Geeeeeezzzz!!!

I closed the discussion on the political war on the Bush/Vader entry… I appreciate that people are passionate about their positions on politics, but can’t we try to discuss this issue?
Is there a reasonable, direct comparison between Bush and Vader? Or is it just press puffery?
Also, I brought up the issue of Balian killing lots of people, whether in defense or aggression, with reason. I think that the line between a “good” murder and a “bad” murder is fascinating. And I think it is relevant to Star Wars III as well.
I am proud that the personal attacks on this blog are more sophisticated than on some other blogs… but I wish people would stick to the argument instead of telling those with whom they disagree how stupid they must be. It just isn’t productive… at least not as the main course. As an occasional side dish, it can be terribly amusing.

  1. Terence D says:

Dave, this is a dumb argument since Lucas created Vader in 1975 while Bush was in his mid twenties. If you want to say Vader is typical of anyone in power than thats fine. But there is no way he can be linked to Bush. It is just desperate critics trying to find something deeper in a popcorn film.

  2. Kenn says:

The Bush/Vader comparision is ridiculous. Lucas has Obi-Wan saying, “Only Sith’s believe in absolutes!” Yet, it’s everything that Lucas taught in the original trilogy. Now, in the prequels it’s the Jedi’s belief in no absolutes that destroys them.
My theory? Nothing wrong with a little absolute or non-absolute thinking as long as you balance it with some rational, sane thought. The old, “one innocent person dead isn’t worth it to save the world”, only works in movies. In real life, the greater good always has to be taken into account. And yes, one innocent life is worth it to save the world. Sorry guys, I know it’s painful to believe. I just hope it isn’t me! šŸ˜‰ Or anybody else.
My prediction of the future of Bush’s growing Imperial rule: Somehow, he will be overthrown in 2008 when something called an “Election” takes place. And guess what? Everyone will be pissed off at that President too.
And referring to the previous blog.
    Terrence D and Stella’s Boy:
Can’t we all just get along? This is called a blog and it’s all about opinion. People have specific points of view and I enjoy hearing them all. Even when they frustrate me, I’ll defend their right to express it. Besides, I learn a lot from all of them and try to keep a sane, balanced view of things.
Now saying all that, if you believe that history books were miraculously written by themselves and not by someone with their own particular point view, than that worries me.
Remember that saying, “History is written by the Victors”?

  3. G-Man says:

The fucking Democrats are using this to try and…just kidding.
    I agree with Terence.

  4. bicycle bob says:

vader isn’t even the leader of this. a better example would have been the emperor but these critics are either too lazy or too dumb to realize it. i think a hitler reference is a little better since u got a power hungry dictator and stormtroopers. thats a tad easier to stomach than lazy writing

  5. Stella's Boy says:

Kenn, why did you single out Terence and myself? We were not having a problem with each other. That was not necessary.

  6. Arc says:

I found no direct Bush/Vader connections in the article, but the Anakin line “Your either with me, or you are my enemy” is very Bush.
Other than that, the main focus that Lucas has for Sith is to show a Republic turning into an Empire, just as Rome did in 44 BC. Shadow of Rome, the new Capcom Playstation 2 game, deals with this exact time in history, allowing you to fill the role of Julius Caesars’ nephew, who would later become the first Emperor of Rome. 40 years of peace, the Pax Romana, followed. The Star Wars galaxy wasn’t so lucky.
The reason both of these Republics became Empires? Need for power, just as the article states. Does America have a true need for absolute power? The part where it all falls apart for our country is that we simply no longer have the resources to control other nations, and we’ve never been good at it anyways. I doubt Bush himself seeks this type of world power just for himself, but it has been clearly shown that many of his benefactors and other groups on The Hill seek it, for the good of the nation in their eyes, but history hasn’t been so black and white on the matter.
The man on the street views in the article are weak, but Lucas has very direct and clear views he is trying to express.

  7. Don says:

I haven’t seen SITH yet and I’ve avoided any and all discussions of it…per an older blog entry. That being said…
If there is a comparison between Bush and Vader, it’s probably a weak and cheesy one as Lucas tries to add some substance and/or discussion to his latest merchandising vehicle.
As much as I love Lucas’s films, the guy has yet to show me he’s anything but the ultimate fanboy or tech geek. I’m sure his political views are as matchbook cover as 80% of America’s- left or right wing. ZZZzzzz.

