Review-ier: Pacific Rim – Part Two, The Flaws (ALL SPOILERS)

I’m going to do this whole SPOILER thing after the jump…

The big hitch in the giddy-up of Pacific Rim, for me, pretty much comes right after the terrific 5-minute opening piece explaining how we got to the beginning of the story. How the Kaiju arrived and humans responded and got really good at fighting back with the Jaegers so it all became kinda normalized. The last line, paraphrased, is, “And then things changed…”

So… does the next section, which is the story of the brothers Becket and how the older one died and the younger one survived but turned his back on the Jaeger program, explain how things changed? Well, personally, for Raleigh Becket, I guess so. But I took the comment at more universal and, no, the question is not answered by the Becket brothers and their loss.

If you watch the entire film, you find that things really change when a scientist, Charlie Day’s Dr. Newton Geiszler Pac-Rim had perhaps the easiest legal clearances on names in the history of cinema, aside from “he” and “she”), drifts (mind melds) with a Kaiju. That is when, as well explained by Hannibal Chau, the Kaiju know enough to create new Kaiju tools to deal with the Jaegers more lethally.

But wait… the movie tells us that the Jaeger program starts becoming less and less effective over a 5-year period, starting around the time of the Beckets’ troubles.

And therein lies the disconnect of the film, I believe.

Simple version… Things are going great. Dr Geiszler drifts with a Kaiju. All of a sudden, the Kaiju are figuring out new ways to beat the Jaegers. One of the killed is Yancy Becket. Humankind doesn’t know why or how the Kaijus are becoming more unstoppable, but the Jaeger program falls out of favor. Cut to a few years later. They are down to a few Jaegers. Dr. Geiszler tells his story about drifting with his relatively new partner, Gottlieb, as some detail of Kaiju thinking comes up for debate…. and bam, the conversation about drifting again comes up with the boss, Stacker Pentecost, who seems doing it again as a strategic imperative, also not realizing what Hannibal Chau instantly gets, that the Kaiju got more intel from Geiszler than he got from them.

Now add on the idea that the Kaiju keep attacking wherever Geiszler happens to be. Of course, he always seems to be with the big show, so it doesn’t make anyone suspicious. Until they know about the drift. So why are the Kaiju chasing him? They want something from him.

This also adds a little more movie-specific motivation for the Kaiju within the film. I wanted a touch more. Wouldn’t call it a failure of the film, as I think it was a distinct choice. But I would have been ok with an added touch.

Everything else in Acts 2 and 3 pretty much remains intact, though the memory of the death of Yancy Becket is also done in flashback – which is done so brilliantly with the Mako Mori character. You don’t need it up front. It drives the personal story, but not the big story… which is specially problematic before the opening credit. What is the movie about? Not about Becket. Not about one individual.

Take that kink and the kink of the time structure of the Geiszler out of the line and the movie starts to feel more like a well-made bed. The question the movie proposes – why did things get worse? – is answered and made a clear part of the movie’s story. The beat when the Kaiju licks Geiszler actually makes sense – it is trying to plug in, just as Geiszler had. And of course, it also leaves the opening to leave a Ghostbusters moment… putting a vulnerability into the mix, so in the final fight, we get the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man and not Godzilla… though nothing that silly would be in this film.

I think, after looking at the film twice, that would work most of it out for me. As is, I feel like the Charlie Day stuff with Ron Perlman feels like a B story with two actors I like. But the idea of Perlman’s character is a great one. His realization that drifting is a 2-way street should not be an afterthought.

Also, the pre-credit opening with the brothers seems off to me. It just never matters enough for that kind of positioning, except as exposition. There are other ways to get to action straight away.

And more could be made of the real center of the story… the evolution to non-related Jaeger drivers. We start the movie and that’s all there are. In the end, it’s two pairs of non-relatives going out to save the world. Why is that better? Have we evolved?

Or leave it alone. That is the filmmakers’ call, not mine.

