Hopefully, Solo turns the SW spigot back on for people, because it looks fun. SW, could use some fun, but we will know more tomorrow.

  2. Amblinman says:

Cloverfield tonight? NETFLIX I COULD KISS YOU!!

  3. Night Owl says:

Cloverfield drop was very cool and sure I want to say “wow, game changer!” buuuuuuut the pessimist in me just sees Paramount more than willing now to take their intended theatrical releases and drop them to streaming (this and Annihilation in most of the world). No skin off my back as a consumer…but as someone who loves the cinema experience this concerns me. Less and less original content on the big screen.

Eh to Solo. I expected it to look good visually (although a bit too wannabe Blade Runner in spots?) Let’s see what the full trailer brings. Curious as to why the trailer for this supposed humourous adventure had the same tone as the “on the brink last chance for the good guys” Rogue One. That’s concerning.

  4. iothereturned says:

NO, the Solo trailer featured “rocked up” version, of the TFA trailer music. I thought that was a nice touch, and the villain looks glam as f.

  5. Amblinman says:

@Night Owl, I agree with all of that. I’m just excited I get to see a movie I was looking forward to NOW. But yeah, theater is changing. Pretty soon it’ll just be Disney movies, everything else on Netflix.

Fuck Muppet Baby Solo. Han Solo is a fully formed rogue space pirate. He has no need of an origin.

  6. Bob Burns says:

Dodge. not Ford MLK – Ram Trucks.

Patriots fan, but…. good for Philadelphia. Sure would have liked to see one more Brady comeback.

  7. Triple Option says:

I haven’t seen The Commuter. The abbreviated TV spots I saw made it seem pretty generic. Plus, the time of year of release didn’t boost my confidence. I do realize Taken wasn’t a 4th of July release itself. Anyway, I forget where I was at but I saw poster for it that was fairly different than the others that I liked. Here
    https://tinyurl.com/yar47dpy

Nice throwback look. Although I vaguely remember I believe a Mission Impossible installment having similar artwork.

Also saw this ad looking for the previous link.
    https://tinyurl.com/y8en6tsb

On the surface I’d wonder if the film wasn’t a cross between The Parallax View and Altered States.

Speaking of ads, why aren’t companies trying to make more memorable ads for the Super Bowl? I realize they’re incredible expensive to air but if you do anything halfway unique I’d think that ad would have a great shot of having a second life online. Only for free. Hats off to the Tide concept. Like the Jack-n-the Box Martha Stewart. Most others were disappointing. This hasn’t been the first year like that. Kinda sad that they stopped.

  8. brack says:

Only true trailer was for JW2. The teaser trailer for MI: Fallout advertised to watch online was by far the best. Skyscraper looks like it could be a fun ripoff of Die Hard meets The Towering Inferno. Solo teaser was decent enough. Hopefully the true trailer today will be better. Guess we have NBC to thank for the lack of trailers except for JW2. So much for the argument thank Disney is taking over everything.

Game had meh defense until the last few minutes. Not a great SB. I had no dog in that fight, the NFL subjectiveneas of what makes a TD a TD is only part of the multitude of reasons people are watching football less overall than last year.

  9. amblinman says:

    Solo: Tokyo Drift.

  10. Night Owl says:

Yeah, no. Not feeling Solo. Damn. First of the new trailers that didn’t get my blood pumping. Donald Glover looks good sure but…eh.

Looks good enough to do well though. I’ve said all along though this movie will get beat up even if it does financially fine. The bar for standalones set by Rogue One is $500 million domestic at least and a billion WW. That’s a hell of a bar. Less than that will still be massively successful…but that won’t be the story.

  11. Hcat says:

Skipped the game because personally rooting for Philly or the Patriots is like picking a side in the argument between Trump and that Basketball Dad.

But do I understand this right, the unnamed 2017 Cloverfield film that was pushed to 2018 was instead funneled to Netflix for a pop-up premiere? Or was this a different spin-off and there is still a theatrical coming in April?

Because even though its early in the year, that we are a month in and Paramount is 14TH in market share without a release for another two weeks, putting one of their few releases of the year straight to streaming reeks of such desperation. I am not a fan of all this corporate merging but Lionsgate or someone needs to snatch these guys up immediately.

Always amazed that some cable channel has not thought of having their post game programing be a live feed of the chaos in the streets of the winning town. It sounds like Philly went bonkers last night.