  8. Kenn says:

No harm meant, love all around…you two seemed to have a little trouble with every one having an opinion.
“I wouldn’t say expert but I know enough to know when people are wrong and off the mark. It’s not a big deal but you can’t go into a whole diatribe if you don’t know what you’re talking about. Pick up a history book. The library calls your name.”

    and:
“I agree Terence. It is tiresome to read a diatribe when it’s clear that the person has no clue what they’re talking about.”

which seems to have led to DP’s:
“I am proud that the personal attacks on this blog are more sophisticated than on some other blogs… but I wish people would stick to the argument instead of telling those with whom they disagree how stupid they must be. It just isn’t productive… at least not as the main course. As an occasional side dish, it can be terribly amusing.”

  9. TheBrotherhoodOfTheLostSkeletonOfCadavra says:

If you’re looking for a more valid comparison, how about HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX? Dig: Hogwarts (i.e., America) has a new headmaster illegally assigned to them (i.e., Bush). She immediately starts issuing all sorts of edicts restricting the students’ activities (i.e., The Patriot Act, et al), with particular abuse heaped on Gryffindor (i.e., Democrats). She gets most of her cues from the slimy behind-the-scenes Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge (i.e., Karl Rove), as well as help from gossip columnist Rita Skeeter (i.e., Matt Drudge) and her rag of a paper, “The Daily Prophet” (i.e., Fox News). And of course, everyone lives in constant fear of the hardly-ever-seen epitome of all that is evil, Lord Voldemort (i.e., Osama Bin Laden).
Okay, everybody! Let’s go string up that traitorous bitch J.K. Rowling!

  10. lota says:

Better assemble the posse quick Skeleton, Rowling’s scheduled a midnight meeting to brainwash more liquid minds of youth [World Dominance. not bad for a single parent].
“Harry Potter author JK Rowling will read from her latest book, Half-Blood Prince, at the stroke of midnight July 16, the book’s release date, in Edinburgh Castle. It will be broadcast around the world on television and radio, according to the BBC.
Attending will be 70 “cub” reporters — aged eight to 16 — who won competitions from newspapers around the world. “

  11. Kenn says:

    Brotherhood:
By all things deemed worthy in this world, please tell me that you made that up!

  12. Stella's Boy says:

I highly doubt that the harmless exchange between Terence and myself led to David shutting down that discussion. I believe it was the far more heated discussion involving G-Man and others (myself included).

  13. Stella's Boy says:

And I have no problem with other people having an opinion. Not sure why you’d assume that, but it’s not true.

  14. joefitz84 says:

Way too many people out there hate Bush. For no reason other than the fact that they blame him for losing. But to call him Darth Vader? Thats really funny. So who was Vader in Star Wars 4? Jimmy Carter?

  15. Stella's Boy says:

It’s a little more complicated than that joefitz. That’s not the one and only reason there are so many people in the world who dislike Bush.

  16. Terence D says:

I agree with you Stella. I think it was the other stuff above us for the shutdown. I do not mind the back and forth especially when its enlightening and both people have points they believe in. Kenn, you should do what I said and check your facts before you go sprouting stuff trying to stir things up for no reason. We are not 12 years old here. We are not that dumb.

  17. bicycle bob says:

people around the world hate bush because they hate america. they hate that america stands up for itself and others and is the #1 super power in the world. basically they resent us being in charge. jealousy because they want the power. a lot of americans resent us being #1 too. its how it works. but how this makes bush vader? i’ll never know. but its a pretty weak analogy

  18. Stella's Boy says:

bob, that is incredibly simplistic. It is so much more complicated than that. People around the world don’t all hate America. And hating Bush does not mean that you hate America, no matter where you live, here or abroad. Plenty of Republicans hated Clinton with a passion when he was president. Did they all hate America, too? I’m sure you hated Clinton back then (and still do). Does that mean you hate America?

  19. SaveFarris says:

So if Bush is Vader, is Palpatine Rove or Cheney?

  20. SpamDooley says:

    G-Man
Thank you for making certain I will never ever leave Hollywood except to go to NY or Europe.
Now can you fill up my Slurpee and shut your piehole?
I am Spam Dooley and I use Garnier Fructis.

