    So…

Do any of you know the Madison?

  2. sanj says:

watched Killer Joe 2012 – i liked it – i was fine with the ending but i really liked every actor in the movie
director or actors going to get oscars ?

one of those movies the less you know about it the better..

  3. tbunny says:

I’m I losing it or does the guy in the looper trailer not look like j. gordon-levitt? This picture looks like a different person:

    http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1437247744/tt1276104

The eyes look different, maybe more open, and the lips seem fuller.

  4. spassky says:

    tbunny: Is that a joke?

Not trying to be a jerk, I just thought it was pretty obvious from the trailers. They used a prosthetic and some digital touch up to make him look more like bruce willis. Still doesn’t look like Willis, I wonder how affective it will be in the movie.

But Looper sure is looking good!

  5. tbunny says:

Not a joke, I was very confused. I guess that answers it.

  6. spassky says:

I guess that might be a good thing for the movie, but maybe bad for marketing…?

I don’t know. My personal opinion is that, while the film may be very very good, I just don’t think it will find it’s audience.

  7. Glamourboy says:

Thanks Dave, great wrap up to the festival. Amazing photograph. I feel like I really got some great insite into the festival this year, read about a lot of great movies and heard from some pretty cool talent….from several other movie sites. Hope you had fun.

  8. cadavra says:

JGL is very heavily made-up in LOOPER, but not to make him look more like Willis. In fact, I’m not sure why they did it.

The movie is remarkable, by the way. If this doesn’t make Rian Johnson an A-lister, I don’t know what will.

  9. bulldog68 says:

God that Lincoln trailer hits all the right notes. Just the trailer looks like an Academy frontrunner right now. It’s been seven years since he was nominated for directing Munich and thirteen years since he won for Saving Private Ryan. Maybe the Academy will think he’s due.

And stacking the deck with Daniel Day Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones, all Academy darlings, certainly doesn’t hurt.

  10. bulldog68 says:

Just looking back at last year’s nominees and it’s kind of amazing that War Horse got 6 noms for Art Direction, Cinematography, Music, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Picture of the Year, but no Director.

  11. movieman says:

Totally agree w/ you re: the “Lincoln” trailer, Bulldog.
    It literally gave me goose-bumps.
While Spielberg has an iffy record w/ this sort of material (“Amistad” anyone?), I’m thinking he could really hit it out of the ballpark this time.
    And DDL looks simply…astonishing.

My biggest concern is that it shares the exact same release trajectory as “J. Edgar” (a movie I loved btw) last year.
Different distrib, but everything else looks identical.

  12. Rashad says:

Why does Lex go through these phases where he protects his account? I know you’re reading this. Cut it out man.

  13. Hallick says:

The music in the trailer for “Lincoln” sounds like it was written for an old Academy Awards telecast. It is God Awful. It is God, The Devil, and Bob awful.

  14. lazarus says:

Despite the schmaltz overload, I’m somewhat looking forward to this. And I don’t consider myself much of a Spielberg fan.

That final bit of voiceover from DDL ending with him saying that “bleeding” line gave me chills. The man is as good as acting gets right now. And his work here appears to share little with his last two larger-than-life roles.

  15. sanj says:

    scifi fans…

just watched H+ Digital Series –

    16 episodes in 1 hour –

    – about people who have internet inside them and it gets shut down

    – huge cast – lots of english subtitles

    – from director Byran Singer

    – overall i was disappointed by the end…and there are more episodes to come – the acting is great – production is movie quality – the stories are just boring and slow .

    – some actors might break out from this into other roles in tv / movies …

    – first episode got 500,000 views – 16th episode got 10,000 … big drop

    – not expecting a dp/30 – cause DP don’t do web series even though it has real actors in it .