  12. palmtree says:

They should have made LANDO instead. Missed opportunity.

  13. amblinman says:

Can anyone think of a bigger star with worst taste in projects than Dwayne Johnson?

  14. Glamourboy says:

A bigger star with worst taste in projects? The last ten years of Tom Cruise

  15. amblinman says:

@Glamourboy wow, really? Even his terrible/mediocre stuff at least looked interesting prior to release. I don’t even know what the fuck I’m watching when I see a trailer for Rampage. And Skyscraper plays like one of the parody trailers at the start of Tropic Thunder.

  16. iothereturned says:

So we are just going to act like Live, Die, Repeat is a bad movie now? Ghost Protocol? Nah.

The Rock, thinks he has to make these big and dumb action movies. I have no idea why, but he feels like he “HAS” to do it.

And the Eagles may have fans who booed Santa… but they’ve suffered. This decade has decided, that every fan base who has suffered for decades… gets to enjoy a championship. Also, I appreciate a fan base, who do backflips off of awnings! Who also propose in the middle of a huge celebration. That’s how you celebrate!

Fallout looks great, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a retread of the previous two movies. The stakes are raised even higher and yeah yeah yeah. I’m sure it will be fine.

Here’s the thing with Solo: Us Skywalker fans are not as hung up on, “What makes Solo… Solo.” I see young Han, and he’s doing stuff. Looks fun, because he’s not my favorite character. If he’s your favorite Star Wars character? Things may be different, but I am looking forward to it.

  17. amblinman says:

    @IO

The Rock *should* make big dumb action movies cause he’s built like the Rock, and has great physicality. The problem is either he or his agents choose the worst of the worst. I think the bigger problem is the dude wants to constantly prove his comedic chops (not with Skyscraper obv). Fine. Someone reboot True Lies with him, give Tiffany Haddish the Jamie Lee Curtis role, and some out-of-left-field-Tom-Arnoldesque casting for the Tom Arnold role – boom. Done.

On Solo: I honestly don’t have a dog in the fight. Like, I hate most prequels regardless of what it’s about. Granted, I’m a cranky 44 year old guy who will never see Han Solo as anyone but Harrison Ford. The movie looks whatever.

Cruise: I’m not the biggest fan but his taste in projects has generated possibly the most amazing Movie Star career possibly ever. He has been a legit movie star since the mid-80’s. If you look at the resume he works with the best consistently. That is not an accident.

Incidentally, Roger Ebert once had a fantastic insight as to why Cruise is so good in specific roles: he sells the severity of a situation really well. (Yeah, I know, it’s called “acting” but watching Cruise respond to shit goin down is different than watching other actors try to do likewise.)

  18. iothereturned says:

Man, he can’t be THE ROCK forever. His body, won’t let him, so at some point he has to mix it up. Skyscraper is his movie, he’s producing it, and he needs his team to pick better movies for him. It will probably make 50m or more opening weekend, and it may make bank overseas. Dwayne just needs to diversify, and stop making these obviously stupid movies.

And who wants to remake True Lies now? That movie, needs to go into the wastebin of history.

  19. amblinman says:

IO, that’s the problem. He wasted his prime ROCK years making shitty look-at-how-funny-I-can-be movies. Skyscraper is a “serious” action movie, which he should have been doing years ago. His quality control sucks though, so it doesn’t matter.

On a side note, have you seen the dude’s workout regimen? He’s totally gonna have Schwarzenegger disease as he gets older.

  20. Hcat says:

I feel the same way about Cruise as I do about Leo. They are not my favorite but I never feel like they are going to half ass it. If they are in a movie they are attempting to make it a MOVIE movie. Cruise may not stretch his dramatic muscles, and is too overreliant on franchises, but he has never made anything as lazy as the last few pirates movies or hastily put together as the last few transformers (though admittedly Mummy comes close).

So for worst movie star choices, Depp. And for who gets the Tom Arnold role in the imaginary True Lies remake, Bill Hader.

  21. brack says:

Worst of the worst? Are we just going to ignore that Dwayne Johnson stars in the really fun and super box office hit Jumanji? He is a big part of the film’s success, no? Skyscraper looks like silly fun. When he plays “serious” roles, he’s mostly ignored. Remember Snitch? Nobody else does either. Yeah Rampage and Skyscraper look dumb, but if fun, so what? He’s never going to win an Oscar (never say never, I know), and he’s red hot right now.

