Interested to see (GG) where the acting noms go… Gotta figure Clooney and Pitt are absolute shoo-ins since the Globes love the big stars, and that Bechir and Shannon are out… probably Oldman out too… Fassbender in or not? In actress, I think Charlize will fare better with GG than with SAG. But again, is it because of the performance (my favorite actress performance of the year), OR because they want STARS?

I always think it’s the case at the Oscars or any of these races where Best Actor is so close to call, and that they could go to 6 or even 8 nominees and still have all these different, layered incredible performances… Maybe just my natural prejudice or bogus acting background: But look at those guys– Clooney, DiCaprio, Fassbender, Dujardin, Bechir, Oldman, Shannon, Harrelson… How do you judge that, or say one is “better” than the other? Same goes for Actress and the supporting categories too, but as usual, that’s like eight performance that is each so perfect in its own way, it’s almost arbitrary for anyone to consider one “better” than the others (only Daniel Day-Lewis can objectively be called BETTER than anyone on a consistent basis.)

What Michael Shannon does in TAKE SHELTER is mind-blowing, holding this tense, pinprick-quiet movie together even through its lulls with coiled intensity, then doing what he does in the last half-hour… But DiCaprio STEAMROLLING over everybody and conveying all that paranoid repression and bitterness and smallness… and what Clooney does isn’t easy either, or Pitt, but then Dujardin conveys all this pathos AND does old-timey acting without seeming precious or cutesy… All those dudes just fucking rule, it’s the other category from Picture where they should just expand it out to ten.

And on the actress front, Charlize by a mile for me, but still Elizabeth Olsen and Kirsten Dunst seemed so raw and real, that sight unseen I can’t IMAGINE how another OTT Streep showcase doesn’t seem like camp revue compared to that revelation-type intensity.

Also in unrelated news I think Charlize, Kirsten and Olsen are all more physically appealing than Streep.

Fingers crossed for Shailene Woodley, absolutely and in every way my favorite, FAVORITE since K-Stew, the first woman in six years to even APPROACH that feeling I felt when I first saw Kristen.

Actually Shailene may be even cuter.

  2. sanj says:

watched hugo in 2d … good acting . good computer graphics but 2 hours long …could have cut by 15 minutes .

there’s no price drop for 3d movies ….even for 1 day.
so that’s why lots of people hit the 2d screens . cheaper.

Fright Night’s Sandra Vergara on g4 tv …

    funny 5 minute interview ..

  3. bulldog68 says:

Does Pixar get an automatic nomination? They picked the universally panned Cars 2 over the universally agreed much better Kung Fu Panda 2. I call bullshit.

  4. Paul D/Stella says:

Callie Thorne in Necessary Roughness? Is that show still on? Disappointed that Ides of March got so much love. I liked it OK and still found it to be a huge disappointment. Go Tilda.

  5. MarkVH says:

Cue “Golden-Globes-are-so-boring-and-don’t-matter-to-Oscar-at-all” post featuring an oh-so-hilarious allusion to sleeping in the headline from DP in 3…2…1…

  6. spassky says:

director clooney for ides of march…

    berenice for supporting…

    best picture…

the only thing I like about this are the actress nominations…

let’s hope brendan fraser does another weird quasi-coked-out-clap to brighten things up.

  7. Danella Isaacs says:

Yay Jessica Lange for AMERICAN HORROR STORY (I know that’s TV, but still… Stunning work.)

  8. movieman says:

    Ugh.
    Still no Kirsten Dunst.
But at least Viggo Mortensen snuck in there.
The lack of “Tattoo” recognition continues to mystify me.
Was there a meeting of some secret awards-giving cabal where they all decided to snub Fincher this year?
Can’t say that I saw all that “Ides of March” love coming. But I don’t expect it to be duplicated by Oscar voters.
My happiest surprise was the complete shut out of “Loud/Close.”
    Maybe there’s hope after all.
(Guess Globers don’t like Muppets. Not even a token song nomination. Geez!)

  9. Paul D/Stella says:

Is something like Dragon Tattoo too dark for Globes voters? And yeah Lange is spectacular on American Horror Story.

Also good for Idris Elba and Chris Cornell. Nice.

  10. JS Partisan says:

BD, Cars 2 is still Pixar, and the HFP went with Pixar. You do know though that the Golden Globes are bullshit, right? None of these awards matter, they are basically nothing but a reason to get TV and Movie people together in a room to drink. That’s it.

If we are talking about animation, figuratively, then we all know Rango should have that Oscar in the bottle.

  11. spassky says:

“…they are basically nothing but a reason to get TV and Movie people together in a room to drink. That’s it.”

Totally worth it. RE: coked out brendan fraser

  12. hcat says:

As someone who loved Downton Abbey glad to see that it got some more love. But the television comedy section is woeful. I’ve caught some of the recent Modern Family and New Girl episodes to see what the buzz is about and while they are pleasantly engaging there are some much better choices out there (Louie and Parks and Rec being the best examples). Sort of telling that all the networks got shut out of the drama and miniseries categories, looks like television has followed the film industry belief that quality fare is now only for a niche audience.

Is Marilyn a musical/comedy? everything I have seen about seems to suggest drama drama drama.

And that best actor drama category might be the best looking group of nominees for any award ever.

  13. David Poland says:

MarkVH… you assumed I would get out of bed for the nominations, apparently.

  14. sdp says:

Breaking Bad wasn’t nominated for drama series. Joke category.

