DP, do you know if Tom Rothman’s work on Robopocalypse is supposed to be in addition to, or in place of, Kathleen Kennedy?

  2. berg says:

I’m watching the blu ray of Gimme Shelter and it’s amazing how much Mel Belli looks just like Brian Cox (who of course played Belli in Zodiac)

  3. sanj says:

the neighbors tv show is still on tv – i figured it might get better but didn’t – the space aliens ain’t so funny –
every episode turns into a family drama where everything turns okay at the end .. it doesn’t belong on abc – it belongs on a different network …

    also –

some fun shots of Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara

  4. Proman says:

    @DP, I see. Thanks.

  5. Krillian says:

Expect the whisper campaign to ramp up against Argo in December for all the liberties they took with what actually happened. Still loved it though. It’s not like A Beautiful Mind or The Hurricane where the liberties they took were just too much and dampened my enjoyment.

  6. bulldog68 says:

I guess this should filed under 20 weeks to Oscar but it seems the first major frontrunner in the Oscar race is now rearing it’s head, at least in the Animated category. several stories there.

    NBC Cancels Animal Practice

    – the monkey on the show did a great job at being a monkey.

nbc still doesn’t know what to do with Community …the longer they wait the more money and time will be needed for promotion …

anybody watch American Horror Story ? they go back in time with some aliens or something….i dunno. just
confusing – critics still like this show ?

K-Stew spending 20 minutes talking about perfume in some super smart / awkward way … wondering what
LexG thinks of this … K-Stew is cashing in on all that twilight fame for perfume . the best she could do ?

  8. bulldog68 says:

Ironically since the Academy debuted the Best Animated Feature award in 2001, the Annie’s have been a good predictor except for the past six years, where every other year from 2006, they’ve differed. So it may not be Dreamworks’ year.

Also ironic is that on the two occasions in the last four years that Annie’s winner did not match up with the Oscars, Annie had awarded Dreamworks’ Kung Fu Panda in 2008 and Dragon in 2010, and the Oscars went with Pixar’s Wall E and Toy Story 3.

Does this mean Brave is a lock?

  9. christian says:

Dinesh D’souza sums up the self-loathing hypocrisy of the dumbest political party in modern history.

  10. scooterzz says:

as a huge justin kirk fan, i’m sorry to hear his show got canceled…that it’s being replace with ‘whitney’ is just salt in the wound….

  11. Don R. Lewis says:

It’s just another instance of the “do as I say, not as I do” conservative assholes like Gingrich, Rush….on and on. YOU cannot marry if you’re gay. YOU cannot get an abortion. YOU should not have free access to birth control. *I* will be a piece of shit though while telling you what you can and cannot do.

  12. christian says:

I find D’souza particularly loathsome since his accusations that Obama is “anti-colonialist” is rather insane considering D’souza’s India origins. But that reveals why he’s the perfect sycophantic stooge for the GOP.

  13. Mike says:

I think Brave took too many hits about the director switch and didn’t receive enough love from reviewers. Seems like an also-ran, to me.

  14. bulldog68 says:

Well maybe the Academy will go two years in a row honoring black & white films and give it to Frankenweenie. It was certainly loved by the critics.

And on the subject of release dates, I was going to complain about December 25th, when Parental Guidance and The Guilt Trip both drop, as well as Django Unchained to a completely different audience, but after going back and looking at that release that, it has been all that bad to a few movies aimed at the same audience.

The high mark was in 2008 when Marley & Me($143m), Benjamin Button($127m), Bedtime Stories($110m), and Valkyrie($83m) all opened on the 25th.

    2009 had Sherlock($209m), and It’s Complicated($112m).
    2010 was a bust with Gulliver’s Travels ($42m)
2011 did not bust the bank either with War Horse($79m), Extremely Loud ($31m), and Darkest Hour($21m)

Of course its always about THE MOVIE, but I think Christmas falling on a Thursday allowed Friday to be a big day as well.