  21. VGM says:

My question is, where were all these reporters in 2002 when there were equally obvious historical parallels to be drawn with “Attack of the Clones”? One that springs to mind is the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Can they even remember that far back (to 2002, I mean, not 1964)?
I’m in a distinct minority on this, but I find the politics one of the sharpest, most sophisticated things in the prequel trilogy (of which, full disclosure, I’m a great admirer). I must have been the only one struck by the profound cynicism (and disillusionment) of Amidala’s response when Palpatine suggests she try to get the blockade of Naboo lifted via legal action: “The courts take even longer to decide things than the Senate.” Or take Queen Jamilla’s empty pronouncement in “Clones” that “The day we stop believing in democracy is the day we lose it.” Only someone who’d already stopped believing in democracy could make such a fatuous statement. The political narrative has been central throughout the PT, but it’s only picked up on now that it bears the most passing, tenuous resemblance to contemporary events.
The transformation of the Roman Republic into the Empire has been mentioned above. Since we’re talking about historical allusions and parallels, let’s try to come up with examples of a democracy being subverted from within and replaced by a non-democratic regime. The following are all drawn from French history, which is what I know best.
    1793/4 – The Terror
    1797 – Coup d’etat of 18 Fructidor
1798 – Coup of 22 Floreal (this and the previous both launched by the government against itself to purge hostile elements from the representative body)
1799 – 18 Brumaire (Napoleon overthrows the Directory)
1851 – 18 Brumaire of Louis Napoleon (becomes Napoleon III)
1940 – Fall of the Third Republic, establishment of Vichy (controversial, since the Nazis did most of the work; but they had help from nationalist, anti-democratic elements which never reconciled themselves to the Third Republic)
Not all of these examples fit equally well. But at worst they’re no less accurate than the one propelling the discussion.
By the way, Jo Rowling hasn’t been a single parent for some years. Not that her marriage affects in any way her plan for world domination.

  22. bicycle bob says:

ok. ur the one guy who watches the star wars flicks for politics. we found him everyone!

  23. BluStealer says:

VGM, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

  24. bicycle bob says:

thats where ur wrong stella. i never hated clinton. i just laughed at his stupidity. the guy was plowing a fat 24 yr old intern while in oval office. thats funny. he was more embarrassed he got caught with a pig than he was for cheating on his wife. jfk got monroe. he got porky. i loved him for the comedy we got and how he set back liberals. even a diehard like yourself has to admit that him leading ur party has caused irrevocable damage. anytime he speaks or anytime he shows up anywhere it becomes controversy and scandal. it stalks him. does that make him vader too?

  25. Stella's Boy says:

It’s not really my party bob. My views (especially on social issues) may be liberal, but that doesn’t mean I’m a hard-core Democrat. I don’t think of it as “my party.” You say you never hated Clinton. I’m not sure I really believe that, but it’s not a big deal. How about all those on the right who did hate him? And boy did they hate him. Still do. Just as passionately, if not more so, than some hate Bush. Do all of those people who hated Clinton then and now also hate America? That’s what I want to know.

  26. Mark says:

How does one make the inference that Darth Vader is Bush or really any leader today? Some writers will stop at nothing to combine issues and things that really are not related at all. It’s embarrassing.

  27. Chester says:

Funny how the resident right-wingers can so furiously deny the films’ political overtones when George Lucas himself has acknowledged them to be among his primary motivators. In the current issue of Entertainment Weekly, Lucas says flatly that the “Star Wars” series “was not written as a movie. It’s basically a character study and exhibition piece about politics.”
Once again, another example of incontrovertible fact-based truth vs. passionate right-wing denial.

  28. jeffmcm says:

Lucas has said that he first got the idea back during the Vietnam War and transmuted the Viet Cong into the Rebels and the U.S. into the Empire.

  29. LordEnigma says:

An all the officers in the OT being played by English
actors not only a convience for the production. Yet
also due to the whole “the sun never sets on the
    British Empire” thing.
Also, G-Man, you missed my point. I did not join
your argument. Just pointed out your inaccuracies.
You actually claim the Tet offensive worked? Apparently
someone missed that whole speech by Bobby Kennedy
that told the truth about the Tet, and led to his
    unfortunately short-lived Presidential run.
But please keep stating inaccuracies to a somewhat
Historian. They tickle, and make laugh.
One last thing; if Bush would be anything. He would
be Darth Vader. Think about the relationship between
Vader and Tarkin, and I think it will become obvious.