Everything about the Solo trailer looked decent except Alden Ehrenreich. Seems miscast, but maybe the trailer was a misrepresentation. Seemed like he was channeling Chris Pine’s rebellious Kirk from 2009’s Star Trek but with less charisma. I’ll give the actor the benefit of the doubt.

The last two Mission Impossible movies were fantastic. Looks like this will be a direct sequel of sorts, so maybe the momentum will keep going.

  22. amblinman says:

Johnny Depp will be heading into current Nic Cage territory within the next few years.

Probably about the same time Cage gets a 3rd act and starts popping up in good movies in smaller character roles.

  23. palmtree says:

That Jack Reacher sequel was pretty meh, and Cruise seemed to be phoning that one in. But otherwise, agreed he’s always fun to watch.

The Rock is a franchise unto himself, and I will gladly watch The Rock Does Die Hard.

  24. Glamourboy says:

I did state that I was referring to the last decade of Tom Cruise…so let’s start at Valkyrie, Knight and Day, (Yet another Mission Imposible is debatable)…ROCK OF AGES for fuck’s sake…Jack Reacher, Oblivion, (Ok, I love Edge of Tomorrow)…yet another Mission Impossible, yet another Jack Reacher…THE MUMMY…American Made….come on…have you ever seen an actor trash his career with such losers?

  25. iothereturned says:

That’s batting, at best, .500. Let me counterpoint: would you rather have what Tom Cruise has been doing at his age, or what Harrison Ford was doing at the same age in the 90s?

  26. Dr Wally Rises says:

“A bigger star with worst taste in projects? The last ten years of Tom Cruise”.

Edge of Tomorrow, Valkyrie, Reacher 1, Mission 4&5, Tropic Thunder and yes, American Made (‘Money every week, asshole’ – Bang!) are all better than the best movies Dwayne Johnson has ever done.

  27. Hcat says:

“come on…have you ever seen an actor trash his career with such losers?”

Shit have I fallen into a timeline where Burt Reynolds never existed? How the fuck do I get back? Quick tell me you have at least heard of Costner, Stallone, or Murphy. Dear lord what if I get a hankering to watch Tears of the Sun?

  28. iothereturned says:

Tears of the Sun shout out! Woooooooo! HC, let us all go watch Hooper, and have a good damn day!

  29. amblinman says:

American Made is a loser? Okay.

  30. Stella's Boy says:

I’m not crazy about the Mission: Impossible movies and haven’t even seen the last two in their entirety, and he is disappointingly bland in Jack Reacher 2 and The Mummy, which are both pretty lackluster. But American Made and Edge of Tomorrow are really excellent flicks, and I always want to love each new Cruise movie. I’m a big fan even if his track record is mixed.

Rampage and Skyscraper look really fun and I’ll gladly be there opening day. I love Johnson. Almost as much as I love watching the Eagles beat the Patriots. Nice catch Brady. #FlyEaglesFly

  31. leahnz says:

crap y’all made me watch the ‘solo’ trailer

since the powers-that-be seem hell bent on prequelling shit to death at least Han – a pop culture legend and icon – should’ve been anthony ingruber (i mean did enough people see ‘age of adeline’ to have a repeat in casting scuttle the notion? because damn), or even emory cohen with tricks to make him appear taller like Ford, achievable ala Hollywood since forever, speaking of the devil cruise. and hey maybe young han’s still got some growing to do yet.
straight-up mimicry is never advisable but similar voice cadence and subtle mannerisms help with the suspension of disbelief – observe phoenix, river as ford’s young indy on the right way to do it. whatever alden’s doing don’t cut it – and plus his hair is fucking hilarious, come on now did anyone think this through

  32. Triple Option says:

Edge of Tomorrow I thought was the type film that Cruise needed to make at least 5 years before he did. I think it would’ve won fans back who’d grown a bit tired of him and his off screen shtick. I like that does his stunts in Mission Impossible and the scene outside the airplane and outside the Dubai tower were cool. My problem with M:I is that they’re really running together. Sorta like some of the Fast/Furious films.