Barbara Streisand looks at her most irritating in Guilt Trip and Parental Guidance looks like they’re hoping for another Meet the Parents. Let’s hope Django Unchained cleans their clock. Hardly likely, but one can hope.

  15. YancySkancy says:

bulldog: What B&W animated film did the Academy honor last year? I didn’t see all of them, but assumed they were all color.

  16. sanj says:

time to get Alison Brie back for dp/30 to ask about community and whats going on behind the scenes ..
there is the business side of things and creative side of things in tv and they should be explained more …

if nbc cancels it – then put it on kickstarter and within a few months they might have enough money to make more episodes … i’m guessing the actors won’t make a huge amount but they’ll all have fun and make what they want.

look at where arrested development went to – netflix .

there’s always rich people who have the money to make
high quality tv for an audience that really pays attention….pretty much like the movie system we have now.

nobody is really asking for more Steven Segal movies but he keeps making them.

  17. Keil Shults says:

Couldn’t The Secret World of Arietty get a nod?

  18. bulldog68 says:

I was referring to The Artist winning Best Picture. Guess I didn’t make a good enough connection. And I actually forgot about Arietty.

  19. FilmBuffRich says:

  21. sanj says:

heard a review of alex cross 2012 – basically a bad tv movie ..nobody is good in it .. any film critics going to rush out and watch this ?

so i asked if Tyler Perry is going to do a dp/30 – Terry Perry is too famous for a dp/30 . oh well. DP can’t approach the guy who made all those Madea movies.

and a few days later Colbert does a quick funny 5 minute interview with Tyler Perry .

  22. Don R. Lewis says:

I saw WAKE IN FRIGHT last night and it’s totally awesome! Drafthouse films is re-releasing it (it’s from 1971) and I highly recommend the film. It wasn’t at ALL what I thought it was going to be which, I’m not sure what that was. I figured with that title and the Drafthouse people behind it, it would be whacked out horror. It’s not. At all. Seek it out if you can, great film.

  23. aframe says:

But RISE OF THE GUARDIANS is only getting the animation trophy at the Hollywood Film Awards–or, as DP puts it, “the Carloses”–hardly an indicator of anything (aside from advance hype).

  24. scooterzz says:

i watched ‘wake in fright’ this week also, and completely agree with the above post that it’s a knock-out… i, too, was expecting some kind of horror movie and was bowled with surprise (it had a kind of ‘straw dogs’ vibe)…great stuff…

  25. sanj says:

time is running out – DP needs to get some dp/30 inside a blockbuster . actors ever go inside a blockbuster ?

discussion about blockbuster movie rentals around the country …

  26. sanj says:

ComicCon Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope documentary – did any geek from the movie get super famous ?

documentaries are supposed to be more real than reality shows but if Morgan made this more reality tv friendly ..
and made all these geeks famous on tv wouldn’t that be better ?

this comic con doc should be on repeats on syfy channel.. thats where it belongs …

single people are probably more worthy of a documentary but if its a group of people they need to get a reality show that looks more like a documentary .

here’s a post about somebody not being able to watch
the movie online cause of copyright stuff …they tried
to go through itunes — xbox and the rest …

  27. sanj says:

movie critics should take a look at this ….

youtuber – comicbookgirl119 – talks about comic book movies – mostly movie reviews + books + tv shows – over 20 videos – most are under 30 minutes – some movies have spoilers –

  28. sanj says:

i was at the dollar store and they had avatar the board game for 3 bucks…

“Avatar the Board Game brings the movie experience to life. The exciting, fast-paced game utilizes board game play, reasoning and strategy for a fun, interactive gaming experience. As a Na’vi warrior, players defend iconic landmarks from the RDA, ultimately saving the sacred Tree of Souls. Be the first Na’vi warrior to successfully collect eight Woodsprite tokens through quests and or battles before the RDA destroys the tree of souls to win. ”

    here’s what it looks like

  29. scooterzz says:

“i was at the dollar store and they had avatar the board game for 3 bucks…”

then you must have been at the three-dollar store…jus’ sayin’….