My thing is just that every time I felt like the movie was getting in the groove – and I like the groove – things that didn’t seem organically placed turned up and threw me off. It just became clear to me the second time around that the central issue in this tale – the Kaijus are getting smarter at beating the Jaegers – had a pretty simple answer… it’s not just about brawn, but about Charlie Day’s brain… the unintentional double agent. This also parallels the relationship between the two Jaeger drivers, who share every bit of information about the other, like it or not. In other words, it fits.

I’d also love to have more about how Raleigh Becket goes off-line when he and Mako Mori saddle up together. Did he send her spiraling with images of his brother that he could control, but she could not? The device Del Toro sets up is so lovely, would be happy to see more of it.

Anyway… that is what I think I think is “wrong” with this film that I very much enjoyed. It’s not broken. It’s just less perfect than I wanted it to be. It was so good in so many ways that I wanted it to fit like a Jaeger. So close.

My two thoughts on the kaiju getting better: 1) They have a hive-mind, so the kaiju yet-to-invade are made aware of everything the defeated kaiju experienced, and more importantly to your sticking point, 2) My guess was that “things changed” (the size, strength, tactics, & resilience of the kaiju was stepped up) when Hannibal Chau drifted with a kaiju; they don’t give a specific time, but it seems reasonable that his earlier indiscretion (which gave him the info he needed to become the best in the world at understanding the kaiju & what makes them tick) was around the same time as the start of the film.

    So things changed in a personal was for Raleigh, things changed universally because of Hannibal’s drift, and Geiszler’s role is to uncover Hannibal’s story in a way which further ramps up the scale of the film’s action. The biggest problem I have with the idea that the kaiju were meaningfully altering their strategies in response to human-kaiju drifting is the other scientist’s ability to mathematically predict the kaiju’s behavior—and to still be right after Geiszler’s first drift.

    Aren’t the big baddies from across the universe who want a sequel watching the battles, learning from them, and teleporting in improved replacements? Think of it like Abe Lincoln watching McDowell, Pope, McClellan, Burnside, and Hooker fail and then teleporting in Grant, because he finally realized, he couldn’t outsmart Lee, but he had more men, so he needed a man who was willing to sacrifice his own for victory.

    As for Raleigh…sigh…I have the same problem caring about him that I did for Worthington in “Avatar.” He’s a soulless, though hot, big white Australian/Brit who can’t emote (and Kikuchi, who I enjoyed, but was no doubt cast thanks to buddy Inarittu, is no Zoe Saldana). Del Toro seems to shy from characterization when confronted with it in a big moment…he definitely did here…but I didn’t care, and I haven’t for most of his films.

    This is still my larger problem with Del Toro though. Unless it’s kids (Pan, Devil’s Backbone), he’s unwilling to delve deeper it seems. And that’s why, to me, he remains the least of the three amigos. Inarittu sometimes creates human complexions that get in the way of story, Del Toro avoids this to the extreme to where it lessens the story, and Cuaron has it juuust right (and now that I have said this, “Gravity” is going to go down in flames due to factors other than Sandra Bullock’s new face and acting ability).

    I just really didn’t like it when Yancy died. I was hoping for someone to bellow “For Yancy!!!!” before delivering a death blow. No such luck.

    The only really good sequence in the film, and it was a very good sequence, was when the very young Mako Mori was racing through the streets on her own trying to escape the Kaiju. That was moving. That had a heartbeat. That had a soul.

    The rest was tiresome.

    There were a lot of things I enjoyed such as the background ‘culture’ of Kaiju/Jaeger story, the worn, lived in equipment of the Jaeger programme,the international focus of it, Idris Alba, the action scenes generally, the odd bits of humour, the Mako backstory. But yeah the broad-brush character treatment and the lack of focus on key story elements drew it back a bit.

    The flashback sequence in Tokyo with the little girl was absolutely the best part of the movie, and that alone was enough to move it into “love” territory for me. I think the comparisons to Avatar are very apt; sheer mind-blowing spectacle on top of a paint-by numbers story and a dead-eyed dishwater lead. Like Avatar, I don’t think it’ll play as well on a small screen, not even close, since the massive scale of everything is why the movie works.