Which brings me to The Rock. I don’t know if it was the first one he was in but I thought he was good in one of the FF installments. Maybe more than one. It may be hard for him to find the perfect vehicle as I think many in this thread are alluding to. No one would doubt his toughness but would you really buy him in a straight action flick like Predator? As Jack Ryan? Maybe he’s just got to get older. I wasn’t that big into movies at the time but if after seeing Rocky IV would I have thought Stallone would be right for a film like Cop Land, I woulda said hells to the no. And I know I wouldn’t have been alone.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Hemsworth fell into that sorta track. Blackhat was just sorta meh. Rush was decent but I don’t know if he stood out in it. He kills it as Thor which is a tight line to walk of bombastic, friendly, funny and impenetrable. It’ll be hard not to become forgettable in other roles that he plays. How is he in 12 Strong?

Should we expect leading men to be who they were? One of my problems with the last Indy film was that they had Ford dodging bullets and doing crazy stunts like he had 30 years prior. Fine, if the first installment was when he was 18 but he was not. He was 40.

I really liked True Lies. Jumanji was OK but I think there’s an action comedy for Dwayne to star in that would be worth watching over and over and quoting lines from it 30 yrs after the fact.

  33. Hcat says:

After seeing Daylight I wouldn’t have thought that Stallone was right for Cop Land and that was his film immediately prior.

The Solo trailer did nothing for me, at it takes a lot to make me not perk up when I hear Chewbacca roar or Woody appears onscreen. I am actually a little pissed about them giving Han a romantic interest, I prefer the thought that he was just crashing around the galaxy until Leia gave him a reason to pick a side.

So far the summers priorities are:

    Oceans 8
    Predator
    Fallen Kingdom
    Fallout
    Battle Angel
    Skyscraper
    Deadpool
    Ant Man and Wasp

but there are bound to be a Searchlight or A24 that gets announced that pops up the list. Plus I have no idea what the comedy landscape looks like this summer.

  34. amblinman says:

“Should we expect leading men to be who they were? One of my problems with the last Indy film was that they had Ford dodging bullets and doing crazy stunts like he had 30 years prior. Fine, if the first installment was when he was 18 but he was not. He was 40.”

Agreed on Indy. I’d rather they simply reboot that franchise rather than wheeling out an old Ford to try and continue doing what he was doing 30 years ago. Or, you know, LET IT GO ALREADY (Does Indy Jones mean anything to this generation? Did today’s kids grow up with the movies like they did SW? Dunno.)

  35. Pete B says:

Good God Leah, I’d never heard of Anthony Ingruber so I had to Google him and this came up:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bba_wPdLxp4

So what was the problem? Too on the nose?

  36. Dr Wally Rises says:

‘Agreed on Indy. Dunno.)’

There is one possible route Indy 5 could take which would still take Ford’s full involvement but get around his advancing age – make Indy HIMSELF the Macguffin. In other words, Blade Runner 2049 the shit out of it. Maybe Indy, like Deckard, disappeared years ago in order to protect a valuable secret (the location of The Ark or The Grail maybe?). This would allow a younger actor to handle the action / quest elements along the way, and maybe this is where the persistent rumors of Pratt’s involvement in another Indy movie come into play. Who knows, but it’s an approach that would work.

  37. Bulldog says:

My idea for Indy 5, do the reverse of Indy 3, not my favorite of the bunch for sure, but start with an old Indy, have him stumble upon the Fountain of Youth, and see him get younger before our very eyes, until he’s some twenty something year old, but with all the experience and knowledge of the old Indy. (Copyright) 🙂

  38. Hcat says:

I think Marion would be on board with that

But given the steady deterioration of the series, lost half a step in the two years from the first sequel, a whole step in the four years to the next, tumbled down the stairs for the last installment, Indy basically looses 2% of his coolness for every year removed from Raiders. So given this distance they would probably get the same end result if they just remade Allan Quatermainn and the Lost City of Gold and left Indy alone.

  39. leahnz says:

holy shit Pete B, i hadn’t seen that (i was just going by ingruber’s perf as young Ford in ‘age of adeline’ haha)

it’s basically an audition reel. did that actually hurt his chances rather than help, because it’s so public? it’s almost eerie how much he nails it. coulda shoulda woulda at this point i guess but they really fucked up
(i wonder how much say – if any – H ford had in who should play him as young solo)

“I prefer the thought that he was just crashing around the galaxy until Leia gave him a reason to pick a side.”

aw, this (almost made me cry, like every damn thing does these days)

  40. YancySkancy says:

Ingruber definitely nailed that impression — actually, impersonation. Maybe that was the problem. It proved he can recreate a Harrison Ford performance, but not that he can build a fresh performance from a new script. Don’t know if he actually auditioned for producers, but maybe his limitations are clearer when he’s not recreating something we all know. Or maybe they just wanted someone with more experience, which Ehrenreich has.

