What are the odds on Wicker Man pulling off a longshot? That movie OWNED.

  2. pete d says:

The critics have got to be kidding about Water. What moronic drivel it is. Why should human misery and degradation be wrapped in such a beautiful package. I am cynical about this category and the dreck that gets nominated but I don’t think even the superannuated Academy voters will be fooled by Water. Surely, the Algerian entry will be a finalist.

  3. Mark F. says:

I don’t see Babel getting a BP nomination. 5th slot is between U93 and LMS.

Nice to see Water finally get some love. That’s gotta be my favorite so far for the year. At this point I am more interested in seeing the foreign language films than the best picture films.

  5. jeffmcm says:

Oh, absolutely. The only movie I’m really looking forward to seeing for the rest of this year directed by an American is Inland Empire; all the rest are by furriners (Cuaron, Del Toro, Zhang, Tykwer, whoever this Lives of Others guy is).

  6. EDouglas says:

See, I think Little Miss Sunshine will get in because it’s hard to pick just one actor to support and SAG is likely to nom it for ensemble. At this point, Letters from Iwo Jima is The Thin Red Line…will get directing and writing nods but no acting (Sorry, Ken)

  7. I can’t speak to the other foreign film nominees, but I saw PANS LABYRINTH the other night and it’s brilliant, gorgeous, creepy, gross, allegorical and downright thrilling. I hope it becomes a minor hit because del Toro is a badass.

  8. little_miss_moonshine says:

And GDT is directing so many more complex elements than just Penelope Cruz in butt pads. Besides, Volver hinges on Cruz’s singing scene and that’s not even Cruz singing the song. She’s dubbed.

Dreamgirls brought the house down at LACMA tonight. after tonight I’m with Dave thinking that 14 nominations are a definite possibility, though I could see it missing out on Makeup before any of the other craft categories. I don’t think Patience has a chance of being nominated, but Love you I Do and Listen were outstanding.
and it’s ridiculous that Beyonce is being promoted as the lead, especially considering the content of the film. she could get a nomination if she were supporting.
Jamie Foxx gives what I’m deciding is one of my favorite male performances of the year, I’ll never understand why he’s generated no buzz from this, other than that it’s a showcase for the girls. so people aren’t noticing how good he is.
I don’t see how Eddie Murphy can lose.
I think they’ll pick up about 10 awards, losing director, screenplay, makeup and song (losing to itself).

i just want to point out that 14 nominations is as many as Titanic or All About Eve got – a record.

  11. bipedalist says:

Dreamgirls could have the most noms going into the race. It needs to pick up some steam in the writing dept. in order to do that. Here’s how I think it COULD go down with locks:
    Dreamgirls – 10
    picture
    director
    supporting actress, supporting actor
    song
    costumes
    editing
    cinematography
    sound
    art direction
(maybes) – supporting actress, actress, sound editing, another song nomination
    Departed – 8
    picture,
    actor, supporting actor, supporting actor
    director
    screenplay
    editing
    Score
(maybe – cinematography, sound, sound editing)
    Babel – 8
    picture
    director
    screenplay
    supporting actor, supporting actress
    editing
    score
    cinematography
    (maybe: editing)
    The Queen – 7
    picture
    director
    screenplay
    actress
    supporting actor
    editing
    score
    (maybe: cinematography)
    Iwo Jima – 7
    Picture
    director
    screenplay
    editing
    cinematography
    sound
(maybes: actor, supporting actor, sound editing, score, art direction)
    If its nominated for pic…
    Little Miss Sunshine – 4
    picture
    screenplay
    supporting actor, supporting actress
    (maybes: director)
    United 93 – 4
    picture
    screenplay
    director
    editing
    (maybes: cinematography, score)
Eastwood’s Flags will come into play somewhere, whether it’s a double directing nod or a screenplay or in the tech categories. It won’t be shut out. Hard to say, of course, how it will go but it seems likely Dreamgirls will be the most nominated of the bunch, even without a screenplay nod.

  12. Cadavra says:

Opinions, everyone: Murphy’s status as a jerk is well-known and lengthy. If this paternity thing with Scary Spice continues to metastasize (and he continues to act like an asshole about it), does anyone think it’ll piss off enough people to deny him a nomination? Wouldn’t be the first time someone was punished for off-screen antics.

  13. movielocke says:

I realize that 14 is tying the record, I wouldn’t be surprised to see 13 (missing makeup) or 15 (Beyonce surprising by taking a nomination from Cruz or Winslet). I really don’t care how many nominations it gets, it’s a terrifically well made very enjoyable film and that’s all I really care about, my family, friends and I will be going to see it the 29th or 30th and we will have an absolute blast, what else matters?
I think Dreamgirls will take both those elusive sound nominations (that kept Fellowship of the Ring from tying Titanic and All About Eve) because there are five nominees in each category this year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Visual Effects branch change their rules to go to five nominees next year as well rather than having a bakeoff, it will be slightly ridiculous for them to be the only category (along with Makeup) with 3 nominees.
I would expect Dreamgirls to match or surpass Chicago’s or a Beautiful Mind’s gross when all is said and done. This movie will have spectacular legs.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
