The Love Guru Attacks

In the last two months, I have gotten about 3 e-mails a week from a man who seems to actually be Hindu chaplain Rajan Zed, attacking The Love Guru and either pushing or “reporting” support for various calls to stop or change the film.
I don’t get it.
As far as I know, they haven’t even seen the movie. But there you go. We haven’t run any of these e-mails on MCN or further pursued the issue, since there seems to be very little traction or any reaosnable argument. There was a spike in interest when the British Film Institute released a statement last week that said, “Please rest assured that the BFI will not be screening this title nor will be involved with a possible release of it.

lex– i spent the afternoon talking with mena suvari and stuart gordon about their movie, ‘stuck’…… i mention this only because, while i was watching the screener, i kept thinking how much you would probably say it ‘owned’…….
keep an eye out for it, i think it’s your cup of meat…….

  5. scooterzz says:

oh, and on topic — has anyone else been skeeved out by ‘the
love guru’ trailers where myers’ head is cgi’d on the body of a ten year old?……yikes!

  6. LexG says:

    Thanks for the tip, Scooterzz!
    Mena is awesome. She OWNS.

  9. leahnz says:

    hey lex,
it’s usually the guys who feel the need to constantly refer to their dicks that have the teeny little wieners…

  10. scooterzz says:

hmmmmm……so sorry to see your comments reduced to size refs…..seems like a cheap shot……
it’s actually been my experience that the guys who constantly reference their dick, have a huge dick…….nobody actually references a ‘small’ dick…..
i’m usually with ya, leah…..not this time though…

  11. leahnz says:

sorry to hear that scoot, i’m just taking the piss…reading about lex’s dick on a daily basis is a bit tiresome. he certainly can dish it out, i figured he could take it. didn’t mean to offend the men-folk or their wonderful dangly bits šŸ™‚

  12. scooterzz says:

yeah…a huge fan of ‘dangly bits’…..we need more celebration there….

  13. leahnz says:

totally scoot, dangly bits rule, i’m ‘for’ them! i honestly meant no offence…to be honest, lex has offended me as a female so often i didn’t even think about it, just wanted him to be more discreet about his boners…

  14. LexG says:

    ALBA OWNS. KNOW IT.

  15. Clearly, he was not offended.

  16. Nicol D says:

This is one of those times where I think any supposed “controversy” might actually help. Unlike something like the Golden Compass which was marketed to children, controversy around The Love Guru might make it seem more cool to the teen crowd and young adults.
Because it looks godawful. I finally saw the trailer before Iron Man and I was stunned at how incompetant, unfunny and amateurish it looked. It looked about as high quality as a Police Academy sequel.
The irony is however, I do not believe Myers at all intended any offence. I have read and heard much about his personal antics but must also say that my significant other and I encountered him at a Toronto bar a few years back at festival time and approached him. He talked with us for nearly half and hour. Very unpretentious and seemingly very sincere. Perhaps professionally he is different, but I believe him when he says he meant no offence.
Myers is a comedian I really – want – to like…but damn… everything he has done since Austin Powers 1 and Shrek 1 I have loathed.
    Nice guy, though.

  17. messiahcomplexio says:

People are raving about Jessica Alba’s performance in the new movie…
    STARE
**** Alba gives her most believable performance to date as a bored movie star gazing vacantly into the camera. Roger Ebert-
Like a deer eye-fucking the headlights of an oncoming semi- Peter travers rolling stone.
Hotter than 5 princess lea’s in slave garb “going down” on a bucket of greasy fries- Harry Knowles Aint it cool-
Where’s are all CGI? I have expectations. Jeffrey Wells- hollywood elsewhere-
I would have preferred more blinking- David Poland Movie city news.

  18. MarkVH says:

messiah, pretty sure that’s the gd funniest thing I’ve read all day. Nice work.
And Nicol, I’ve heard similar reports about Myers from folks who’ve met him “in real life.” I actually find that the more he’s moved out of the limelight (at least on-screen), the more affection I have for him. He comes across as very non-Hollywood and as a guy who just really, really wants to make people laugh.
And maybe it’s this general feeling that’s coloring my feelings toward Love Guru, but I don’t think it looks that abominable. Not particularly funny, but not any worse than either of the Austin Powers sequels.
But a lot of time has passed since those movies, and I can’t help but wonder if Myers’ brand of comedy is really relevant any more. The years since his last live-action appearance have given us Borat, the Apatow deluge (which I’m not a fan of), Wedding Crashers (which I am) the Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg brand (priceless), and Will Ferrell oversaturation (funny when working with Adam McKay, not really with anyone else). The question will be whether not live-action Myers can compete in the current climate. I’m not so sure. I hope I’m wrong.

  19. Direwolf says:

Off topic and probably menaingless but worth watching….Caspian very slightly exceeded Lion/With/Wardrobe on its first Monday. I also read somewhere that a few of the countries were Caspian was released outperformed the first film on the first weekend. I guess the success of the summer vs. winter holiday strategy is going to be revealed over the next ten days.

  20. christian says:

I imagine there would be people today offended by Peter Sellers in THE PARTY, which is simply a sincere beautiful character piece in which Hrundi is the hero.

  21. repeatfather says:

You don’t need to see the whole film to know it’s offensive to Indian people and Hindus. I was wincing during the trailer that was attached to Iron Man.
It’s reminiscent of the depictions of Japanese people circa WWII. It’s hard to believe such a film could have been greenlighted nowadays.

  22. SteveWarren says:

I’ve been getting Zed’s press releases too, and it seems like one of the early ones mentioned he has a documentary coming out this year, so maybe the whole thing is his way of making a name for himself to promote his own product.
I was repulsed by the “Love Guru” trailer long before Zed started his campaign. I’m not a big Myers fan anyway, and this just struck me as painfully unfunny in a retro way. If anyone paid attention to Zed it would probably only help the movie, so let’s be glad whoever’s parceling out those 15 minutes of fame is working from an alphabetical list.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” ā€” some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it ā€” I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury ā€” he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” ā€” and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging ā€” I was with her at that moment ā€” she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy namedā€”” “Yeah, sure ā€” you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that Iā€™m on the phone with you now, after all thatā€™s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didnā€™t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. Thereā€™s not a case of that. He wasnā€™t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had ā€” if that were what the accusation involved ā€” the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. Iā€™m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, ā€œYou know, itā€™s not this, itā€™s thatā€? Because ā€” let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. TimesĀ piece, thatā€™s what it lacked. Thatā€™s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