  30. Kenn says:

What do you know? Terence D and Stella’s Boy agree with each other and continue to bash away.
And Terence, with your “check the facts” comment. What fact? The fact that I said that FDR and Churchill wrote off half of Europe to Stalin? There is nothing controversial about that. It happened. Of course they have their own reasons for doing it. I didn’t say they didn’t. But tell that to Europeans who lived behind the Iron Curtain and see if they care.
It’s like if I say that we dropped two atomic bombs on Japan and you argue that it was done because our government estimated that 200,000 American GI’s would lose their lives in an invasion of Japan. That IS what happened, but it doesn’t mean we didn’t drop the bombs. And I’m sure the people of Japan wouldn’t care much for that excuse either. Though it’s valid if you were one of the GI’s that would have went.

  31. TheBrotherhoodOfTheLostSkeletonOfCadavra says:

To Kenn: I drew the analogy, but it’s all right there in the book!
To Bi-Bob: People around the world don’t hate America. They hate (and fear) Bush and his band of cutthroats. About a month ago, Clinton made a public appearance in Spain, and there were countless thousands of people cheering him as if he were Elvis back from the grave. As soon as we replace President Slingblade with a normal human being, the hate and fear will vanish.

  32. Chester says:

There’s a pretty good article in today’s LA Times Calendar section, reported from Cannes, about the influence of George Lucas’s political beliefs on “Star Wars.” At a press conference there, Lucas stated that he obviously couldn’t have conceived of the original storyline so many years ago with Bush and Iraq in mind, but agrees that the story definitely has developed parallels and has been progressively influenced by what he believes this administration is doing. The reporter goes so far as to say that some of Lucas’s comments echoed those made last year in Cannes by Michael Moore when he presented “Fahrenheit 9/11.” (So are any of you right-wing loyalists gonna boycott “Revenge of the Sith” now? Will Stella’s Boy be induced to see it?)
You can read the article at http://www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/cl-et-starwars16may16,0,6758645.story?coll=cl-calendar. You’ll need an LA Times membership, but it’s free.

  33. G-Man says:

LordEnigma, who are you? I don’t recall you ever posting in the political war. When did I respond to one of your previous posts?
What do you mean I “claim the Tet offensive worked?”
I’ll restate the facts on Tet for the third time. It is a FACT that after Tet the VIETNAMESE were finished, kaput, through, over, ripe for the picking, however you want to put it.
But protestors and spineless politicians used it as an excuse to start our withdrawal from Vietnam. For Christ’s sake these are not controversial statements. Go read ANYTHING about Tet.

  34. Stella's Boy says:

Kenn, who did I bash? Why are you so sensitive about this? I did not bash you or anyone else. I just explained that the exchange between Terence and I did not lead to David closing that particular discussion. Is that bashing? Jeez, man, give it a rest already. And no Chester, I will still not be seeing the movie. I just don’t care about it at all. Not even a little bit.

  35. jeffmcm says:

If you don’t care about it, why are you posting on a Blog about it?

  36. Lota says:

yes I read what Lucas said re. Vietnam. But when I was a kid, the first thing that hit me seeing Empire Strikes Back was how much the Empire’s officers/staff looked like the Telmarines from Prince Caspian (CS Lewis). I thought their uniforms, hats, even physical description of the features of the men etc fit the Telmars so well I figured Lucas did a wee bit of borrowing. Go look! The drawings! Capn Needa was the perfect Telmar.
But maybe that’s because I had no recollection/knowledge of Vietnam politics at the time.

  37. Stella's Boy says:

What, because I don’t want to see the movie, I’m not allowed to mention it at all? Can’t discuss it in any way, shape or form? Chester mentioned that I might it see following what Lucas has been saying about it. I can’t comment on that?

  38. jeffmcm says:

I’m just questioning why someone with no interest in a movie would _want_ to discuss said movie at all, much less go to an online blog thread regarding it. I ignored the whole blog discussion of Jamie Foxx and Dreamgirls, for example, because I don’t care about it.

  39. Stella's Boy says:

I just like talking about movies. Even ones I will probably never see. Sometimes I’ll just read what’s being said and not comment. Other times, I feel compelled to share my thoughts.

