Weekend Estimates by Still The World Klady
Jurassic World has become the kind of movie phenom that we only see in America every few years. The conversation about heels has faded and the conversation about “winning” four weekends in a row is the story. The film made less in its 4th weekend than Avatar or Marvel’s The Avengers, but is out ahead of both in total gross after 4 weekends. So only time will tell on those records. The film will pass Titanic‘s domestic gross in the next couple weeks.
Inside Out is still playing strong also, still in position to become Pixar’s #2 domestic grosser of all time and a sure bet to finish no lower than #3.
Openers Terminator: Genisys and Magic Mike XXL are fighting different battles than the two smashes above them on today’s chart. T5 is looking to reboot the franchise and was always going to count heavily in international, though the soft domestic isn’t helpful. And MMXXL, even with a higher budget, is still low budget and even if the drop in domestic is mirrored overseas (they hope for the opposite), the film will be profitable.

Only one Star Wars movie has not won the box office in the year it was released. The bar now for Episode VII has been set very, very high.

No one is discrediting Avengers, but even you should admit that Avengers was a success that was 4 years in the making with the release of Iron Man 2008. And after being promoted in Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Cpt America, as well as decades of fan fueled hype from reading the comics, I don’t think any other movie in film history, has ever benefited from as much pre-release exposure as Avengers 2012. Avengers footprint in popular culture won’t be denied.
Jurassic Park and World never had that type of a footprint. Yes the book was popular, but then JP became an immense hit, and was a cinematic achievement that stands til today. But reboots and re-imaginations are a dime a dozen these days, and the box office wasteland is filled with failed attempts at doing what JW has done. The mere fact that it can even challenge Avengers’ numbers is astounding. No one saw this coming, no one.
What no one also saw coming is how much under domestically, Ultron performed compared to it’s predecessor. It failed to build far less be in the same ballpark. It opened to $16m less on it’s first weekend, which was not bad at all. But then it topped off at $170m less. No one is crying here, but it’s still something to take notice of. Every Marvel sequel has built on it’s audience except it’s flagship.
So quit your whining IO.

Who has? No one I know, or read, or any movie commentator anywhere has said this. In fact, just the opposite, the ones that dislike JW say that it reminds them even more how much they loved JP, and the ones that like JW, are mostly in the camp of “not as good as the original, but it did an adequate job.”

Something ridiculous and amazing is happening at the box office, but even though I fucking think the movie is stupid. I am still fascinated about how this fucking movie is so fucking dominate in ways few films have ever been.

It’s not as much of a phenom as the original JP and certainly not Titanic. But it’s likely going to end up as the 2nd biggest movie by any measurement since the 90s, which is insane enough.
#3 all-time worldwide is now more assured than #3 all-time domestically. It’s almost certainly Universal’s most profitable film now…and will likely be the 3rd most profitable film ever made from a pure BO standpoint. Interesting Uni hasn’t announced that yet. Still curious about the actual budget.

Jurassic Park (which I saw 4 times in the theatre on its initial release), is ALSO a Stupid Dinosaur Movie. Or perhaps you forgot those dumb kids and the “Dino DNA” cartoon.
Having said that, while I’m not a big fan of Titanic either, Jurassic World passing its domestic total is depressing. No way it catches Avatar, though, and The Force Awakens is going to be a juggernaut due to repeat business. Like, who’s going to see that film only once?

I think we are in for a Superman Returns to Man of Steel correction where they steer it in the opposite direction and simply make it a different kind of bad. It will open big, December record will fall easy, but it won’t have Avatars or titanic a legs and the certainly wont recapture the magic of the original.

Revenge of the Sith, third in a trilogy where everyone (supposedly) hated the first two films, made just under $400 million, and you’re telling me that the return of the classic characters will have trouble reaching $600m with a December release?

I’m with lazarus, I think you’re all waaaaaaay underestimating Star Wars. The trailer alone sent reams of people into orgasm.
I remember the “Titanic Wrecking Crew” t-shirts from the age of Phantom Menace so I am going with cautious optimism. Of course it is going to do insane business but there are a lot of variables to getting to the top of the top. Anecdotally,it seems like the breakouts are more often something you don’t see coming. Jurassic World was always going to make money but no one saw THAT coming. Same with Avengers, Dark Knight, Avatar, and yes Titanic. So yes it might hit the ultimate heights, or it might just be a massive and profitable blockbuster. As William Goldman said: Nobody knows nothing.
People saw Avengers and Dark Knight coming. Both had cultural builds. Titanic (and Avatar) were harder to predict. I remember David predicting after he saw Avatar that it was going to be huge and one people will go and see again and again.
It’s a weird thing to tell you to go watch, but check out the documentary on the Phantom Menace DVD. Lucas Frank Oz talk on set after filming Yoda scenes. On Titanic, Lucas says you can never predict anything like that. It’s around the 51 minute mark.

