Weekend Estimates by Still The World Klady

Weekend Estimates 2015-07-05 at 8.56.22 AM

Jurassic World has become the kind of movie phenom that we only see in America every few years. The conversation about heels has faded and the conversation about “winning” four weekends in a row is the story.  The film made less in its 4th weekend than Avatar or Marvel’s The Avengers, but is out ahead of both in total gross after 4 weekends. So only time will tell on those records. The film will pass Titanic‘s domestic gross in the next couple weeks.

Inside Out is still playing strong also, still in position to become Pixar’s #2 domestic grosser of all time and a sure bet to finish no lower than #3.

Openers Terminator: Genisys and Magic Mike XXL are fighting different battles than the two smashes above them on today’s chart. T5 is looking to reboot the franchise and was always going to count heavily in international, though the soft domestic isn’t helpful. And MMXXL, even with a higher budget, is still low budget and even if the drop in domestic is mirrored overseas (they hope for the opposite), the film will be profitable.

  1. movieman says:

    Hmmmm.
B.O. Mojo has “Jurassic” at $43.8-million for the weekend–and with the same $558 domestic cume.

  2. Bulldog68 says:

Looks like they may have posted JW’s 5 day number in error Movieman.

  3. JS Partisan says:

    So, let’s get this straight:

SDM is more of a phenom than:

    Avengers.
    The Dark Knight.
    Titanic.
    The original Jurassic Park.

WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?

Apparently, those shitty Transformers movie, have gotten kids into shitty CGI spectacles! Congratulation, Michael Bay! You’ve SUCCEEDED! OPEN BUTTON DOWN SHIRTS FOR ALL OF US!

  4. Tracker Backer says:

You are the only person calling it “SDM.” Give it up.

  5. JS Partisan says:

It’s a STUPID DINOSAUR MOVIE! It’s like people forgot the original Jurassic Park existed, which is funny. SEEING HOW THEY RE-RELEASED IT FUCKING TWO YEARS AGO IN 3D, AND IT MADE SOME FUCKING MONEY!

Seriously Tracky, the fact that you lack the ability to grasp how utterly fucking ridiculous this is. Demonstrates you’ve given up on trying to figure out what makes the fucking American movie audiences tick.

Also, I will always refer to it, as STUPID DINOSAUR MOVIE, because there is already an awesome dinosaur movie. It came out in 1993 and unlike this STUPID PIECE OF SHIT. IT’S STILL A FUCKING AWESOME MOVIE!

Give it up? Could you give up posting here, and maybe go bug Scott Mendelson?

  6. Matt P. says:

Only one Star Wars movie has not won the box office in the year it was released. The bar now for Episode VII has been set very, very high.

  7. Bulldog68 says:

Well I guess it’s ok to start calling JS IO again.

How old are you IO, 5?

No one is discrediting Avengers, but even you should admit that Avengers was a success that was 4 years in the making with the release of Iron Man 2008. And after being promoted in Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Cpt America, as well as decades of fan fueled hype from reading the comics, I don’t think any other movie in film history, has ever benefited from as much pre-release exposure as Avengers 2012. Avengers footprint in popular culture won’t be denied.

Jurassic Park and World never had that type of a footprint. Yes the book was popular, but then JP became an immense hit, and was a cinematic achievement that stands til today. But reboots and re-imaginations are a dime a dozen these days, and the box office wasteland is filled with failed attempts at doing what JW has done. The mere fact that it can even challenge Avengers’ numbers is astounding. No one saw this coming, no one.

What no one also saw coming is how much under domestically, Ultron performed compared to it’s predecessor. It failed to build far less be in the same ballpark. It opened to $16m less on it’s first weekend, which was not bad at all. But then it topped off at $170m less. No one is crying here, but it’s still something to take notice of. Every Marvel sequel has built on it’s audience except it’s flagship.

    So quit your whining IO.

  8. Bulldog68 says:

” It’s like people forgot the original Jurassic Park existed.”

Who has? No one I know, or read, or any movie commentator anywhere has said this. In fact, just the opposite, the ones that dislike JW say that it reminds them even more how much they loved JP, and the ones that like JW, are mostly in the camp of “not as good as the original, but it did an adequate job.”

You live in your world man.

  9. JS Partisan says:

Bullfrog (OH! I CHANGED YOUR NAME! HOW CLEVER AM I? OH! OH!), why do you guys think that anyone needs your approval for anything? Seriously? You aren’t even GRASPING the point, that I am making. You know? The one about this fucking phenom coming out of NOWHERE, and grossing more than Avengers, Titanic, and The Dark Knight.

