Notable: Lou Lumenick tells the world that Alien v Predator and Freddy v Jason were actually the highest openers without screening before Ghost Rider. Noted.

That Ghost Rider number has to be bigger than anyone was expecting, right? Jeez. Has anyone seen it?
Meanwhile, Music and Lyrics seems to have underperformed a little. And will Norbit make it over $100m? Looks like it might just barely if it does.
I was really impressed by how well Ghost Rider, Terabithia and Breach did, especially considering how many new movies and competition there was for moviegoing audiences. (And it’s so cold here in NYC, I’m surprised anyone would even go out.)
That’s weird… I thought that I had a chance to see Alien vs. Predator before it opened, but that may have been a night-before preview screening, not necessarily for critics.
Interestingly, my experience at theatres in NYC has been almost the opposite of what those numbers would suggest–“Breach” has been a hot ticket (I saw a soldout show of it on the UES Saturday night, and it was selling out this afternoon at Union Square), while there were probably 20 folks in the auditorium where I saw “Ghost Rider” this afternoon (horrible flick, and the SFX aren’t even that good, but the sound on it was decidedly impressive).
Terabithia will probably go to 80-90, making a nice amount of money for the Mouse (if it holds up, it has an outside shot at 100M).
Music and Lyrics suffered because of Daddy’s Little Girls, which suffered because of Norbit. Had Lionsgate/Perry gone a week later (the weekend Perry has OWNED the past couple of years), I think they woulda done better.
Actually, I recall a press screening for Freddy Vs Jason that was held at least the Monday before it came out. Of course, it was a purer artistic achievment than “The Lost Biker of Cadavra”
Yeah, I distinctly remember attending a press screening of Freddy versus Jason, at the Beverly Center of all places. And running a review in the New Times LA in timely fashion.
Then again, Ghost Rider technically did screen…but only the night before opening. A minor distinction, but as a reviewer, I like that way better than a 10 am day-of “courtesy” screening.
I saw Ghost Rider.
It was so terrible. Like, laughably bad. Nic Cage looks like a heroin user slurring through his lines, making all sorts of weird faces.
Eva Mendes cannot act. She’s great to look at but has the emotional range of a sofa.
The story is all over the place. It makes so little sense that it almost felt insulting. It felt like one of those really bad horror films from the fifties where everyone either overacts or can’t act at all. Even the action scenes were incoherent.
I guess if i could give it one compliment, it would be “it was better than Daredevil”
Go Go Pan’s Labyrinth!! I just got the chance to see it. Unbelievable sad and somewhat happy at the same time. The girl who plays Ofelia was fantastic. I’ll even venture to say that she’s a lot better than the girl in Little Miss Sunshine.
I’m right there with you Polyp!
I finally got a chance to see Pan’s last night and all I can say is… WOW!!! How on earth are they going to choose a best FLF this year?! Between this and Lives of Others… (not to mention Days Of Glory which I also loved when I saw it all those months ago).
And yes, Ivana Baquero… much better than Abigail Breslin!
And that lullaby… how do you get it out of your head? It’s been stuck there for almost 24h now!!!