    Just walked in from PACIFIC RIM and absolutely loved it. It’s FANTASTIC. Yes, the points you raise above are excellent, David. But at the end of the day, they just feel nitpicky. There’s an undercurrent of sheer joy running thought the film and it’s infectious.

    Again, I agree with most everything you wrote above but again, you can find flaws in any movie. The stuff you mentioned wasn’t enough to take me out of it. I also agree that the Hunnam character was a little bland. I ALSO had a little trouble parsing out some of the action in the battle scenes. However, I’m looking forward to seeing this spectacle of a film in IMAX 3-D as soon as possible and I think those issues will be ironed out.

    I also managed to convince my day job to let me take ten 10-14 year olds to it and they flipped for it. They were reacting WITH a movie like I’ve not seen in a long, long time. And I try and take kids at my work to the movies often. Because I get paid to and I get to see them for free. And, it’s fun. BUT…they’ve never reacted this strongly to a film that I’ve seen with them in multiple trips to movies. All the way back they were spelling out the mythology to one another, the word “Kaiju,” new to their vernacular being chewed on and used. Fucking awesome.

    Great stuff.

    I want someone to study how people can have such different reactions to a movie. I absolutely hated this film but I respect that some people loved it. Why? It was so clichéd. The monster design was dull. The story sags in the middle. The battle sequences have no excitement or interesting staging. The characters are moronic. And the noise — my ears are still in the ICU.

    Not joking here but were you sleepy/grumpy or hungry? I sometimes have really negative reactions to films when I am. Seriously not trying to be a dick….I just found PR a ton of fun and am kinda shocked that there’s a “hatred” for it. What is there to “hate?”

    And I also don’t get “clichéd” when it’s a wholly original mash-up of genres. It totally wears it’s inspirations on it’s sleeves. What other robot -vs- Kaiju movie does it remind you of?

    I do agree the monsters were designed kind of weird but other than that, it’s just so likable!

    Unless you havent seen Top Gun (or Hot Shots). Or a Godzilla movie. Or a gigantic chunk of anime. Or Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

    That’s fine, its homage and Del Toro paints in other people’s palettes, but people are excusing the dumb. And there’s a lot. And im not talking “Superman doesn’t kill dumb.” Im taking basic dumb, like why the Earth Government is on some kind of either/or plan. Nope, Jaegers dont work. Lets build a wall. And lets abandon every other conventional method of military. Maybe some machine guns or missiles on those helicopters could distract the monsters, instead of, you know, doing nothing. Giving the kaiju one target. Nukes seemed to work well at the end. How about dropping a few hundred of them on the kaiju?

    And for all this talk about how different Pacific Rim is for not being jingoistic American disaster porn, they do kill off the ‘diverse’ cast real quick without any character development. And the world is saved by two Brits, an Aryan-American, and a hot Japanese girl which is basically the ultimate geek fantasy.

    How in God’s name does anyone consider that diverse?

    I always find it interesting when people rush to defend something that appeals so strongly to them and start to apply adjectives that are patently false. This is only original the way Oblivion was original, i.e. not original. This is not the best Summer movie by a long shot. Del Toro makes live action cartoons. His characters are no better developed than the kids shows you see on Saturday morning. The acting in this movie ranged from stiff to comically broad. When Idris Alba (an actor i love) walks up to Hunman and goes “I’ve seen a lot of crazy fighting in my time….” and everybody tenses up, and then he delivers “that’s the best i’ve ever seen.” Holy shit. Like, Asylum level acting bad.

    It’s a fun piece of fluff. Deep as a puddle of piss. Some day-glo visuals and some nice visual FX, though the fights were kind of toothless.

    The title is so perfect: Pacific Rim. It sounds like porn. And that’s what it is. Geek porn. Giant robot fights. Hot Asian girl. Karate.

    How on Earth are people showering this much praise on a soulless cartoon?