  40. L&DB says:

Jeff, if Poland puts up a “post your thoughts on
Episode III” thread, and SB posted on that. It
would be rather confusing. However, this is more
about a mad man 20 something who thinks he knows
something about Vietnam. G-Man, google Bobby
Kennedy’s speech on the Tet Offensive. Instead of
implying you KNOW HISTORY. Go and read something
about it. Again, the man got a PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDACY
FROM THAT SPEECH! The real ramifications of the
Tet offensive also had a hand in LBJ’s refusal to
    run for re-election.

  41. Duck of Death says:

There are definitely some interesting Bush/Vader comparisons to be made:
    1. Both have rebellious daughters;
    2. Both enjoy pushing around and imposing their will upon men with British accents;
    3. Both are intent upon ruling the galaxy;
    4. Both have a “sad devotion to [an] ancient religion” that has not helped them locate their respective hidden rebel bases;
    5. Both strike down opponents who rise to become more powerful than they can possibly imagine. Kerry 2008!! (I kid.)
However, Bush and Vader differ in one very important respect: Vader actually fought in a war!

  42. bicycle bob says:

stellas a basher. thats what he does. but i still am waiting to hear what films hes passionate about besides jane fonda films

  43. Terence D says:

Just because someone has no interest in seeing a film doesn’t mean that person can’t comment on the film, the actors, the director, the industry, the gossip, etc. It is what the blog is for. Different views on differing films and the industry.
Kenn, I wish you would have stated that first since you didn’t before. And I will continue to point out how wrong you are. Going back and trying to change what you said is not going to help.

  44. BluStealer says:

This Kenn has a lot of hatred. He is in danger of turning to the Dark Side. Maybe he is Vader.

  45. joefitz84 says:

He’s probably more like Jabba the Hutt from his posts. A little too bitter and yes he will have another piece of cake and pie.

  46. Kenn says:

BluStealer: The following is not an attack on you. I’m just commenting on your post.
No hatred here. Just pointing out two posters who seem to just bash (subtlely and not so subtlely), for the hell of it. I mean, what the heck does Terence D mean when he says above you,
“And I will continue to point out how wrong you are. Going back and trying to change what you said is not going to help.”
Wrong with what? Change what I said? What?
Notice how Brotherhood said, talking about a previous post, “To Kenn: I drew the analogy, but it’s all right there in the book!”
No animosity there. He doesn’t bash. He states things that he believes are right. Backs ’em up with some salient points and doesn’t come off mean spirited. And that’s cool with me.
Read Terence D’s posts. I don’t think he’s said anything but how stupid someone is to post what they posted.
And on that note, I declare a truce…at least from my side. I will never discuss this again…I swear…really.

  47. joefitz84 says:

Calm down, Jabba. No one cares about your problems. Keep the personal stuff to yourself.

  48. bicycle bob says:

watch out joe. pizza the hutt kenn may eat u for saying that to him. or he’ll go on a rant that is illegible

  49. Stella's Boy says:

bob, I had no idea you were waiting for me to state what films I am passionate about. I would be happy to tell you, if you truly want to know. I am passionate about many films. Also, you called me a basher. Your post at 7:59 AM about Kenn. Isn’t that bashing?

  50. Terence D says:

Kenn, I don’t understand the hostility. I never called you out. Obviously, you took what I said to heart but I can’t do anything about your apparent sensitivity. My point is don’t preach about history if you don’t know what you’re talking about especially on a movie site. Apparently, you took that to mean you. I’ll let you deal with your demons. While you finish reading up and researching of course.

  51. bicycle bob says:

i was stating the obvious stella. u are what u are. a basher. its fine. i accept u for being u. and i’d be glad to hear ur favorite movies since i don’t believe u even like movies surprise all of us.

  52. joefitz84 says:

Stella’s Boy, over 90% of every post you have here tries to make fun of someone for disagreeing with you.

  53. Stella's Boy says:

bob, why do you never answer my questions? Didn’t you just get done bashing Kenn? Or was calling him Pizza the Hutt meant to be a compliment? You throw out a third-grade insult like that and then call me a basher? I’d be happy to tell you my favorite movies, unless you’re just going to bash them and tell me how wrong I am. If that is not the case, I’d love to send you a list of my favorites. And then I would expect you to do the same. I’d love to see your list.
joefitz, where did you come up with 90%? Prove it. You call someone Jabba the Hutt and then claim I bash people. How does that work?