  30. sanj says:

so i actually clicked on the master banner ad on mcn
    which lead to fandango

i like it when you can see 2 opposite reviews within 10 seconds from each other ….

here’s a review by some guy

“Master is a self-indulgent exercise in art for art’s sake designed to appeal to critics and Hollywood insiders not the ticket-buying public. There is no plot, no narrative arc-just a series of meaningless, disconnected vignettes. ”

and right below this is reviews by hollywood reporter – rolling stone – ew – la times – giving it 100% review

  31. sanj says:

i still want a Álex de la Iglesia dp/30 – i found him without any super important movie critics telling how good
of a director he is …

or DP can get the Duplass brothers for 3 more times before the end of the year ..those guys are the easiest to get …

the last circus 2010 rules …one day Alex will hit tiff and magically appear in a dp/30 .

also DP – there was a small band in the 60’s called the Beatles – now there are 2 band members left. Paul and Ringo…get them for a dp/30 and get them to sing some old songs together . make sure you use all your super movie critic superpowers for this one. they qualify for a dp/30 cause they made that yellow submarine animated movie way back … it wasn’t up to pixar standards but they tried.

  32. movieman says:

I just noticed that my cable provider (Armstrong Cable) is offering “2016: Obama’s America” free to all of their subscribers instead of charging the usual $3.99 for new PPV releases.
    Sounds awfully fishy to me.
I’d love to know who’s behind it.
(Remember that I live in the highly coveted “swing” state of Ohio.)

  33. sanj says:

article on what tv show ad rates are ..

    it costs 100,000 – 250,000 for 30 seconds …

    2 broke girls – it costs 270,000 for a 30 second tv ad ..

football is the highest ad rates …at 500,000 bucks

adage – what do tv ads cost …

  34. sanj says:

watched – DP/30: Won’t Back Down, actor Maggie Gyllenhaal

    – this whole thing should be on Ellen …

    – missing is the rest of the cast ….i guess Maggie hasn’t done a dp/30 in a long time …

    – there is maybe 3 minutes thats interesting …

    – the camera seems unfocused –

the biggest miss is still no Prometheus dp/30 – the biggest cast – the biggest director – the biggest special effects – big huge story …

if there is a Zero Dark Thirty dp/30 – it’ll be predictable to me – most of the cast have already done
dp/30’s before … can DP find new questions for this movie that everybody else won’t ask … i’d like to see
Jennifer Ehle and Frank Grillo dp/30’s …but we will
get another Jessica Chastain and Mark Duplass dp/30 .

any fun size dp/30 coming ? … looks like a teen movie thats not full of depressing teens or a coming of age story …..new actors that might break out

  35. sanj says:

anybody watching Amercian Horror Story ? its like a bad Nic Cage movie – there are like 4 different stories in each
episode and none of them are that interesting .

there are a lot of good actors in this and thats probably why movie critics will give this series a pass…

i did like season 1 way better ..

is ahs going to get a dp/30 ?

  36. sanj says:

i guess this is what needs to be done to promote documentaries these days …

in case you all didn’t know this artist dude Ai Weiwei has a documentary about himself and got 2 dp/30’s out of it except he didn’t show up but the director did.

    Ai Weiwei, Gangnam-Style

  37. Ray Pride says:

Yeah, that was on the front page yesterday. I think Ai is “promoting” more than that documentary.

  38. sanj says:

G4 Cancels Flagships ‘Attack Of The Show’ And ‘X-Play’

i know maybe 5 people might care about this .,..

but in the magical world of comic con land there might be thousands who care

acting wise – Olivia Munn came out of g4 and got into a lot of movies but didn’t ever get a dp/30 …

DP on AOTS . he might remember this from 2 years ago ..oscars 2010 predictions …

  39. cadavra says:

12 of the last 15 posts have been by sanj. Hmmm…

  40. sanj says:

i figure most people just want to talk about weekend box office numbers … actually talking about movies or tv shows is too much i guess.

when g4 cancelled aots / xplay – i’m pretty sure a lot of people on reddit forums figured that would happen months ago ..

finding a replacement is easy – there is electric playground which pretty much covers the same stuff for
    gamers/tech / movies ….they don’t spend a lot of time
promoting the hosts … thats what g4 did a lot …so finding a replacement for Kevin took forever …

aots isn’t that much different than the late night talk show hosts … gotta hype the hosts all the time to get
    the viewers …

    RIP G4!!! We’ll Miss You!!!