    – first episode is great so everybody watch — 7 minutes

  16. sanj says:

watched men in black 3 — i liked this one out of the series … my favorite actor was hat time travel dude –
so since Will Smith is too famous for a dp30 … i request a dp/30 with Michael Stuhlbarg … hopefully he’ll get an
oscar nomination one day and then DP will finally figure out that hes a good actor – he’s done a lot of tv series .. none of which i remember him in .

also i saw a tv special movie thing on lawless and while it was pretty short – i liked it better than the dp/30’s lawless …. kinda weird how MTV can beat DP in a simple interview about a complex history subject about drinking and family and guns.

see guys – i do like the dp/30’s but when i see some better interviews i do mention it …

also DP/30: For A Good Time Call.. interview was fine but this has got to be the worst background of the year …ugly curtains …

on a postive note the dp/30 Jennifer Lawrence is the highest viewed. DP should be promoting that everywhere…. DP should buy full page ads in variety and hollywood reporter … ” #1 Jennifer Lawerence interview ever”

  17. chris says:

I would bet money there was a Stuhlbarg DP30, for “Serious Man”

  18. sanj says:

wow. a new Jennifer Lawerence dp/30 and new K-Stew dp/30 . i’m super impressed cause DP didn’t like hunger games …. i figure DP rememebers every movie and somehow it makes a difference if actors come back or not .

    wow he’s actualy in it from 2009 – 3 years ago. needs a new updated dp/30 .

pretty good character actor ..just not well known to sell box office .

yeah lots of people were impressed by Josh Brolin in MIB3 .. but crazy hat alien made it worth it cause it could have been so much worse … Stuhlbarg balanced him out as alien/ human …

i also watched MIB 3 – behind the scenes and Stuhlbarg got like 3 minutes of 30 minutes… when Will Smith is in a movie – he is the star and nobody can balance that out – seems to work for Tom Cruise too …

can’t find the full interview – better than nothing.

    DP/30 Sneak Peek – TIFF ’09 – A Serious Man

  19. Krillian says:

Day 8 with my Twitter account suspended. I wonder what I did…

As much as DP disliked Hunger Games, I don’t remember Jennifer Lawrence being one of the reasons why.

  20. sanj says:

DP should put up the dp.20 with K-Stew – all those twliight fans are waiting …sure one movie might not have anything to do with another movie … but these fans will make it high rated with tons of views …
unless DP delays the dp/30 for a few weeks and then the twilight fans will be upset …

Lady Gaga has something new out – this time its a 5 minute ad for her perfume … some real high end graphics / art …

i can’t understand the story but not sure if i’m supposed too…

Lady Gaga – 5 minute video

  21. sanj says:

DP – can you put up the K-Stew / Jen Lawerence dp/30’s seeing how there’s a huge demand for them now .

putting up 2 new dp/30’s a day seems easy and reasonable.

if you delay this then you’ll get 1000 vampires after you …the twilight fans want the K-Stew.

unless of course your posting every dp/30 in a super secret japanese anime forum nobody knows about.

  22. sanj says:

awesome – they be helping people

Another Reason To Love Emma Stone And Andrew Garfield

  23. SamLowry says:

“I told my client to buy a subscription to Netflix for the price of a bag of popcorn and a drink and vote with his feet and his pocketbook.”

From Michigan judge tosses theater snacks lawsuit. Really, what did he expect? The Republicans have this state in a deathgrip and so this is the result. (And the subhead “Customer alleged price gouging on snacks” is hilarious…”alleged”? I know you have to be all dainty and proper to avoid getting your own ass sued, but come on!)

To counter the nonsensical argument that favors barring outside snacks because “You can’t bring food into a restaurant”, how about we start occupying tables in restaurants for two hours to watch movies on our laptops and see what happens.

  24. Ray Pride says:

Wasn’t there a movie blogger who ate out on the story of being chastised for bringing his own crumbcake to a tony Manhattan boite?

  25. SamLowry says:

What’s a hoot is that the Atty Gen will hop on TV every time gas stations start raising prices in response to any burp in the Middle East, threatening to sue anyone who tries to gouge the citizens of our fair state, and yet these theater snack prices are apparently A-OK in his book.