This has nothing to do with AGE OF ULTRON (A movie that I love, but a movie that needed, desperately, for someone else to oversee it! It has everything to do with this ridiculous fucking movie, be a phenom we haven’t seen since the original Avatar, Titanic, and the Avengers. That’s just staggering, but please KEEP ON WITH YOUR STUPID FUCKING ENTRENCHED POSITIONS!

Something ridiculous and amazing is happening at the box office, but even though I fucking think the movie is stupid. I am still fascinated about how this fucking movie is so fucking dominate in ways few films have ever been.

Matt, I am not sure The Force Awakens is going to do it now, because do we really live in a world where you can appease Gen Xers with practical FXs, and have that movie make 2bn from everybody else?

  10. EtGuild2 says:

It’s not as much of a phenom as the original JP and certainly not Titanic. But it’s likely going to end up as the 2nd biggest movie by any measurement since the 90s, which is insane enough.

#3 all-time worldwide is now more assured than #3 all-time domestically. It’s almost certainly Universal’s most profitable film now…and will likely be the 3rd most profitable film ever made from a pure BO standpoint. Interesting Uni hasn’t announced that yet. Still curious about the actual budget.

    DP…AVATAR is not in reach.

  11. Bulldog68 says:

“It has everything to do with this ridiculous fucking movie, be a phenom we haven’t seen since the original Avatar, Titanic, and the Avengers.”

Stop the presses..IO admits JW is a phenom. There is hope for mankind yet.

  12. Big G says:

Guess I’m slow on the uptake but what is IO?

  13. Bulldog68 says:

IO is JS Partisan’s former handle.

  14. Big G says:

    Ah thanks.

  15. brack says:

JW would have to make very small drops in the next few weekends to outgross Avatar. That isn’t really happening, so I think it will end up at #2 domestically.

  16. Bulldog68 says:

Not seeing where DP said it would reach Avatar. He said Titanic.

  17. EtGuild2 says:

He said time will tell on those records. I think it’s already clear time has told on AVATAR. It would have needed some -30% weekends early on.

  18. Jerryishere says:

    Where does SWTFA land?

phantom menace made what? 450m or so in ’99… If TFA equals that with inflation — is it at 600m?

Will it play for kids and families like phantom did? Will Christmas release help or hurt?

If JW hits 625 or so, hard to imagine it not being #1 for year… But I suppose only time will tell.

  19. John says:

I seriously doubt Star Wars won’t win the year. Christmas movies have legs like nobodies business and given the response the trailer had, EVERYONE will also be there opening weekend.

  20. JS Partisan says:

December movies do indeed have legs. The thing of it is: if the spoilers for TFA are anywhere close to being true. It’s hard to see if that’s the kind of movie, that will get repeat viewings. Let alone a big word of mouth. If the spoilers about the ending are true? Oy vey.

That aside. Yes, that was my handle TEN YEARS AGO! LET IT FUCKING GO! Good fucking lord, but SDM is a phenom. It’s the must fucking confusing phenom possibly ever.

  21. Jerryishere says:

    500 million for TFA by 1/3? Over/under?

  22. DavidPoland says:

Yeah… have never said Avatar numbers are in danger in any way.

  23. JS Partisan says:

It should hit 550 domestic, and 1.5bn international. International on a Star Wars movie, should be fucking ridiculous.

  24. lazarus says:

I’m not around here as much as I used to be, and forgot how ridiculously annoying IO is.

Jurassic Park (which I saw 4 times in the theatre on its initial release), is ALSO a Stupid Dinosaur Movie. Or perhaps you forgot those dumb kids and the “Dino DNA” cartoon.

Having said that, while I’m not a big fan of Titanic either, Jurassic World passing its domestic total is depressing. No way it catches Avatar, though, and The Force Awakens is going to be a juggernaut due to repeat business. Like, who’s going to see that film only once?

  25. JS Partisan says:

Jurassic Park isn’t as SEXIST OR MEAN! I’d take that stupid cartoon any day of the week, over constant shots of a lady in heels.

  26. brack says:

I dunno, making Laura Dern look 10 years older in those mom khakis and unflattering haircut was pretty mean. 😉

  27. JS Partisan says:

    Okay. That was fucking funny.