  41. sanj says:

skyfall is 2.5 hours – cloud atlas is 3 hours …looper is 2 hours

people can actually spend the whole day in a theatre watching movies ….

does it hurt the theatres moneywise if a movie is over 2 hours ..

somehow even if people paid full price for these movies – the movie studios probably want even more money…..

they should charge everybody 30 bucks for the next twilight movie – the hardcore fans would pay that .

watching cloud atlas will kill my back . can’t go . sorry Tom Hanks.

also with the whole g4 thing – people on social media sites are making fun of the network …some are real
criticisms of the programming they have – and yet nobody on g4 is out there defending it – they’ve got an entire tv network to do this .

but it looks like g4 tv will be gone toally and a piece of tv history will vanish …

i figure community will be cancelled – nbc just don’t want no good shows no more ….

hey DP – if you stop doing the dp/30 will you respond to the hundreds of messages or will you just end up watching tree of life for the 8th time …

  42. sanj says:

i was being serious of cloud atlas being too long –
also i missed dark knight rises cause it was too long …

in a movie like this if you sleep for 5 minutes – you miss too much – or if you leave at 1.5 hours then you wasted your money – you can’t win ….

how many people saw this at tiff and how much were tickets ?

movie critics – how do you watch movies that are this long ? did Roger Ebert give you special powers ?

here are some twitter posts about it being too long ..

    Blessy Chettiar ‏@TheChaddiar

Cloud Atlas will blow you away if you’re willing pay a LOT of attention. But it’s way too long for anyone’s patience

    Shannon Tesser ‏@Shanxando

Official review of Cloud Atlas: an hour two long, tried too hard to be epic, only half the stories held my interest. Not worth it.

    madame b ‏@madameb8

Cloud Atlas message was interesting but it seemed too long and disconnected. Glad I didn’t have to pay for it.

  44. sanj says:

    watched a bunch of new dp/30’s …

DP/30: Arbitrage, actor Richard Gere – alright – didn’t talk about pretty woman at all – 7/10

DP/30: The Flat, documentarian Aaron Goldfinger – this guy likes telling stories – 7/10

DP/30: Flight, director Robert Zemeckis – didn’t talk about back to the future – 7/10

anybody coming from hitcock movie for interviews ? lots of big stars in that …

i want the producers from louie tv show – louie is too famous for a dp/30 …

the guys from beasts of the southern wild must be super angry at DP for not putting up a simple interview ..

DP still has the Parker Posey dp/30 that hasn’t gone up.

a dozen of my favorite actors still haven’t shown up
for a dp/30 – how super extra busy are they ?

prometheus had a dozen questions people want answers too and DP never did get a dp/30 – it would have gotten a lot of views – somehow DP only cares if Fassbender and Theron
are in small indie movies vs huge blockbusters ?

    – this byob thing is dead if i’m the only one posting …

  45. sanj says:

hey DP – have you heard any nerdist podcast ? they are pretty good and pretty much competition for the dp/30 format but longer and more informal and personal ….

Zach Galifianakis did a 1 hour+ nerdist podcast

he talked about being famous and rich and religion …
and trying to be normal actor …. he didn’t spend a whole lot of time talking about the hangover movies …
    which kinda surprised me …

    Zach G on nerdist –

  46. sanj says:

watched DP/30: Flight, actor Kelly Reilly

good to see new actors but standard dp/30 . best line – “you have high hopes for me huh ”

every uk actor is forced by the queen to do theatre and thats what DP always ask UK actors about ….she did several plays but DP didn’t even ask about titles …

if this movie gets nominated for oscar maybe she’ll be back but if not – i expect her back in tiff 2013 ….

how come indie movie makers like Gerta Gerwig and Mark Duplass never go to the UK and make like 6 indie films over there ? the queen will find out and ban them. the queen only wants uk actors there. so they can
have a monopoly on every single play and film there.