    Bulldog, its actually about the same experience.

    I think most movies end up in the middle. Some are a little above average, some are a little below average. I think 80% of the movies released a year theatrically probably fall into that range.

    The problem are in this overly agitated state where they feel they have to condemn everything thats less than average and heap the above average ones onto their shoulders.

    Im fine with people saying they love a movie like this. Thats cool. Im not going to tell you what to love. But when they start saying ‘original’, ‘diverse’, and ‘well directed’ i will challenge those assertions. Because the film doesnt have to be original, diverse, or well directed to enjoy it. Hell, i liked White House Down and it was none of those things.

    People want what they like to be ‘perfect’. So they build it into something it isn’t. I remember Zach Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead. Holy shit did people go off about how amazing that movie was based on the opening sequence. It was a fantastic opening sequence. Did they watch the rest of the movie? Not terrible, but pretty average.

    I still believe in average. Which is what most films are. I still believe you can criticize a movie for its obvious flaws and still say you liked it.

    It seems like we’re losing the ability to articulate into anything other than good or bad. No one seems to care about the nuances within those categorizations. As a writer, that weirds me out.

    well, another voice of dissent here but maybe people DO think something is well-directed and has elements of originality, maybe that’s why they specify it in the reasons they enjoy something, esp when they explain and detail why they feel that way – just because anghus doesn’t think something is original or well-directed doesn’t mean the voice of reason has spoken and people just don’t know what they’re talking about or it has to be a pile-on — as a fan of snyder’s ‘dawn of the dead’ (and i’m not a fan of snyder in general at this point), i’d argue there are several well-conceived and directed action sequences in that movie, and many of the quieter character moments are also deftly handled, crucial to character development giving the carnage meaning with people i care about to root for; i particularly like the sweet, blooming romance between ana and michael, the melancholy long distance roof-top relationship between kenneth and andy, and cj’s arc – going from a complete dickhead that i couldn’t wait to see die horribly to someone i wish could have escaped his terrible demise in an act of sacrifice for the group. i’d argue the directing throughout DOTD and the film itself is not all ‘average’ after the opening set-up, far from it, malarkey – so…there.

    I liked Pacific Rim, to an extent, but the movie was all over the place. Del Toro told aintitcoolnews.com that he cut something like an hour of the movie that basically developed the characters much more than this version. Maybe some of that stuff should have been left in.

    I understand this is Giant Robots vs Giant Aliens, but I had the feeling the film was going for a bit more than that, but it just didn’t pull it off. Charlie Day’s character made a sentence or two after the alien mind meld, saying how mankind, by their own doing, brought the aliens here, and how dinosaurs were the first round, something of that nature. But those ideas are basically unimportant or at the very least aren’t explained in a way that seems to make much sense. Something like global warming made Earth a more ideal place for the aliens, right? The lamest “go green” message in film history. I can accept such undeveloped ideas.

    How did that portal between the two universes work? Can’t another bridge be made? Why just send in one giant alien at a time? Why does it take them years to figure out that maybe a whole lot of aliens would be a good idea? Why did Ron Pearlman mind meld to begin with? What was his motivation for doing so?

    Nothing about the film felt complete. A lot of ideas, but they never came together. Still, the film had a certain attitude or feel that makes it work better than it had any right of doing.

    And doesn’t the main Jaeger look a lot like Master Chief from Halo mixed with Samus from Metroid? It looked great, but like a lot of the movie, very unoriginal.

    This movie is only better than Transformers movies in the sense that there’s less potty humor and not too long. Those movies were always a gulity pleausure.

    I really am looking forward to a director’s cut, which could do the movie some good service.

    Yeah, kind of forgot about Robot Jox. But to be fair, mentioning anime/manga kind of covers that. Those guys kind of perfected the idea of giant fighting robots. And i dont think a lot of people saw Robot Jox.

    You can’t imagine why Earth’s governments would opt to drop a nuke down an interdimensional portal vs dropping them all over their major cities in order to combat the Kaiju? For serious?