  41. iothereturned says:

I’m down with Bronx Tale: you have more than one great love in your life. Hell. Leia wasn’t even Hans first wife. Speaking of SW: I thank KK from keeping us from the shit Confederate show the GoT guys wanted to do, but no. How about some creators of color and women running SW for a while? That would be exciting unlike today’s news.

  42. Hcat says:

IO, yes I agree with that as well, but Bronx tale and Solo are too entirely different types of fiction. SW is more Fairy Tale where things like one true love are not out of place.

And I realize what struck me as off about the Solo trailer…The title of the film is a proper name so half the trailer should be a supercut of everytime someone says that characters name in the film. “Solo, SOLO, solo, soooloo, SOLO, SOLO, SOLO. solo, solo, SOLO!!!!!!.”

Doesn’t anyone care about the rules anymore?

  43. Hcat says:

So tossing Star Wars to the Game of Thrones guys means that we can have another nine films but this time it takes five of them to get off Tattooine?

Is Johnson’s new trilogy going to be the true continuation while GOT’s will be more of a Star Wars After Dark interpretation?

  44. Bulldog says:

Re GoT guys doing SW: A walker army led by White Walkers is just too much nerd nirvana for one movie. But regenerated space dragons could be cool.

  45. Dr Wally Rises says:

My take, by the by – Weiss and Benioff are doing Knights of the Old Republic and Johnson is continuing the sequel trilogy era in another direction (I maintain that the shooting star at the end of TLJ is the Yuuhzon Vong arriving from another galaxy). I also believe W&B are better when tethered to adapting someone else’s material, hence KOTOR. Look at the relative decline in GOT over the last couple of seasons now all of Martin’s source novels have been thoroughly mined, and it gives one slight cause for concern.

  46. iothereturned says:

HC, SW has never been a fairy tale. It’s opera. Space… Opera , so I like Han having a life before it became all jedis and a princess.

Outside of that? The Skywalker saga ends with nine. It’s just terribly short sided, but KK is going to do what she’s going to do. After Solo? I’m good.

  47. GdB says:

The only way they should do a young Han Solo movie is if it was animated and voiced by Ford.

This thing is a potential travesty. Like someone on here said before, this movie is most likely going to ruin Han’s arc in ANH by showing he’s really been a good guy with a heart of Gold all along. Ugh, no thanks.

Ford is just too iconic as Han and Indy. To James Bond those characters is just going to diminish the power of the characters that are almost completely anchored from Ford’s portrayal.

I really like a lot of what Disney has done. But the shit they took on Han and Luke by how they closed out their stories is leaving too sour a taste to enjoy the rest, for me. Who knows, anything can happen in a Space Fantasy. They may come up with a way to give these characters a better send off, but its doubtful. But for now, I can’t get with the corporate fan fiction.

With Ron Howard directing, this young Han Solo movie should have made him even younger and do American Graffitti Star Wars style. End it with getting the MF and the Kessel run as the drag race at the end of American Graffitti. Then you have enough time to believe the actor ages into Ford. But this story also bumps up close enough to ANH that believing this is the same guy we meet in a couple years in Mos Eisley is less believable than laser swords or space ships that make sound in space.

  48. iothereturned says:

If you were wondering, if GdB are the same person. The post above should seal it, that we are not. I’ve never thought Han was some bad ass. He was always a good guy. If he was a bastard. He would have never took Luke and Obi to Alderran. The need for Han to be some tough, that was always a hustler, is continually goofy to me.

  49. GdB says:

IO, Who thought we were the same person?

  50. JSPartisan says:

The io thing… Hurts my head. It’s not easy on the eyes. That aside. A lot of people, GdB. A lot of people.

  51. brack says:

    “It’s a trap!”

  52. JSPartisan says:

Only if you think I’d argue with myself about Han Solo. I’ve never cared that much about the character, and love him most in ROTJ!

  53. brack says:

Pretty sure I was the only one who made a joke about you two being one of the same. If that’s “a lot of people”, then I love being plural.

  54. HCAT says:

    JS/IO

I didn’t mean fairy tale as dismissive but yes Opera is even better, is there any genre that reinforces true destiny love than opera?

This whole exercise is beginning to feel like Butch and Sundance: The Early Years. Maybe not a bad movie, but broth to stew when compared to its source.