  28. Amblinman says:

“Jurassic Park isn’t as SEXIST OR MEAN! I’d take that stupid cartoon any day of the week, over constant shots of a lady in heels.”

Verses tight black leather and requiring her to be saved by all the better superheroes…I mean “characters!”

  29. JS Partisan says:

Yeah. Nat is the co-lead in almost every movie she has been in sans Iron Man 2, and it would not have sucked if she had third billing. Please, man, you know that’s bullshit. You know how hard that is bullshit? The millions of people who want her merch, and who ripped Joss apart for giving her a shit storyline. Seriously, that’s bullshit, you know it’s bullshit, but you are the one guy who doesn’t like the Marvel movies. Too bad for fucking you. I guess you will have to pay more money to Marvel on the 17th. HAW HAW!

  30. Amblinman says:

So you mean despite her overwhelming popularity with fans and constant top billing in Marvel films it still sucked that Whedon reduced her to a helpless Disney Princess in AOU? That’s terrible. 🙁

  31. Tracker Backer says:

    “Who is Nat?”

    Natasha Romanoff = Black Widow

  32. Hcat says:

Natasha is the Black Widow, you forget that IO is on a first name basis with these fictional people. You may recall he was mistified that none of the old men around here knew GI Joe’s real name even though there was legions of people chomping at the bit for that story to be brought to the screen.

  33. Hcat says:

I also doubt Star Wars will knock this off. I think we are in for a Superman Returns to Man of Steel correction where they steer it in the opposite direction and simply make it a different kind of bad. It will open big, December record will fall easy, but it won’t have Avatars or titanic a legs and the certainly wont recapture the magic of the original.

  34. Monco says:

No way Star Wars beats this domestic gross. That movie is going to disappoint big time.

  35. lazarus says:

Revenge of the Sith, third in a trilogy where everyone (supposedly) hated the first two films, made just under $400 million, and you’re telling me that the return of the classic characters will have trouble reaching $600m with a December release?

    PUH-LEASE.

I’m not an Abrams fan by any stretch, so I’m not going to speak about the likelihood of the film being actually great. But you are in for a rude awakening if you think this is going to top off only at $500m.

  36. Chucky says:

Will you all turn off caps lock and clean up your potty mouth? There IS such a thing as Internet filters.

  37. amblinman says:

I’m with lazarus, I think you’re all waaaaaaay underestimating Star Wars. The trailer alone sent reams of people into orgasm.

  38. Gen says:

I remember the “Titanic Wrecking Crew” t-shirts from the age of Phantom Menace so I am going with cautious optimism. Of course it is going to do insane business but there are a lot of variables to getting to the top of the top. Anecdotally,it seems like the breakouts are more often something you don’t see coming. Jurassic World was always going to make money but no one saw THAT coming. Same with Avengers, Dark Knight, Avatar, and yes Titanic. So yes it might hit the ultimate heights, or it might just be a massive and profitable blockbuster. As William Goldman said: Nobody knows nothing.

  39. Matt P. says:

People saw Avengers and Dark Knight coming. Both had cultural builds. Titanic (and Avatar) were harder to predict. I remember David predicting after he saw Avatar that it was going to be huge and one people will go and see again and again.

It’s a weird thing to tell you to go watch, but check out the documentary on the Phantom Menace DVD. Lucas Frank Oz talk on set after filming Yoda scenes. On Titanic, Lucas says you can never predict anything like that. It’s around the 51 minute mark.

He actually says, “We’re never going to be Titanic. Nobody can.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=da8s9m4zEpo

  40. Gen says:

““We’re never going to be Titanic. Nobody can.”…except James Cameron? I have seen that clip, it’s got such an odd vibe. I can’t even explain it. His whole attitude in that documentary seems begrudging. Phantom Menace as a whole is bafflingly out of touch.

People saw Avengers and Dark Knight coming in so much as they would be huge but were there legitimate predictions (as in not fanboy hyperbole that happened to be right this time) for $600 and $500 million? That I don’t recall at all.

  41. Bulldog68 says:

I think the only movie in history that people en masse were predicting $500m or more was Avengers AoU. To a lesser extent Avenegers.

As for Star Wars, I think $500m would be a completely sane prediction, and probably a basement figure. Fans want this. The trailer inspired more emotion and fondness that JW and I see it actually benefiting from this insane nostalgia that JW has tapped into.

I think Christmas is also the perfect time. That feel good stuff will play big time over the holiday season and the legs will be insane. By default it’s the family movie of the season. I honestly think it will challenge JW and Titanic.