I think the only movie in history that people en masse were predicting $500m or more was Avengers AoU. To a lesser extent Avenegers.
As for Star Wars, I think $500m would be a completely sane prediction, and probably a basement figure. Fans want this. The trailer inspired more emotion and fondness that JW and I see it actually benefiting from this insane nostalgia that JW has tapped into.
I think Christmas is also the perfect time. That feel good stuff will play big time over the holiday season and the legs will be insane. By default it’s the family movie of the season. I honestly think it will challenge JW and Titanic.

Amblin, not immediately, about a decade and a half down the line someone remakes the original forty year old movie about the relentless pursuit of an everyday woman by an unstoppable killing machine. It’s not the premise that has gotten old but the execution, adding extra terminators and twisting the storyline, All I am saying is that I wouldn’t mind if they finally gave up patching on sequels letting it lie dormant and revisiting it in a generation like King Kong, planet of the Apes or the Fly.
More Terminstor films seems redundant. They don’t have the appeal or the wide range of options like Planet of the Apes, King Kong, etc. They are relegated to 80s action movie relics, like Robocop, Predator, Aliens, etc. Even though T2 came out in ’91, it was still part of that action movie era. Fury Road is one of those few movies where is now ranks as the top of the franchise, which isn’t that difficult considering the Mad Max films were never blockbusters to begin with.
They should have gone with the R Rating. Have a kickass chase flick, and forget about the same old trying to prevent the same doomsday shit again and again.
It actually made Terminator Salvation look good by comparison because at least they attempted to show something different.

The movie Avatar? It just ruined Sony and other businesses, that got caught up in that 3D bullshit. It made Tim Burton a lot richer though, so that’s something.

the direction of JW is the very definition of pedestrian/generic/mediocre; terribly written (and apparently trevarow is largely responsible for the final draft), not an iota of out-of-the-box creativity or ingenuity or vision on display, nor a single theme explored beyond the cursory, brief and perfunctory – just shallow and trite and rather nasty all around. so of course he’ll direct more big budget stuff (instead of people who could actually do something with flair and imagination on such a budget)
Not arguing your opinion about JW, just that the way the ending of Safety Not Guaranteed showed he knew how to shoot a special effects-heavy movie, and he did with JW. Not talking about the quality of the script, but people clearly are finding the film entertaining if not high art, which will never trump a film being entertaining when a movie is made for the masses. Don’t exactly see what you mean by pedestrian direction. Definitely better than a lot of Spielberg’s shallower fare like Lost Word, or War of the Worlds, for that matter, so I see no reason anyone else would have made JW better than what it is without a script rewrite, which even still is only problematic and boring mainly by dumb melodrama of a divorce that serves the basis of those brothers’ interaction. The running time of just over 2 hours was apt, in the age of bloated summer movies that run almost 3 hours now, I can see why this one is doing so well.
Bryce Dallas Howard is the one responsible for the character wearing high heels. How is that sexist when a female made the choice. As for the character she repeatedly saves Pratt’s life and acts in heroic ways. You just don’ like the director for whatever weird reason.
Oh yeah the greatest movie of all time, Fury Road, showed a blood drained, chained man kick Furisosa’s ass in a one on one fight. Nothing sexist about that.

He did a passable B-grade Spielberg impression on Jurassic World, which I’ll take any day over the third rate Michael Bay impressions that otherwise clog up the multiplex. People bitch and moan about the dumbing down of blockbuster filmmaking, and then when someone delivers a pretty classically directed blockbuster, they shit all over it. Can’t please anyone.

Sure but context is what’s missing. Someone will say “Hey, compared to the shit sandwiches Hollywood has been feeding us, JW almost tasted like peanut butter.” A comment along these lines is followed by “omg if you think JW is the Raging Bull of the mid-decade that’s the dumbest stupidest thing ever in the history of high heels!”
Beyond that, what is it we expect? These movies are making money hand over fist. They cost money hand over fist. Of course Hollywood will keep serving the same meal in the same way. And yeah, movie dorks like us can boycott or whatever but it won’t matter. The masses and their kids control summer blockbuster filmmaking. What we want counts for shit.
Hcat – it is something we can all agree on, and I absolutely respect wanting a higher standard, but expecting – or even hoping for – a Jaws level accomplishment from every blockbuster that comes along – like a 4th Jurassic Park movie – just seems misguided to the point of masochism. We’re 35 years into the era of sequel domination, and there’s a pretty clear trend line toward diminishing returns. Every so often you get a Mad Max Fury Road, an Empire Strikes Back, a Terminator 2, but most of the time I feel happy if I get a solid crowd pleaser like Jaws 2 or Jurassic World.

I’m thinking a lot of us are looking at Jurassic Park through rosy glasses. A lot of paint-by-numbers there too. Maybe George Lucas helping out with the editing after Spielberg left to work on Schindler’s List had something to do with it.
I think Jurassic World does a very competent job of presenting the same storyline for our kids. As for any problems with the T Rex-be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.
I have no idea why anyone would obsess over who’s directing a Star Wars or Marvel movie anyway. Disney gives virtually zero creative freedom because there’s too much money at stake. You’re going to get the same movie no matter who’s behind the camera.