    Anghus, couldn’t have said it better. For me, I use the critical reaction – pro or con – to determine who to listen to in the future. After his recommendations of “This is the End” and “Pacific Rim,” David P is in my dog house. Never again.

    I’m completely cool with that, Dan. If you don’t like TITE and my recommendation with reservations on Pac-Rim irks, we have very different taste in film. Not a terrible thing.

    Not gonna phrase this artfully but it’s been DRIVING ME NUTS since yesterday:

    Was enjoying this quite a bit, then… WHAT IS GOING ON in the last 15 minutes? The movie peaks with that HK battle, but that underwater finale: UTTERLY INCOHERENT, not helped by having Charlie Day SPEEDILY BLURT OUT some bullshit into a muffled PA about “imitate the kaiju’s DNA”, whatever THAT MEANS.

    So I had NO IDEA what the plan was there at the end, how the two science geeks divined that from their “drift,” where the Elba robot and the Hunnam robot were in relation to each other…. There’s a BIG SACRIFICE, and whatEVER you say about Bay, when Willis does the same in Armageddon, you understand exactly what he’s doing. Here, Elba and Iceman seem to be giving up and I had NO IDEA what had happened, cut to a shot of a robot with a SWORD exploding, which I thought was the Hunnam robot, but then Hunnam and Rinko slice a kaiju in half and seemingly ride one down through the portal…. How is it IMITATING THE DNA to just carry a corpse downward?

    Just a total visual jumble, and I saw it in great 3D and on a big IMAX with good projection. But the things that were happening, I wasn’t comprehending, again thanks to CHARLIE DAY’S STUPID WHA WAH WAH BLAH BLAH DNA — how does NOBODY not QC things like that and realize unless you’re a total science nerd, NO ONE in the audience can understand that?

    Also, isn’t the “ride the bomb in personally” complete with bug-eyes reaction from the beast an unfortunate EXACT SAME THING as the ending from Oblivion 2 months ago?

    Also kinda threw my hands up at what an asexual geek GDT is when the two leads PLATONICALLY HUG EACH OTHER on the water, lest it give any little boys in the audience the “yuks” to see kissing. Tell me you weren’t missing the Bay Touch when Hunnam didn’t at least tax that ass.

    there were a lot of shots in PR where continuity was tossed out the hatch …. but at the end they needed the body of the kaiju to open the portal, which reads the kaiju dna like a bar code … and where’s the goddam shoe?

    Pacific Rim is one of things where all the good things you hear are true and all the bad things you hear are true. The smashing action is great. A lot of the things in service of it are not. The Top Gun/Hot Shots thing has been mentioned, but did you notice they ripped a lot of the characters wholesale from Independence Day with not as good casting?

    We have the pilot who loses his best friend, the guy who used to be in combat but is now the man in charge and goes back into combat, and the the two geeky guys, one who warns everyone of the incoming danger and the other who’s obsessed with the aliens. I’ll take Brent Spiner and Jeff Goldblum over Charlie Day and the other guy any day of the week (Then again, I HATE It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Few things are worse than a comedy that isn’t funny), Will Smith blows the main guy of this out of the water, and yeah, this is going to bring the people who think Edris Elba should rule the universe out of the woodwork, but Bill Pullman did “the speech” better.

    The X-Factor is Rinko Kikuchi: She saves this damn movie.

    I liked the opening sequence and then came the line “And then everything changed…” I thought man, we’re really gonna see some sh#t! But to me it didn’t have a dramatic change. I felt let down by that. Maybe he was just talking about losing his bro but I just expected a new pattern or they were going to come from the air, something, anything. Not that I wasn’t cool with the battles or how the monsters came out, just that it seemed more of the same.

    I did like the part where the one sprouted wings and took off.

    I liked the look of it. Quite beautiful. Even though it had the same type of destruction, I was glad it didn’t look like Transformers to me. I really loved the look of Trannies, and even impressed that the look and mechanics of the robots improved, but part of my problem with the latest Supes was that it looked too much like Trannies. I was just happy they mixed things up.