  55. Pete B. says:

Actually I made a comment about GdB being IO’s “alter ego” during the TLJ debate. He was the ‘good cop’ to IO/JS’s ‘bad cop’.

  56. Stella's Boy says:

The 15:17 to Paris is in a race to the bottom with Fifty Shades Freed, 11% to 7% at the moment. Clint’s lowest rating as a director is The Rookie’s 29%. Strange to see a Clint film with such a low rating but it does look pretty bad.

  57. Hcat says:

There are a hundred reasons not to like the Rookie, but right now I can’t think of one.

A little surprised that’s the lowest one, I don’t think I have ever been able to get through Absolute Power.

  58. Stella's Boy says:

It’s been so long since I’ve seen it I remember almost nothing about The Rookie. Absolute Power didn’t get great reviews either. I remember thinking it was OK, not great. Good cast helps make it watchable. Obviously Clint’s films gave received mediocre to bad reviews before, but it still feels weird to see a new film of his get such bad reviews.

  59. amblinman says:

“There is one possible route Indy 5 could take which would still take Ford’s full involvement but get around his advancing age – make Indy HIMSELF the Macguffin. Who knows, but it’s an approach that would work.”

Sure, this would be fine. But I like my own idea: let the whole thing go already. I don’t know that Indiana Jones or an extension of that myth really speaks to culture today. If anything, the idea of a white guy pillaging other culture’s artifacts probably isn’t the way to go anymore.

On another note: the new Venom teaser is good on its own merits but that whole project is one giant WTF for me. A Venom movie without Spider-Man makes no sense. The character is supposed to be Spidey’s evil doppleganger, at least that’s how he started out. His powers mimic Spider-Man’s. His costume is supposed to be an inversion of Spider-Man’s (I was probably the *only* kid on the planet who wished Marvel had kept that costume on Spidery post-Secret Wars. I thought it was waaaaaaaay cooler than the red and blue.)

No idea how this is supposed to work. Really bizarre choice by Sony.

  60. Michael Bergeron says:

15:17 to Paris is like a Bresson film directed by Clint Eastwood

  61. Hcat says:

Rookie had some nice action set pieces, I think that’s the first time I recall cars being dropped off a truck at a pursuing vehicle, but when it came to the plot that tied them together it was tired and repetitive. A couple weeks ago someone stated that Cape and Spandex films were written by algorithm, the same complaint could certainly be leveled at Rookie, Tango and Cash, Passenger 57.

I don’t know who said it but I remember reading one time “the problem with Hollywood is not that they necessarily make bad movies, its just that they make the same movie over and over again.”

  62. spassky says:

ABSOLUTE POWER kills in some scenes. that being said, the last third is a shit heap. Strangely enough, I watched it because it (along with titles like both Garfields, Transformers) was on a free on-demand-like Chinese cable collection.

“He would have never took Luke and Obi to Alderran.”

I hate hate hate keep talking about SW shit, but… it’s pretty clear they pay him a shit load of money.

I wish “Solo” was just less… heavy. I really wanted a “Bob La Flambeur”-type crime film (sexy, amusing, dangerous), just to break from the mold. Too much Star Wars in too short of a time. Just make a bounty hunter movie already. Does anyone give a shit about the force or the original trilogy anymore? It’s dead.

  63. Michael Bergeron says:

15:17 to Paris starts out just like Lady Bird, in a Catholic school in Sacramento

  64. iothereturned says:

Spassky, the reason why SW doesn’t have the shine it did two years ago, is because people care about the OT and the force. Disney has taken this franchise to places, that are just… meh. When we are in diminishing return land, and Phase 4 is killing SW left and right. They will have to take SW back to the beginning… again.

And a real scoundrel takes the money. The whole need for Han to be something that’s never portrayed on screen, is always something that’s been confusing… to me.

I also, love Absolute Power. It’s ridiculous, but it’s a thriller ridiculous.

  65. Ray Pride says:

    “Models.”

  66. Sideshow Bill says:

I remember liking ABSOLUTE POWER. Or maybe I just miss Gene Hackman.

I do miss Gene Hackman. Who doesn’t?

The street-side meet-and-greet took place almost immediately after Jerry hit a legal snag over “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. ” TMZ broke the story … a producer claims Jerry jacked the idea ’cause he didn’t wanna credit (or pay) the guy as a creator of the show.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
