Hollywood Reporter On Chasen

10:50p – Corrected to reflect the Hollywood Reporter’s sourcing.

I just want to say… I don’t even mind that The Hollywood Reporter is covering the Ronni Chasen murder. They didn’t pay someone to TMZ them information from inside the Beverly Hills Police Department. They spoke to a Beverly Hills city official who, inappropriately, told the paper what he took away from his or her briefing on the matter.

But is that better or worse? They took second hand information that was, with the exception of one or two minor facts (thank GOD we dragged Buddy Hackett into it!), the entire story was conjecture… which is admitted throughout the story. So why run the story?

“The Hollywood Reporter has learned that police have video of a car pulling up to Ronni Chasen’s car and firing into it on the street.” That is the only real news here… though this story is not 100% clear on whether THR things that is a fully realized fact.

So why run the story?

The audience that really cares about this story are people who knew Ronni… and it is seriously irresponsible to take one tiny piece of information (the the gunfire came from another car that pulled up next to Ronni’s car) and a working theory (that this was planned) and to spin it into a headline much more salacious than the facts.

“Ronni Chasen Killing Planned” suggests some kind of direct intent to kill Ronni Chasen and not someone who was in the wrong car or in the wrong place at the wrong moment. It suggests more than a theory. Maybe this will turn out to be a planned killing, though few people seem to believe there is a candidate out there who would want Ronni dead. But right now, the theory, as reported, does not connect Ronni and the shooter in any way. And the 3rd paragraph acknowledges this… which is only neccessary because the headline is so misleading.

“Organized” is a much more accurate word. Assuming this report is accurate and they saw a car pull up next to Ronni’s car and fire the shots, it is an organized shooting. But unless there is a lot more made clear on that tape than this, there is zero insight into intent so far.

It may seem like semantics and it is. The Hollywood Reporter is maximizing itself by semantically overstating the tiny bit of information they have allegedly received from a source.

This distinction matters.

Agreed. That article and that headline are saying two different things.

  2. chris says:

This story is pretty tame and does nothing to sully this woman’s name. PLanned or not she is still a victim. Also murders are so rare in Beverly Hills it’s a plausible theory it was planned. Speculation in the press about the why if a high profile murder is common. I also fail to see where the story suggests anything was bought much less from cops. That’s a serious allegation to throw around.

  3. Josh Dickey says:

Can’t be a shocking news story in this town without some good, old-fashioned David Poland indignation toward the media, right? And by old-fashioned I mean IT’S OLD-FASHIONED.

  4. Matt Belloni says:

Hi David, I just wanted to let you know that THR did not pay for any information in that story, nor does THR ever pay for news. Read the story again. It doesn’t cite a police source, it cites a Beverly Hills city official who has been briefed by the chief of police. And you could have easily called someone here to ask before you made such an incendiary accusation. As someone who knew Ronni, I’m pretty offended you would suggest we are practicing “scumbag journalism” or sensationalizing the investigation into her killing. But that’s your opinion, so whatever. However, please correct the statement suggesting that THR bought information from the Beverly Hills Police, it’s just not true. Thanks.

Oy… someone from The Wrap commenting on what is appropriate.

    You’re kidding, right?

Your outlet’s coverage is scummy, not edgy or fresh or even smart. It’s embarrassing. And trust me, the town is already discussing it and under the circumstances, is unlikely to forget.

And ethics are not old-fashioned. Maybe when you grow up, you’ll figure that out.

  6. Tom says:

I was wondering how long before you had to take back the “THR paid for their information” slur. Ironic given your righteous anger over unsubstantiated allegations.

  7. Don Murphy says:

    David
It’s been a few days, where are the Chasen jokes. Murdering a defenseless woman is as funny as a woman in a coma, right Kingo?

  8. christian says:

Welcome To The New Media. Film At 11.

  9. David Poland says:

A little, Tom. But do keep in mind, none of the people at THR have addressed their shitty behavior in any way. Do read the LA Times version of the same info today… someone on record and no self-serving hype. You know, journalism.

  10. David Poland says:

Don… you know what’s really sick about your shite? You are abusing Ronni’s memory and the woman in a coma to achieve some obsessive goal about me. You just look for the cheapest shot you can take at me and take it, regardless of who else you need to drag into it.

As I explained however many months ago, I had no intent to comment specifically on that woman who was injured on that set or to launch an investigation of Mr. Bay. I was fine copping to bad taste and noted that I would withdraw the poll had anyone involved been in touch, aside from you, who I felt and feel is using a tragic event as a cheap way of attacking me for whatever your secret and personal reasons are. I have never heard from anyone about this and have been in touch with almost every institution involved since the poll ran.

This is all about you, Don. Post whatever idiotic comments you like. I’m not banning you. But do stop pretending that there is anything I could do to get you to stop the obsession.

