Just saw “Transit,” and oh my! (Yes, that exclamation is both positive *and* negative.)
I believe I’ll be on team “Them” vs Us this week.
Laughably undercooked, full of holes, lazily symbolic, and a twist ending that is unnecessary and undoes all the mental gymnastics you had to go through to have the thing make sense BEFORE it comes. Huh?
Love JP but Keanu was easily the most original and satisfying feature he’s made. No one at the Academy can explain how a Skeleton Key scene-by-scene lift with black people won Original Screenplay.
Yes that is literally all Get Out is, a scene-by-scene remake of The Skeleton Key with black people. I never read that take before. So fascinating.
I saw Glass at a budget theater. Didn’t even get $1 worth of entertainment. One of the worst studio movies I’ve seen in a long time. Aesthetically it’s terrible. Ugly to look at and hate all the Go Pro closeups. Story is insanely dull and also over-explains everything. “Let me tell you for the 57th time how this is just like comic book.” Willis is barely awake. It’s way too long. Ending is a bore. I really didn’t like anything about it. I can’t imagine liking Unbreakable and Split and being satisfied with Glass. Guess that’s why it underperformed so badly.
SB, I hope that was sarcasm. Get Out was brilliant, and even if it resembles Skeleton Key (haven’t seen it so can’t say for sure), the so-called addition of black people by Jordan Peele was completely brilliant and thematically integrated and is a far cry from just inserting people who happen to be black.
Maybe US isn’t as good, but coming from someone who can’t see the merits of Get Out, there’s no credibility.

There’s one aspect of The Skeleton Key that has a similarity with Get Out, but Get Out reverses the racial dynamic of it (black ‘spirits’ possessing white bodies). I wouldn’t call Get Out a rip-off of it by any means, even if Peele happened to get some inspiration from it (and I don’t know if he did or didn’t).
What is the deal with Cruel Intentions being re-released in theaters? I didn’t know it was such a cultural milestone to warrant a 20th Anniversary release.
Also, I caught the Fandango preview of SHAZAM! It was alot of fun, but more serious than the trailers led on. It definitely earned its PG-13 as there’s some scenes that might scare children.
Amazing to see how Jordan Peele has transitioned into the master of the thinking man’s horror. Like Rod Serling and Hitchcock combined. And the fact that they’re hits and awards worthy too…wow.
Pete, I liked Cruel Intentions when it came out. It receded from view, but I remember at the time it was part of the wave of 1999’s great films. Maybe they’re going to re-release a bunch of other 1999 films? There’s a lot I would actually pay to go see.
Jordan Peele’s ascent makes me wonder when, anyone, will realize Keegan-Michael Key is a hell of an acting talent? Seriously. The dude has cops, but he’s stuck schilling fucking mortgages. It’s ridiculous to me, that that level of talent is just being squandered. It just comes across rather hinky, that this very fruitful partnership is only launching one of them. Sure. One of them seems to get horror in ways no one else has, but the other one can fucking act. LET ME THE MAN ACT, HOLLYWOOD!
Captain Marvel is going to be a billion dollar movie.
I like Keegan-Michael Key’s acting, but I’m not sure he’s transitioned into a serious actor the way Melissa McCarthy and Krasinski and others have. He’s certainly tried, but my guess is that he’s still figuring who he is post-K&P. Some people just take longer than others. He’ll get there.
Key is a fine actor, seems to be picking under the radar films and series for now, I would suppose that would be by choice? Following his bliss and all that.
Haven’t seen Us yet, it will likely be awhile, but 70 million opening, sold on nothing but Peele’s name and atmosphere. Well done.
JS, mostly agree on Key with one caveat: dude has too much of a tendency to go JIM CARREY when doing comedy, and he doesn’t need it.
I watched Dragged Across Concrete. I’m a big Zahler and Cinestate fan. It’s definitely way too long, Gibson’s performance didn’t do much for me, and I’ve got a problem with some of its politics, but I don’t think the movie in any way condones or tries to get you to sympathize with the two leads. They are dinosaurs who see themselves as victims while refusing to acknowledge the possibility that they are the problem. Feels like a pretty timely movie. I like Vaughn’s performance a lot along with that of Tory Kittles. It’s pretty slow but picks up in the home stretch and is quite tense. Since it’s Zahler there are also moments of shocking violence and it can be pretty mean. It’s definitely stuck with me since I watched it a few days ago.
How’d you see it, is it in release yet?