    What do you think the target age was for this? Something about them when they first sync up in the suits strikes me as some video game I’d see tweens play at Chuck E Cheese. But then, there was no real moral or lesson, (besides the initial set up of coming together as a planet), presented, which makes the movie target up in age to more prime 18-25 yr olds.

    I’m glad they didn’t really try to weave in cheesy story arcs for everyone to where everyone gets their “reward” at the end like bows are tied up on rom-coms, or rebounding or everyday person hero gets to overcome their life’s obstacle. This sorta did but no gag inducing over simplified arc.

    Had a few unintentional laughs, a few places I thought should have been funny but no one else even chuckled. I didn’t think it was great but I was entertained. I guess I get greedy from “grownup” superhero movies like Batman Begins or X-Men First Class, but I wondered what this film would’ve looked like if Del Toro had gone with a stronger storyline like Pans Lab and less popcorn, continuous action???

    My biggest complaint is not having a robot-monster beatdown in broad daylight Japan. I wanted to see some clear action unobscured by rain or water.

    I was definitely wondering what could he be put in. Is it a military film where his small band of soldiers have to take the hill? Is he the lone cop fighting a corrupt dept? Is he the next “die hard in a _____” guy? Some concocted superhero? He’s pleasant and commanding enough to watch but I hope it’s not just some color by numbers film they plug him into.

    as long as they don’t make poor idris do a (terrible) southern drawl like in ‘prometheus’ – that was so weird, like some literal nod to captain Dallas via the accent the name suggests (???), esp when he does a pretty flawless yankee american accent… if the make any more ‘shaft’ flicks idris would be cool

    having just seen ‘pac rim’, i thought it was a kick, the young teen mob i took really dug it (and the post-conversion 3D was surprisingly good, it’s not often i can say that)

    i liked the sheer unabashed hugeness and bursting energy and technicolor of it, with a bit of a messed-up del toro twist – del toro monster-movie manga, i can just picture him sketching out the kaiju in his little notebook, from his imagination to the screen; after the mostly joyless dirge that was ‘man of steel’ it was an exhilarating slap upside the head. the whines about whether it’s original or not seem pretty pointless really, as it’s clearly a manic homage to old-school giant monster flicks and anime mecha lore, etc etc, modern manga for the 21st century, and design-wise it’s different from the recent spate of cookie-cutter demolition flicks (i particularly liked the golden gate bridge and hong kong harbour sequences, but like i think it was christian who said above, it was a bit relentlessly dark and rainy, that was a drawback).

    i think the thing that could have made the movie more unique and compelling would have necessitated a brave choice by del toro, to switch it up and make mako the leader/protagonist instead of raleigh – kikuchi’s live-wire charisma leaves the rather bland hunman (or whatever his name is) in the dust, mako would been an exciting twist from all the increasingly boring boys of summer; i’m vaguely disappointed that del toro, who marches to his own drummer, didn’t go for this point of difference.

    as for the claims that the direction was ‘average’, well average is in the eye of the beholder but for me the shortcomings were more in the story and characterisations (writing), as an action movie it was fairly well-paced and coherent, the set-pieces and sequences overall were well staged and executed with a great sense of scale and spatial clarity, the characters connected and there was a palpable sense of camaraderie and purpose – in a godzilla vs the mechs movie like ‘pac rim’ that amounts to good directing in my book, some concepts were underdeveloped but overall i don’t think it was striving to be more than it was, the end game was well achieved. man of steel was average/mediocre, this was a big step up.

    And at least Bay had the balls to show off ILM’s brilliant work in broad day light compared to what Del Toro designs here.

    Must be Del Toro’s cred and the whole “has to be fun” bullshit I read online when it comes to these tent pole films.

    If anyone made this film as it stands today and Del Toro’s name was not on it and it was labeled a hollow remake of INDEPENDENCE DAY, this fucking thing would get killed.