  26. Joe Leydon says:

Sam: You need gas. You don’t need concessions.

  27. SamLowry says:

Joe, the reason I don’t go to the movies anymore is because each time we pass the concession stand after buying tickets the kids look at me like Oliver Twist and I feel like a total loser when I have to admit I can’t afford to buy them ANYTHING. They feel like they’re missing out on half of the moviegoing experience, I feel depressed because I can’t give it to them, and we all end up having a lousy experience even before it starts.

So we skip it altogether and I tell ’em it’ll be a lot cheaper just to buy the DVD when it comes out.

Have you seen the new M&M displays? The ones that say “Give them a Happy Halloween”? The first time I saw that I sneered “You bastards!” at the Hershey Company.

BTW, I don’t recall the Atty Gen actually going after anyone. This is a business-oriented state, after all. So they raise prices every time a car-bomb goes off, he rattles his saber to make the gallery feel happy, and we still end up paying more for nothing.

  28. bulldog68 says:

Sam, here’s an idea, go see End of Watch, and you won’t have to take the kids, plus, its just a gutwrenchingly good movie with some stellar performances by the two main leads. It has become my favourite of the year thus far. And I hope this movie propels the career of Michael Pena. He has proven he can hold his own.

  29. sanj says:

i noticed Michael Pena in 30 Minutes or Less 2011 – i asked for a dp/30 back then ….got nothing.

on the bonus side – the new Jennifer Lawrence dp/30 is up… she tells a few funny stories about googling herself.
DP spends a lot of time talking about her fame since the hunger games but never mentions the fans …

    some new Jen dp/30 gifs

  30. sanj says:

Lincoln – Anna Karenina – Hyde Park on Hudson are movies i just don’t care about …all these should be on hbo ..but with a few big name actors …all they want is oscars … and movie bloggers get suckered into these types of movies every year …

i’m sure super old people are like ..this is history its important but i just don’t care …

way back there was The Other Boleyn Girl with Portman and Johansson and even their hotness couldn’t make me like the movie or understand it and right now i don’t even remember it

any upcoming movies you don’t care about ? over 100 by the end of the year …

  31. sanj says:

DP actually did it – the Jen Lawrence and K-Stew dp/30’s are up … don’t know if you care DP but thousands of fake vampires are going to be happy.

on the road dp/30 – standard dp/30 – K-Stew made no effort to bring up any personal questions about her life ..which will annoy a lot of people but DP didn’t ask K-Stew or that guy about any other movie they’ve done.

really anybody could have done this interview – DP if you wanted actors who risk something by becoming bigger or different you should have gotten Selena Gomez for Spring Breakers …

as for road trip movies – i’m guessing more people will still have watched harold and kumar go to white castle – where 2 guys just try to get some burgers but go on a crazy road trip adventure…isn’t that much more fun than
whatever these people did in the 60’s ?

not sure if LexG is banned or what but he would say
K-Stew LOOK AT HER!!! about 100 times.

  32. SamLowry says:

In the “Quote Unquote”, how can Rian Johnson reconcile saying “Digital projection bugs me less” right before stating that a 2nd generation print actually looked better? If film looks better than digital then digital should bug him more, right?

  33. sanj says:

    some great interviews from nerdist

these 2 people are super funny and real…great stories … totally free – 1 hour audio podcasts..;.

    Anna Kendrick –

    Thomas Middleditch

  34. sanj says:

watched the Bradley Cooper dp/30 – 2 minutes of confusing him with some questions – DP didn’t bother to ask about any other movies except the hangover series ….

overall i give this 6.5/10 – could be so much better …
it would have if Bradley asked DP questions about movies
    in general…

the best Bradley interview i’ve seen recently is 45 minutes with Howard Stern – somehow the dude with wacky hair asked better movie questions about Limitless than DP with this one.