  42. JS Partisan says:

Oh look everybody! It’s Hcat! He’s like Hallick. If Hallick sucked. Yeah, if you folks have no idea the name of the Avengers by now, then Marvel really needs to make another 10bn. Steve, Tony, Clint, Bruce, Wanda, Vision, Nat, Rhodey, and Sam. It’s not too hard to pay attention… for most people.

Gen, probably not, but those we had an idea. JW has just come out of the fucking ether like Avatar, and will probably return to it just as quick. Much like with Avatar. It’s what the sequels do, that will tell the tale, because who knows if this shit carries over? It sure as shit didn’t with the Avengers, or the movie didn’t help it to carry over.

  43. Doug R says:

Don’t forget, I was the only one who saw The Simpsons Movie making big money 😉

  44. EtGuild2 says:

INSIDE OUT was number 1…nothing is ever going to top that BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING record it seems…

  45. Hcat says:

Well apparently congrats are in order to Hallick for not sucking, too bad the same cant seem to be said for Terminator. So is this the end of this strand of Arnold terms and someone picks up the rights and starts from scratch? Like the Apes movies it is such a simplistically wonderful premise I would love to see it revisited sometime in the future when someone wants to do it for a reason other than a cash grab.

  46. JS Partisan says:

Wow. Good going Inside Out for sticking around! WOOO!!!!

HC, you are right on the money with the above, and it’s fucking frustrating Paramount gave away the twist in marketing. Sure. It’s a shit twist, but they could have maybe figured a way to sell the movie, without posters that augmented Emilia Clarke’s body.

Paramount having the rights is stupid. Give them to Universal. They seem to be a role, and they could always use another fucking franchise.

  47. Bulldog68 says:

Wished Inside Out was #2 just to break Greek Wedding’s record. I hate that fucking movie.

JW was also taken down another peg as after actuals were released it dropped below Ultron in worldwide numbers.

    It’s a failure I tell you, I complete failure.

  48. JS Partisan says:

Age of Ultron is going down, and we all know it.

BUT YOU HATE “MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING?” WHAT THE FUCK, MAN? THAT MOVIE IS… fucking wonderful.

    That’s for Chucky.

  49. Amblinman says:

Hcat, Really? You want to see another Terminator reboot? This story needs to be told again? It ended with Cameron’s T2. How many times do audiences have to explain they’re satisfied with that story having been told, the way it was told?

JS, no, most people don’t know or care what the Avengers real names are. “Nat” is not a thing (stop trying to make fetch happen!)

It’s funny that a few weeks ago you insisted Avatar had zero
Impact culturally when just about no one gives a fuck about AOU, and that was just a couple of months ago.

  50. Hcat says:

Amblin, not immediately, about a decade and a half down the line someone remakes the original forty year old movie about the relentless pursuit of an everyday woman by an unstoppable killing machine. It’s not the premise that has gotten old but the execution, adding extra terminators and twisting the storyline, All I am saying is that I wouldn’t mind if they finally gave up patching on sequels letting it lie dormant and revisiting it in a generation like King Kong, planet of the Apes or the Fly.

  51. brack says:

More Terminstor films seems redundant. They don’t have the appeal or the wide range of options like Planet of the Apes, King Kong, etc. They are relegated to 80s action movie relics, like Robocop, Predator, Aliens, etc. Even though T2 came out in ’91, it was still part of that action movie era. Fury Road is one of those few movies where is now ranks as the top of the franchise, which isn’t that difficult considering the Mad Max films were never blockbusters to begin with.

  52. Bulldog68 says:

They should have gone with the R Rating. Have a kickass chase flick, and forget about the same old trying to prevent the same doomsday shit again and again.

It actually made Terminator Salvation look good by comparison because at least they attempted to show something different.

This one just looked like a cheap knockoff of the original. Shame.

  53. Steve D. says:

    “brack says:
    July 7, 2015 at 7:15 am
More Terminstor films seems redundant. They don’t have the appeal or the wide range of options like Planet of the Apes, King Kong, etc.”

Um, are you sure about that? Time travel and AI versus monkeys… Hmm…

They should make Terminator vs. Timecop and have Van Damme try to stop Arnie from murdering famous leaders/scientists in different historical eras.

