Added Cars 2 Note…

There is ZERO benefit to this movie being in 3D, aside from cash flow.

There were, maybe, three shots in the film where I really even noticed the 3D.

I love Pixar. I believe in Pixar. But in this case, it’s just a cash grab.

Really, I expect more of Lasseter, who is a true lover of the form.

Has Pixar done anything productive with 3D yet? Up and Toy Story 3 didn’t get good reviews for that addition.

On the plus side, the more I hear about Brave the more Miyazaki-esque it’s sounding by the minute.

I noticed at my local theater that CARS 2 is playing on 3 screens in 2D but only 1 in 3D. Is the bloom truly off the 3D rose or does Disney think too many of the little kids and their parents just don’t want to mess with the hassle of 3D?

  4. Paul MD (Stella's Boy) says:

When we go see Cars 2, it will be in 2D. My son would never wear the glasses and there’s no point in paying $4 extra per ticket. I have to imagine many parents feel the same way and will do the same thing.

The is a brief tease for Brave attached to Cars 2.

  6. Chadillac says:

Pixar has lost it! Tell The Daily Beast to start writing the trend piece.

  7. For what it’s worth, one of the local 6-screen Regals is playing Cars 2 on one screen. That screen has three 2D showtimes and two 3D showtimes. If I were an optomist, I’d presume that Disney knows that the core audience for Cars 2 (multi-child families) are far less liekly to want to spend $15-20 per ticket and scheduled accordingly. I would love to know the overall 2D/3D split this weekend. I’d bet that there are more 2D screens than 3D this time around…

Again, it’s the studios that have ruined 3D. There have been many films that have utilized 3D wonderfully since “Avatar”….”Hubble,” “Piranha,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Jackass 3,” “Cave of Forgotten Dreams,” “Legend of the Guardians,” hell even “Drive Angry” and “Step Up 3.” But studios needlessly inserting into blockbuster movies like Alice, Clash of the Titans, Narnia, Toy Story, Cars, Panda 2, Pirates 4, Green Hornet, Green Lantern, Tron, Yogi Bear etc…have probably ruined the format. Tranny 3, Captain America and Potter 8 won’t help.

  9. SamLowry says:

Yes, it’s an issue with little kids and the glasses. Taking my young’un to Toy Story 3D was a big mistake, but an unavoidable one because the theater wasn’t offering 2D.

Half of the blame for “ruining” 3D falls on the technology and the exhibitors. I couldn’t help but notice that TS3 looked rather dark and moody in 3D, yet the DVD looks bright and dandy.

  10. LexG says:

Wait, is Captain America in 3D?

I honestly had no idea. Is that maybe a mistake and it’s just 2D? If it’s in 3, they’ve done NOTHING to promote it as such.

  11. JKill says:

I saw the CAPTAIN AMERICA in 3-D trailer today, and was sort of shocked it was in 3-D. They’re not giving that aspect of the release the same push they did for Thor, certainly.

I actually thought the 3D in Tron fit, and was done well.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