  54. bicycle bob says:

how is that bashing him? i can’t make lighthearted humor over the fact that someone compared kenny to jabba the hutt? u really gotta relax stella. seems the liberal in u needs a break for once. all the attacking u do has worn u down and ruined what little sense of humor u have left. and we’re still waiting for ur film list

  55. Terence D says:

Stella’s Boy, he is right. Most of your posts are in the bashing column. As long as you lose the personal insults. The “you’re a dummy” and “you’re gay” comments, I think you will be fine. I like the fact that you have strong views and say them with an interesting slant. But I would too like to hear about your passionate films since this is why we are all here. Am I right?

  56. Kenn says:

The one thing I’ve learned in the last two or three days is that you just don’t get someone’s true feelings from reading their words in a blog. You can’t tell if they are yelling, if they are joking or if they are being vicious…okay, maybe vicious, but I wasn’t trying to be vicious and I haven’t resorted to cursing or name calling (not saying anyone else has either). I apologize to anyone that took it that way, rightly or wrongy. Have a good day and make sure you tell someone you love them today.
    Terence D: I love you. šŸ˜‰ That was a joke…but I do care.

  57. Kenn says:

And I’m definitely more of a Boba Fett then Jabba. I can’t even speak Huttese. And that’s the pre-prequel Boba when we didn’t know he was a clone.

  58. Terence D says:

I won’t kiss you or tell you I love you because well that is just not who I am. I will accept a handshake.

  59. Mark says:

You just learned that you can’t judge someones true feelings over a couple of sentences? I am impressed with your growth as a person. You’re better off as Jabba than Boba. Jabba had power.

  60. G-Man says:

    L&DB,
    FACTS
#1 – Tet was a catastrophic military defeat for the North Vietnamese.
#2 – Tet was a huge political victory for the North Vietnamese since it initiated our pullout from Vietnam.
I challenge anyone to disprove these facts. L&DB, to put it bluntly, you are full of shit.

  61. bicycle bob says:

hes right. tet was a win for us. not the crushing, demoralizing defeat walter cronkite went on air and said. it was like the press was working for the vc

  62. Terence D says:

L&DB, maybe you should google Kennedy and Vietnam again. Because if it wasn’t for them we would not have been there. They were the ones escalating troop levels. But Liberals cannot say a bad word about their royal family and get selective amnesia. Did Lucas make Vader after JFK or LBJ?

  63. joefitz84 says:

Was this before or after John Kerry shot himself and wrote up the reports for his own medals?

  64. Stella's Boy says:

Was this before or after Bush went AWOL and used every single connection he had to avoid going to Vietnam? Was it before or after Cheney used one of his five deferments because he had (in his words) better things to do?

  65. Stella's Boy says:

And troop levels went way, way up between 1965 and 1968. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Kennedy was not alive then.

  66. joefitz84 says:

And that was a Democratic administration in charge of troop levels then. How are they the party of pacifists now? FDR, Truman, and JFK are rolling over in there graves.

  67. Terence D says:

Stella’s Boy, was it after Clinton high tailed it to London? Just curious.

  68. bicycle bob says:

stella if u don’t think serving in the national guard is service to ur country u don’t know anything about the military. there are plenty of guys who will rip u to shreds for even stating that. it beats the guys who ran to canada or england or burnt their draft cards now doesn’t it? u should be bowing before anyone who served in any capacity.

  69. joefitz84 says:

Does that make Uncle Owen, Bill Clinton? For not getting involved? Is Aunt Beru, Hillary?

  70. BluStealer says:

I think the Clintons fashion themselves as Luke and Leia. Minus all the sexual chemistry.

I think it makes the Bush Twins Luka and Leia? Now that’s disturbing.

Chelsea is Admiral Akbar? I know way too much about this series.

    Whos Han Solo? Bill Frist?

I agree with you about the way you view the issue. I remember, long time ago, Jack London said something like “Everything positive has a negative side; everything negative has a positive side.” I also find it interesting to see different points of views and learn useful things in the discussion.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” ā€” some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it ā€” I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury ā€” he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” ā€” and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging ā€” I was with her at that moment ā€” she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy namedā€”” “Yeah, sure ā€” you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that Iā€™m on the phone with you now, after all thatā€™s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didnā€™t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. Thereā€™s not a case of that. He wasnā€™t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had ā€” if that were what the accusation involved ā€” the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. Iā€™m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, ā€œYou know, itā€™s not this, itā€™s thatā€? Because ā€” let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. TimesĀ piece, thatā€™s what it lacked. Thatā€™s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