  35. sanj says:

DP – i ask for a lot of dp/30’s but this one is easy ..
bullet in the face – ifc tv ….6 episodes = 2 hours total.

funny comedy – great acting – great cast – you can get an exclusive.

  36. Don R. Lewis says:

I don’t normally post crowd-funding stuff but this project about Samuel Fuller looks really cool and has GREAT backer perks. It’s a doc made by his daughter and features friends of his doing readings of his journals from his office. There’s also unseen footage. It’s about $2k shy of reaching its goal

  37. sanj says:

spent 1 hour on youtube watching stuff about time travel …

    – future hasn’t happened yet so can’t travel to future
    – travel to past might lead to other universes
    – travel to past to kill evil people doesn’t work cause
    they still exsist
    – the crazy amount of energy need to time travel is too high
for it to work right now

…looper is coming out so looking forward to that ..lots of time travel stuff …

    – still favorite time travel movie that makes sense is back to the future

    – i want a dp/30 with Stephen Hawking – super smart science dude .. want him to talk about scifi / time travel movies ….DP use your movie critic superpowers and
get on this … it’ll get a million views . …plus he got his own tv shows on discovery and other places ..

Stephen Hawking – Black Hole Time Travel – 5 minutes

  38. sanj says:

    watched

    DP/30: Passion, screenwriter/director Brian DePalma

    – not bad – was expecting more cool stories from this guy…
he didn’t have that many… did an alright job talking about passion

the coolest old guy director interview is Tony Kaye – DP should promote that interview more ..

DP is the king of indie film interviews and yet there aren’t enough updates…at least dozen films….someitmes its box office or awards or just updates with actors / directors …they can’t be that hard to find …

still waiting for youtubers to show up for a dp/30 – dozens of super funny people DP hasn’t interviewed.
Jenna Marbles on youtube gets millions of views for her comedy and yet DP hasn’t noticed her and given her at least 3 dp/30’s .

tons of people on youtube are way better than a lot of indie filmmakers .. i’m hoping the people over at the dp/30 factory notice that and mention it to DP.

  39. sanj says:

    watched

    DP/30 @ Cannes 2012: After Lucia, writer/director Michel Franco

standard dp/30 – it got real interesting when he mentioned Steven Spielberg …he’s not a huge fan but DP didn’t ask about any movie titles he didn’t like…
that conversation could have lasted 5 more minutes
and if you cut that part out it would have gone viral ..
    big miss.

this movie won an award and it didn’t get that many views ..kinda sucks.

  40. sanj says:

emmys – somehow DP missed out on homeland which got 3 emmys …for his iconic dp/30 emmywatch series . how’d he miss this super amazing show ? a show i gave up on after 5 episodes.

DP did interview Aaron Paul but Alison Brie got nothing .
Alison Brie needs another dp/30 before nbc cancels coummunity… which tv show will she go on next …

also i predict that guys with kids and go on – nbc shows will be cancelled … not much wrong with actors but the writing is so bad and making super fun comedies is hard.

nbc really needs Jerry Seinfeld back ..

  41. sanj says:

DP – Aaron Paul won the emmy – why aren’t you promoting all the dp/30’s you’ve done with him on the front page … do you expect people to randomly find it … good time to get some new dp/30 fans …

where’s the Michael Pena dp/30 coming …. i asked a year ago and there was your chance for end of watch .
is he not worthy ? whats up with that .. i’d be fine if he had done a few dp/30’s before but he didn’t .

  42. sanj says:

looks like the dp/30 factory is working super hard – 7 old dp/30 in a row .. i’ve seen them all .

so Halle Berry is the most interesting – Javier Bardem is the 2nd best … Nicole Kidman was just there to push for movie award …didn’t feel like a real dp/30 .
    the rest were okay.

but i really want a dp/30 with Stephen Hawking or even a dp/10 … want to hear what his favorite scfi films are … come on DP – get a world exclusive and get 1 million views.

also why aren’t more people posting on byob ?

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
