other interviwers – there’s a ton of actors out of uk and they got lots of
movie and tv reviewers like that Jonathan Ross guy from the bbc … actors from the uk have to censor themselves and not talk about anybody from their country who do the same things people in the US do .

is Jonathan Ross and DP enemies ?

  31. sanj says:

    time for a new byob…

sci-fi fans – new music video – 71 million views.

David Guetta – Titanium ft. Sia

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRfuAukYTKg

i don’t like this video – but the kid actor Ryan Lee – who’s been in a lot of tv shows and some movies like Super 8 really needs a dp/30 just for this video
    which got 67000 comments .

it takes forever for DP to find actors under 18 to do dp/30’s …took forever for dp/30 with Chloe Moretz
…she should have an automatic dp/30 after Kick Ass .

same thing with Ryan Gosling – teen actor in some bad tv shows but it takes like 5 + years for him to do something
good for DP to find him……

can DP find good actors among all the bad teen shows out there ? look at Dawson’s Creek – they weren’t all teens
when they did the show but Katie Holmes was way more popular than Michelle Williams and now she’s got more awards than Katie but DP didn’t find Michelle while she was on Dawson’s Creek.

Katie is now marriedto Tom Cruise and he probably bans Katie from doing any dp/30’s .

wondering if DP is going to read this .