    I’m completely out of step when it comes to good tent pole filmmaking now after the reaction to this film. Give me the ambition but don’t quite hit the mark filmmaking of MAN OF STEEL and LONE RANGER over this. And I generally love Del Toro’s work.

    This is easily his worse film by far.

    Oh, I’ve seen it. Took my 5 year-old to an afternoon show. He fucking loved this thing and has basically bugged me nonstop since Friday about making sure I get the DVD when it comes out.

    This might be his Star Wars so I’m not going to deny him that. For reference, he liked MAN OF STEEL as well. Superman’s first flight in that film, he loved the hell out of that. But, he liked RIM better.

    But damn, people are going to tell me this is better than Bay’s first TRANSFORMERS film? I know it’s been a while and two lousy sequels since that first film but watch that damn thing again. Cut two characters and cut the sequence at Sam’s house looking for the glasses and TRANSFORMERS is damn near Bay’s best film. Easily better than this shit.

    Yeah, it’s earnest with unabashed heroism that you can take the family to. But, screw that nonsense. That doesn’t excuse Del Toro going Cameron’s AVATAR on this film, in comparison to the work he’s done before this film. His BLADE 2 wipes the floor with this film.

    This “going to extremes” business has, I fear, been part of film criticism for at least two decades. Blogs, websites, posted comments, etc. have only made an already bad situation much, much worse. But even back in the early 90s, it already was disconcerting to see how many flawed but interesting/ambitious movies were roundly condemned as THE WORST HOLLYWOOD DISASTER OF ALL TIME, while other films were wildly overpraised as AN INSTANT CLASSIC THAT WILL LAST THROUGHOUT THE AGES. Seriously: I suspect the blurbing of movie reviews in TV ads (yes, even more than print ads) had something to do with this.

In my last column, i talked about how box office prognostication has become as important as criticism. That the perception of a film financially tanking before it’s release (John Carter, Lone Ranger, Pacific Rim) is often carried by thousands of outlets and becomes in its own way a form of criticism which keeps people away from buying tickets.

    Well here’s the thing. They never really get into the geography. The rift is in one place. The monsters come out. They head towards Alaska, they head towards Hong Kong. Seems to take them only seconds to get there. I’d think it would take them a few minutes or more to trek from the rift to whatever city they were attacking. Last time i checked, a submarine could launch an ICBM to a target in a ridiculously short amount of time. The film itself tells us a nuke can kill or at least severely maim these things. So why wouldnt you get your Navy a few miles out. The minute a kaiju pops on the radar, shower a few nukes in its direction.

    Theyve been testing nukes in the Pacific for a long time. Im not saying theyd bomb the city with nukes, but these things are at a fixed entry point in the middle of the ocean. So…. bombs away?

    And it goes back to the whole “building a wall” plot point. The script reads like it was written by a ten year old. Monsters show up so we build giant robots. The robots get beat so we start building a wall. The government decides to shut down the robot program even after a kaiju stomps through the wall? And why are the Jaegers the only things fighting the kaiju. Those planes and hellicopters shooting missiles at the monsters might help. And i wouldnt have thought that at first, but they have that stupid scene where the Brits go to the top of their Jaeger and shoot a flare gun in its eye.

    A flare gun.

    So im thinking maybe some armed helicopters or some A10 planes might be able to contribute, but it seems like every piece of technology stopped existing after they created the Jaegers.

    People want to crucify Transformers movies, but Pacific Rim is no better. Other than the fact that Del Toro seems like a nice guy and everyone wants to give him a pass while they enjoy calling Bay a douche.

    I guess this stuff really is eye of the beholder and all that because I didn’t get that at all. I thought Del Toro did a great job of showing us who was hitting who, how, and where. There’s only one major sequence in all of the Transformer movies where I got the same sense, the first sequel – the fight between Optimus and the Decepticons in the forest (terrific set piece). Fair enough on the nuke argument. Although as to why the helicopters weren’t firing at the Kaiju, the sense I got was that they were scouts. Firing at the monsters might have made them targets and thus “blind” the jaegars. Or not. I don’t know, it’s just not something that detracted enough for me to worry about.