DP – there are over 100 youtubers who are pretty great at performance who never had a dp/30 . maybe they are at snl comedy level but you never give them a chance ..some have made 100 + videos . get on this ….

g4 tv is pretty much dead by the end of this year and will anybody from there ever get a dp/30 ? they’ve all got tons of stories to tell … sure it’s not your normal thing DP …. i’m wondering what all of comic con thinks about this next year …

a lot of g4 hosts where only on tv for 1 hour or less per week and yet they did have a big impact on the geek/gamer community . i figure everybody who left g4 tv will be fine and go on .

i seem to be the only one who talks about g4 on here – so for everybody else it has had zero impact on them …

anybody from mcn actually watch any g4 tv program ?

  47. sanj says:

watched a James Bond movie special on mtv for 30 minutes…..why does Daniel Craig like mtv more than doing a dp/30 ? at least you could have got Bardem ..he seems easy to get … or one of the Bond girls ..
    who isn’t Berenice Bejo

DP – you never did any Bond dp/30’s ..and you were around
when that super old Sean Connery was around…whats the deal ? i guess Bond will never be an indie movie at sundance ..

Bond movies never needed a dp/30 – it just sells itself.

  48. sanj says:

alright – my last request for Kate Kelton dp/30 – really awesome in Bullet in the Face tv series – only 6 episodes … if this series doesn’t impress DP – i’m not sure what will …. i really hope somebody in the dp/30 factory gets this message to DP himself … there’s too many awesome actors who need dp/30’s and DP is really missing out …

bullet in the face – 2 minute clip

  49. David Poland says:

    sanj –

Being on DP/30 is a combination of my interest and the effort of publicists. I often go after people, but most often, someone is pushing on the other side. And especially this time of year (Aug – Feb), I am already shooting as fast as I can. I am on a trip for a few days now and when I come back, we have 4 interviews lined up for next week. And that will probably become 6 or more. All legit Oscar players or studio movies. And there are indies who want time too… which I’d like to give them.

I have a stack of Foreign Language films nominated by their countries to watch. I have indies to watch. And I have new studio stuff to catch up with every week. So when do I see Bullet in the Face? I don’t know.

I have no bias against young talent on the rise. I am interested in those stories too. But it’s really tough at times to get past the logjam… a logjam of INCREDIBLE talent. Every half hour is an investment of at least 5 hours of work for me, between seeing the film, shooting, editing (even as limited as it is), etc. I’m not complaining. I love doing these. But it eats a lot of time. For most people doing half-hours, the investment is full-time and they have a staff. I am a one-man band with cameraman and great support from the industry.

  50. sanj says:

DP – i’m a huge fan of news actors that finally deliver really good acting – Hailee Steinfeld – Shailene Woodley ..but then they don’t seem to come back ???

Kate Kelton and Kim Shaw are pretty good – Kim Shaw was in mtv’s i just want my pants back… show is now cancelled but Kim is doing more tv series ..

from your side of things – how hard is it to get indie tv shows interviews … these don’t last years and years like a seindfeld or friends . 1 year max they’ve got .

DP – bullet in the face takes 2 hours to watch the entire series total – give it a shot when you find time .
if i’m wrong about this let me know .

favorite dp/30 right now – John Gatins
most boring dp/30 right now – Maggie Gyllenhaal
guy who only wants awards dp/30 – Ben Affleck
biggest dp/30 you missed – prometheus

good news is community is coming back – so try more Alison Brie for dp/30 … plus arrested development is coming – another series that somehow came back – that never did get a dp/30 ..just based on the craziness of

    new arrested development documentary …

Quote Unquotesee all »

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.

~ David Simon