  11. Don Murphy says:

My replies to Kingo are in bold
Don… you know what’s really sick about your shite? for those who joined us late, there was an accident on the set of Transformers 3. A woman ended up in a Coma. Poland a week later made a joke as part of a poll in which he blamed an accident (which happened accidentally) on Michael Bay. He thought it was FUNNY. You are abusing Ronni’s memory and the woman in a coma to achieve some obsessive goal about me. No David- YOU MADE THE JOKE and haven’t attempted an apology You just look for the cheapest shot you can take at me and take it, regardless of who else you need to drag into it. I am not dragging anyone anywhere. You made the rude fucking joke because you are very sick. It wasn’t funny. Nor is murder.

As I explained however many months ago, I had no intent to comment specifically on that woman who was injured on that set or to launch an investigation of Mr. Bay. I was fine copping to bad taste Mr Poland NEVER did any of these things and cannot point owhere he did this. He is a liar and a poseur and noted that I would withdraw the poll had anyone involved been in touch, aside from you, who I felt and feel is using a tragic event as a cheap way of attacking me for whatever your secret and personal reasons are. I have never heard from anyone about this and have been in touch with almost every institution involved since the poll ran. Poland thinks that because, say Warner Brothers, doesn’t say he is a fucking asshole for all those Zach Snyder lies they don’t think he is. They do David, they do

This is all about you, Don. Post whatever idiotic comments you like. I’m not banning you. you cannot ban the truth, you know that But do stop pretending that there is anything I could do to get you to stop the obsession.no obsession. You are bad. deal with it.

  12. Foamy Squirrel says:

    Wait… which Zach Snyder lies?

  13. David Poland says:

Don, you’re just factually wrong. Not that you care.

My instinct is to respond in detail to each false statement you use to attack me, but then I realize I am just feeding your sickness.

It is a fool’s errand to try to speak logic to a crazy person. It doesn’t really matter how I respond to your demands – and I have, privately – you will keep acting on your delusional relationship with reality because – and I believe you really believe this – you have been aggrieved… and it has jack all to do with the Transformers accident. This most recent drama started weeks before that dumb poll.

Worse, you have dragged Kim Voynar, Christine Vachon, Gabriela Cedillo, and Ronni Chasen – all innocent bystanders – into your drama about me. Misogynist much?

Of course, you would have me attack Michael Bay in public to, allegedly, calm your ire against me. Maybe you are an equal opportunity asshole.

You don’t care who (or who’s memory) is in the way, so long as you can try to damage your target, which at the moment, is me. And I still don’t know why, except for a delusional notion about Kim attacking your wife on a bulletin board and me not 100% accepting your number on Transformers after I had been told it was something else by people who were actually closer to the production than you. Of course, Kim didn’t attack your wife and I never wrote about the Transformers number again after you so emphatically claimed your number to be The Number. But never mind that… to you, I am a piece of shit and you will hurt others if you think it will hurt me.

Your a casual sadist. The most horrifying kind.

  14. Sarah says:

I definitely am not up on any of this. I do not like anyone saying bad stuff about David though because I just know and feel it is wrong and I don’t even know him. So Don stop your junk .. stop your idiocy and junk.

I am curious though why this article which arose immediately after Ronnie’s murder – the first article the next morning that I saw … has just been totally ignored. I do not think it is written at all in any crazy way and it certainly is a whole lot more believable than this being some passionate act of a deranged person who was not cast. Which is now the thing it seems to me that is being highlighted now. Yes .. I know .. I sound like a conspiracy theorist. To suggest that someone might be planting casting director’s having had death threats made to them – to detour the direction of the investigation off of what this reporter for the San Diego Examiner is talking about. There is a whole bunch said in his article but I think more people should be talking about IT than all of the other rubbish that is being spoken about.

    http://www.examiner.com/fine-arts-in-san-diego/verizon-security-surfaces-important-clue-ronnie-chasen-shooting

  15. Sarah says:

Now I guess I know why no one has paid attention to that article .. I really now tried to decipher it … geez the guy goes subject to subject to subject and I could barely keep any coherence with what his track was. It is nothing derogatory about Ronnie. It is nothing about her at all personally. It does mention GPS tracking and Steve Cooley of Los Angeles and police departments and death units that might be called up by policemen in departments BUT none of it seems to make sense to me or make sense as to why he mentions Ronnie at the end and her client Claire Danes and the idea of tall menacing men in the background. Ugh. Sorry to have posted it. But it is horrible what happened and it certainly is more like a professional contract than any passionate act of vengeance done by someone who has not gotten an acting job.

May her energy go on to places more blissful and wonderful.

  16. Don Murphy says:

    David
I have never attacked Ronni Chasen. Ever. You are a cowardly fuck for even trying to spin it that way. I don’t even know the woman.
YOU MADE THE JOKE about Cedillo. I am defending her AGAINST YOU. What a twisted human being you are Poland. No misogyny there, you well known homophobe.
You pay Kim Voynar’s Fritos bill, but I have never dragged her into anything. Laughed at her and about her, yes.
And Vachon is not a human being, she is a snake pretending to be a human.