  54. JS Partisan says:

Man, your fucking reality isn’t THE REALITY. It’s funny, because I keep hearing people telling me how much they love Age of Ultron. I am sorry you live in a world where the biggest movie franchise ever, does nothing for you. If you don’t get that people refer to her as Nat, then let’s remember your love of a vicious piece of shit dinosaur movie. Good for you. Good for you.

Also, there is only one thing in this world named AVATAR, and it has an INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF FUCKING IMPACT! It features Aang and Korra though, and you probably don’t know who they are either! KORSAMI FOREVER!

The movie Avatar? It just ruined Sony and other businesses, that got caught up in that 3D bullshit. It made Tim Burton a lot richer though, so that’s something.

  55. Hcat says:

Sony ruined itself trying to be Warner’s. plus the smurfs, that cinematic crime can not go unnoticed by Karma.

As for limitations, isn’t Kong pretty limited and theta why it only comes around every so often? As for Steve’s suggestion- no no no no no no no. If you are merging franchises or having multiple terminators I’m out. I just need a relentless pursuit, a sci-fi Fugitive or It Follows, hell you can even cut out the nuclear war and just have the machine take over gradually until there is a resistance, that will play to our basic fear of machines.

  56. Bulldog68 says:

“If you don’t get that people refer to her as Nat”

All that marketing material to brand her as Black Widow just gone to waste.

FWIW, I know a lot of movie people and comic fans too, and not one of them have referred to her as Nat. So your shit is completely anecdotal.

As for the others, in circles of regular conversation where people talk and want to be “understood” in 160 characters or more, they refer to them as Ironman, Hulk, Captain America and Thor.

  57. Stella's Boy says:

    Who is Black Widow?

“My life only has meaning if The Avengers movies are perceived as meaningful and important. Also your taste in movies is lame.” – Saddest Person Ever

  58. Hcat says:

The only catsuited Avenger that ever mattered was Emma Peel.

  59. amblinman says:

“Man, your fucking reality isn’t THE REALITY. Good for you.”

Translation: The people in my circle that agree with me, well they agree with me.

No, no one save you and those people in your circle who agree with you refer to Black Widow as “Nat”. In fact, I’d be willing to bet most of the people who have gone to Avengers movies don’t know either name. They just say “Man, it’s too bad Scarlet Johanssen’s character was reduced to a damsel in distress!”

I didn’t love Jurassic World, but I do love that it’s dropping a Stupid Dinosaur Movie Turd on top of the GREATEST FILM FRANCHISE OF ALL TIME EVER!!!!

  60. leahnz says:

“Will you all turn off caps lock and clean up your potty mouth? There IS such a thing as Internet filters.”

haha apart from just owning the award for ‘most consistent and repetitive’ commentary (don’t go changin’ chuckles), clearly i don’t understand internet filters – isn’t the filter something to be activated by users/readers to filter out content deemed too foul and unsuitable for delicate user sensibilities, not the other way around?…

anywhoo, i get that it’s a ‘dump on Age of ultron’ thread but really, the suggestion that the character of Nat (there you go JF, kickin’ homegirl nat) Romanov/black W is as poorly, sexistly and insipidly written and developed and portrayed a character as clair in JW (who trevarow claims he envisioned as a ‘kickass female character’ hahahaha what a dimbulb tool, yes please direct many more incredibly inane flicks with your three thumbs) is simply laughable. i wouldn’t like to mount some elaborate defence of BW – who at times is poorly written, cliché and limited as a member of the oft-underwritten ‘sexual class’ by a male screenwriter – but BW is ellenfuckingripley compared to the astonishingly inane way clair is treated and portrayed in JW

  61. brack says:

Safety Not Guaranteed is a great little flick. Can see why Trevarow was picked to direct JW with that movie’s ending alone.

  62. leahnz says:

good grief how silly, yeah totally easy to see why he was picked to direct JW after directing one perfectly fine overpraised tiny indie, makes perfect sense (NOT)
the direction of JW is the very definition of pedestrian/generic/mediocre; terribly written (and apparently trevarow is largely responsible for the final draft), not an iota of out-of-the-box creativity or ingenuity or vision on display, nor a single theme explored beyond the cursory, brief and perfunctory – just shallow and trite and rather nasty all around. so of course he’ll direct more big budget stuff (instead of people who could actually do something with flair and imagination on such a budget)

  63. brack says:

Not arguing your opinion about JW, just that the way the ending of Safety Not Guaranteed showed he knew how to shoot a special effects-heavy movie, and he did with JW. Not talking about the quality of the script, but people clearly are finding the film entertaining if not high art, which will never trump a film being entertaining when a movie is made for the masses. Don’t exactly see what you mean by pedestrian direction. Definitely better than a lot of Spielberg’s shallower fare like Lost Word, or War of the Worlds, for that matter, so I see no reason anyone else would have made JW better than what it is without a script rewrite, which even still is only problematic and boring mainly by dumb melodrama of a divorce that serves the basis of those brothers’ interaction. The running time of just over 2 hours was apt, in the age of bloated summer movies that run almost 3 hours now, I can see why this one is doing so well.

