Wilmington on Movies: A Million Ways to Die in the West

Hate to admit it, but I laughed fairly hard at parts of Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in The West, a sexed-up comedy Western with a foul-mouthed script and few inhibitions. Forgive me, John Ford. Forgive me, Howard Hawks. Forgive me, Sergio Leone. For that matter, forgive me, Mel Brooks.

Neighbors debuted at the top with an estimated $51 million. That didn’t leave a lot for the session’s two other freshmen. Faith-based comedy Moms’ Night Out slotted in position seven with $4.1 million, while animated family yarn Legends of Oz was right behind with $3.7 million. Neighbors was off to a solid start with $2.7 million from Thursday previews but the picture became clear when Saturday estimates showed the Seth Rogen-Zac Efron vehicle nearly doubling (with previews) the costumed crimefighter’s box office. It surprised the studio landing second (behind Ted) among biggest-ever-opening R-rated comedies.

Neighbors had the sixth best comedy opening day ever and the third best for an original. Extremely impressive. And if anyone tells you that they know what the final domestic is going to be based on this weekend, they are fools. The final domestic gross difference between, say, The Hangover and the stronger-opening Jackass 3-D was over $150 million. Amazing Spider-Man 2 has a reasonable 2nd Friday drop and looks to cross the $500 million mark worldwide by the end of the weekend.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 dominated the box office with an estimated $91.8 million opening that accounted for roughly 55% of all weekend sales. The web-slinger was the sole national newcomer… imagine that. Among exclusive openers there were a couple of bright lights. The Brit import Belle, centering on true-story historical racial discrimination, scored a solid $104,000 launch at four locations while acclaimed Polish drama Ida grossed $51,300 at three convents.

Spider-Man returns, $1.6 million behind Captain America‘s return a few weeks ago. What does it mean? Let the endless speculation begin! Elsewhere, The Grand Budapest Hotel passes $50 million. Ida and Kevin Spacey’s Acting Show have nice per-screens. And Belle is the belle of the indie ball with what looks to be a $20k+ per-screen weekend on 4 screens.