You are a piece of shit. And if I didn’t have proof, the very fact that you lied and twisted reality in order to “win” your battle has clinched it.

And Now Back to our regular installment of “Kingo Poland explains why he knows everything better than everything else. ”

  17. Shillfor Alanhorn says:

There’s a part of me that wants to believe that Don Murphy is actually an investor in MCN and that he and Poland stir up this war like a pair of WWF wrestlers to drum up page views when things get dull. The truth, however, is probably a lot more interesting….

  18. David Poland says:

Don, now you’re just lying without restraint (and with legal liability).

    Homophobe? Are you insane?

If you heard that someone thought I was gay, that would be familiar. But a homophobe? Completely up your own ass on that one.

You went through one of these periods of hating me before and blamed it, when push came to shove, 100% on Kim and my employment of her, assuming I knew about the affront (an affront that never happened).

And yeah, you brought Ronni’s name into this, even though I have been writing about how her murder impacted me and how callous some media has been about it all week. It’s a cheap, weak tactic and utterly disrespectful of her, as well as my clear feelings.

You didn’t even know the women! So shut the fuck up about her! But no. You use her to poke at me, you pig. And you don’t even understand how disgusting that is. You can’t see past your own obsession.

And you know what, Don… going back to the issue you keep claiming is motivating your bs… as I have told you repeatedly, if you had just sent me a note when you saw the dumb poll and told me that you thought it was offensive, it would have been gone in minutes. If ANYONE had sent me a note telling me that they thought it was offensive or pointing out that the woman was in a coma and still at risk, it would have come down. But being the self-important mule you are, you led with threats… against me and my business and ultimately, my family’s welfare. And I still don’t think you give a shit about that woman… only about attacking me.

Do us all a favor and get off of my lawn.

(PS to Shill… Don would never invest in me… he doesn’t see the endgame… and can’t understand that I don’t do anything just to get to an endgame. And I would never go into business with him because he is too erratic to ever trust.)

  19. Don Murphy says:

I am utterly disrespectful of your feelings. I admit that. I don’t give a shit about them. You must be respectful to get respect. You started this, without knowing the endgame. I figured the ending out months ago.

In this case, I merely asked you when you were going to start joking about this tragedy, like you did the last one.

It shows her no disrespect. I didn’t make a joke about her. I asked when YOU would.

And Porky, we established in previous posts who is the pig here and it ain’t me.

Listen to yourself ramble. It is a sign of a degenerate mind gone wrong. You basically state “Yeah the joke was way out of line but if you had only kissed my ass on the right ingrown pimple I would have taken it down.” You know who you are Poland? No one.

I made no threats. You have no idea what I have actually done so far- but it has been substantial. As far as attacking business, your behavior came miles before my own.

    Legal Liability?
Listen! Listen! Do you hear that David? It is the sound of my lawyers pissing on the heads of yours and laughing.

  20. David Poland says:

Your a liar, Don. If you don’t know it, you’re a delusional liar.

“You wouldn’t be the first to suffer badly for underestimating me, Sir. The last one who did (back in 2007) just had to pay me a boatload of money.”

“I’ll stop “spamming” your site with the truth, but trust me I never stop behind the scenes with those that do what you have done. A threat? Not to do anything illegal. But yeah, enjoy your “joke” and have a good sleep.”

Geez, Don… “You started this, without knowing the endgame. I figured the ending out months ago” isn’t a direct threat… but it suggests one, no?

But let’s get past your lies and threats. Who cares? No one expects you to be truthful. Or to be able to comprehend that if you really thought I wrote something hurtful, you’d want it to be removed and apologized for, not used as an empty threat against me.

Please do let us in on how you think I attacked you. Come on… tell us what this is really all about. You’ll feel much better when you just tell the truth. Maybe you’re just shy because you’re not used to doing it. Maybe it will be awkward, as new things people try often are. But really, you’ll feel better.

  21. David Poland says:

And Don… the funny thing… I am STILL being respectful of you. Much as I am swinging back at you, I am still keeping it above the belt… because I don’t need cheap shots or to hurt others who have the sad history of being associated with you to make my case. But that’s all you really have, isn’t it?

  22. Don Murphy says:

“because I don’t need cheap shots or to hurt others who have the sad history of being associated with you to make my case”

The greatest quote ever from someone who doesn’t get it and never will.

Good luck Dave, you’ll be needing it.

  23. Jeffrey Boam's Doctor says:

Well delete mine as well DP as it makes no sense now. So does this mean Don murph the surf Murphy is banned? Even after you said you wouldn’t? Or did you (hopefully) kiss and make up.

  24. David Poland says:

Don agreed with Foamy that keeping the exchange up was in no one’s interest. Yours is down… I think it will say, when you are signed in, “Your Comment Is Awaiting Moderation,” which is pretty ironic when considering the overall exchange.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