    Yeah, script/storywise there were a couple of things that we were expected to overlook. Bombs or missiles when fired from a B-1 were very limited in effectiveness but the main problem was that the planes would get swatted down. I can forget that the planes can be a few miles away when launching but the finishing move of the robots was to fire bombs or missiles. What was so special about those??? BTW, it wasn’t so much a complaint of mine just more to make me wonder what age was this targeting.

    What else…Oh yeah! You know what was sort of realistic, I thought was the switch from robots to walls w/out real explanation. THAT is so typical of aerospace and defense contracts and direction. The DoD will switch from one type of plane or weapon and go with another 8-14 years later. Like the ditching of the shuttle program to something that’s essentially the Gemini program relaunched. What was the reason they switched from robots to walls? Halliburton convinced the world leaders theirs was the better option than JPL.

    Just got back from seeing this – OMG TEH DUM.

    It’s fun dumb, but this is honestly LESS thought through than Transformers 1. I had a MASSIVE grin on my face when Optimus brought out the “One shall rise, one shall fall” line, nothing close to that level of inner-child glee for this one.

    I agree with Anghus – where the hell was all the other global firepower? Not a single ship, plane, tank, or even a missile launcher on the fleet of a billion helicopters? How can everyone move between the various cities and the rift so fast? What the hell was everything standing on when combatants were leaping into and out of the water? If they were actually on the sea floor, how were the kaiju able to submerge in knee-deep water? Does every nuclear reactor come with a “turn here to turn into bomb” switch? I would have thought being a flip of a switch and 60 seconds away from being a bomb would be something you wouldn’t want to have as a feature of a reactor mounted on your chest when giant monsters are punching you. Why does the numbers science guy insist he was right, when he predicted the “3 kaiju event” as being about 10 events away in his list? How the fuck does a 200 foot tall robot survive a fall from 50,000 feet, and how the fuck did the kaiju get to 50,000 feet in 30 seconds with its tail cut off and half its jaw missing? Apparently it can fly straight up faster than the speed of sound? Why does drifting apparently allow people to “read my mind” in the opening sequence, and then later pilots not only have to tell each other what to do for the next attack, but also have to be told that the attack exists (i.e. sword). Why does drifting have a big sequence when they initiate the robot where the pilots are moving in sync, and then have them all acting independently later on? Why is it so hard to tell when pilots stop drifting – there seems to be no difference at all between when they are and when they aren’t? Why is Raleigh talking about how he “wandered in the wilderness after (his) brother was killed while they drifted” with a big goofy grin on his face? I really don’t feel that you went through any soul searching at all when you’ve got this perpetual “I can’t believe I’m being paid millions of dollars to be in this movie” smile. What the hell was with that “He looks different than I imagined” comment at the start? Was that supposed to be a joke?

    Having said that – Bay can’t begin to approach the humanity of two scenes. The oft-mentioned child-Mako scene, and the scene where the Aussies say goodbye. If they’d ditched Mr Dopey-Grin and gone with the Aussie guy as the lead, I personally think it would have improved the entire movie.

    Look, it’s a good movie – it’s fun, it’s got heart. But it’s dumb.

    I’m still pretty shocked by how many of you hated PACIFIC RIM but, whatever. I still loved it and can’t wait to see it again.

    Also- I mentioned I took a group of kids to see it last week and they LOVED it and all this week in this animation camp I’m running, it’s all PR references, all the time. The soundtrack is in constant rotation. Animated kaiju -vs-jaeger movies and art is being created. New stories about the jaeger pilots are getting made every day by these kids. They loved it and only about half of the kids in my class this week went to the movie with us last week. It’s finding an audience.

    So, even though many seem to dislike it and it’s not doing very well at the box office, it’s a huge success in terms of sparking imagination. I wish there was a better ancillary market….I also wish the film had been promoted better. Ah well.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