  15. bulldog68 says:

Yeah JS, I know. But its fun venting. It also just gives DP more accelerant to call hogwash on all pre-oscar awards. I’m also surprised there was no Spielberg nom. Seems Clooney took it cause no one even talked about Clooney as a possibility in this category.

Sorry there was no Harry Potter love as well, especially in the supporting actor for Alan Rickman, even though I don’t know who I would have left out from the current list.

Does anyone know why there is no category for Best Supporting in Comedy/Musical when there is a comparative for TV? For some reason I never thought of that before, but only realized it when there was no nom for Melissa Mccarthy

  16. sanj says:

Rooney Mara on David Letterman – David asks a lot

  17. torpid bunny says:

The G.I. Joe trailer is pretty disappointing. I’m ok with the Rock as a G.I. Joe, seems like a good idea. But where the hell is Cobra? All I see is Storm Shadow, who’s ok but is basically a little punk. Where is baroness? WHERE THE HELL IS COBRA COMMANDER?? The guy was in every episode for a reason. I want Serpentor and Golobulous and all I’m seeing is some lame conspiracy story (already done in A-Team) and some dancing ninjas. Also, the Kanye glasses and batman latex on Snake Eyes are really distracting.

Basically, the starting point for any G.I. Joe movie has to be this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pz59tFR2KMs

  18. Don R. Lewis says:

The Rock isn’t “G.I. Joe,” Bruce Willis is(isn’t he?) and I’m with you that the trailer is disappointing. In fact, I think it looks totally humdrum and lame. Surprised the geekosphere is going nuts for it. Oh wait, no I’m not.

  19. arisp says:

Cobra Commander was in the trailer, though I had to pause the video to see him.

Also no Tree Of Life = joke.

  20. sanj says:

gi joe – gave too much away in trailer – there’s a 99% it won’t get best picture oscar and the oscar bloggers don’t care ..but all the geek sites and comic con will go crazay for this ….

lots of actors tell DP in the dp/30 they have other skills. mostly music or photography aside from acting but DP never
goes futher with this and does a whole dp/30 based on those …i want DP to mix it up next year even if they are super famous actors or not .
DP can easily get some world exclusive nobody else has …

  21. JS Partisan says:

Yeah, Cobra Commander is right there between Zartan and Firefly. Seriously, that trailer is trailer of the year, and hopefully is selling a GI JOE movie that’s not silly camp.

  22. sanj says:

those guys from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy got more dp/30 ..they really want some sort of movie award don’t they

DP sure got the exclusive cause i don’t see these guys
the director and other guy showing up on talk shows …

will they make another movie and show up next year ?

more people coming from the uk just to do interviews ..
DP really needs to take his private jet and go to the uk and film every actor there .. plus if the queen of england ain’t doing anything she can get a dp/30 ..

also Tom Cruise won’t do a dp/30 cause Oprah found him first. he’s loyal.

a lot of smaller indie directors are loyal to DP cause
well…nobody else is going to interview them .

  23. Krillian says:

Seems like Tinker Tailor’s whole strategy was to market around Gary Oldman getting some nominations and now it’s not panning out.

  24. sanj says:

this is mostly for DP – about the business math behind comedy … read all the comments.

Do Not Steal From Louis C.K.

  25. sanj says:

watched a few episodes of i hate my teenage daughter on fox .. bad family sitcom ..bad writing . had acting .

the stanards of comedy are so much lower on network tv …

i don’t know how they get away with it …

whitney / man up and teenage daughter shouldn’t get any tv awards for anything ..which means none of the actors
will end up wit a dp/30 …thats like 20 actors crossed
of DP’s list …unless DP finds them funny…but DP
don’t review tv shows as much.

maybe the only stuff reviewing is on hbo / fx / showtime. the rest don’t matter unless they have
    a big name creator …

  26. Don R. Lewis says:

I watched the Louis CK $5 special last night and it was typically AWESOME. I love the guy. But I was reading that the special cost him $200,000 to make. Um….whaaaaaat? The only way that’s possible is if he BOUGHT all the equipment rather than rented it or paid himself $50 an hour to write the material over a year. Or he got ripped off. Plus, that Beacon show was one of two SOLD OUT shows at 2500 seats. Somethings off with that math. The cool thing is he “made” $500,000 but I’m not sure that’s all together or after “expenses.”

  27. Paul D/Stella says:

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/12/15/idUS227480331920111215

Discusses how much he’s made (so far) as well as how much it cost to make and why.

  28. Don R. Lewis says:

Huh…still seems off. The Beacon seats 2500 people and he sold out both shows at $35 a head. That’s $175,000 but I’m not sure how much the theater takes in that estimate. I honestly don’t see how a website that’s as bare bones as that one is cost $32,000 either.

But, whatever. It’s a really funny special and the best $5 I’ve spent on entertainment in a while. More power to the guy as well. Imagine what could come from artists who are bigger than Louis or, more importantly, have bigger ideas and more “out there” ideas that the studio system wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole.

  29. sanj says:

Louis CK could have gone with netflix / amazon … saved a bunch of money and got even more people to view his video.

i’m sure DP could have taped the video for 10,000 and Louis could have saved even more money.

Louis could have given the video to a major portal – like msn or yahoo … millions would watch for free and they
can make money off ads like a movie comedy ad …

now other comics are going to copy Louis and while not that famous probably could make 25,000 or so …

watched fright night 2011 – last 15 minutes saved this movie for me…. just not scary at all.

  30. Don R. Lewis says:

and the winner of the “Missing the Point Award: 2011” goes to….SANJ!

He didn’t want to pay middle men for something he could do himself.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