  64. Monco says:

Bryce Dallas Howard is the one responsible for the character wearing high heels. How is that sexist when a female made the choice. As for the character she repeatedly saves Pratt’s life and acts in heroic ways. You just don’ like the director for whatever weird reason.

Oh yeah the greatest movie of all time, Fury Road, showed a blood drained, chained man kick Furisosa’s ass in a one on one fight. Nothing sexist about that.

  65. Smith says:

Some of the folks here are going to be in full “John Cassavetes in The Fury” territory if the director rumor for Star Wars Episode IX is correct.

I really don’t get the complaints about Trevorrow. He did a passable B-grade Spielberg impression on Jurassic World, which I’ll take any day over the third rate Michael Bay impressions that otherwise clog up the multiplex. People bitch and moan about the dumbing down of blockbuster filmmaking, and then when someone delivers a pretty classically directed blockbuster, they shit all over it. Can’t please anyone.

  66. Amblinman says:

Smith, it’s because it’s the Internet and people have an inflated sense of “ownership” when it comes to movies. Whining about modern day blockbuster filmmaking is only a little worse than modern day blockbuster filmmaking.

  67. Hcat says:

Granted but hiring a guy that delivered a’passable’ blockbuster to direct another guaranteed blockbuster reeks of lazy thinking. If it is Leah that you are hinting at regarding some people on this blog……what she has been railing against is the cookie cutter widget approach to filmmaking. That we are getting xeroxs instead of clear originals. Not that she needs anyone to state her position but isn’t this something we can all agree on. That we would rather someone makes Jaws and not Jaws 2

  68. PcChongor says:

Fuck it, at this point I’d even take “Jaws 2” over the god awful “Sharknados” we’re being inundated with.

  69. Amblinman says:

“That we are getting xeroxs instead of clear originals. Not that she needs anyone to state her position but isn’t this something we can all agree on.”

Sure but context is what’s missing. Someone will say “Hey, compared to the shit sandwiches Hollywood has been feeding us, JW almost tasted like peanut butter.” A comment along these lines is followed by “omg if you think JW is the Raging Bull of the mid-decade that’s the dumbest stupidest thing ever in the history of high heels!”

Beyond that, what is it we expect? These movies are making money hand over fist. They cost money hand over fist. Of course Hollywood will keep serving the same meal in the same way. And yeah, movie dorks like us can boycott or whatever but it won’t matter. The masses and their kids control summer blockbuster filmmaking. What we want counts for shit.

  70. Smith says:

Hcat – it is something we can all agree on, and I absolutely respect wanting a higher standard, but expecting – or even hoping for – a Jaws level accomplishment from every blockbuster that comes along – like a 4th Jurassic Park movie – just seems misguided to the point of masochism. We’re 35 years into the era of sequel domination, and there’s a pretty clear trend line toward diminishing returns. Every so often you get a Mad Max Fury Road, an Empire Strikes Back, a Terminator 2, but most of the time I feel happy if I get a solid crowd pleaser like Jaws 2 or Jurassic World.

Re: Trevorrow, I guess I should clarify – I thought he did a good job on Jurassic World, and while him directing a Star Wars movie doesn’t light my world on fire, I’m sure he’ll do a good job there too. A “passable B-grade Spielberg impression” is intended as a compliment, though I realize it probably doesn’t come off that way.

  71. Doug R says:

I’m thinking a lot of us are looking at Jurassic Park through rosy glasses. A lot of paint-by-numbers there too. Maybe George Lucas helping out with the editing after Spielberg left to work on Schindler’s List had something to do with it.
I think Jurassic World does a very competent job of presenting the same storyline for our kids. As for any problems with the T Rex-be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

  72. Amblinman says:

I have no idea why anyone would obsess over who’s directing a Star Wars or Marvel movie anyway. Disney gives virtually zero creative freedom because there’s too much money at stake. You’re going to get the same movie no matter who’s behind the camera.
