Is Marion Cotillard REALLY as sure a thing as widely assumed? Shit, I see 100 movies a year (on my own dime), and I didn’t see that movie. What makes everyone so sure that Ernest Borgnine and Mickey Rooney did?
Much as I like Rice Pilaf, I have no idea who Edith Piaf is, and I don’t really care. And much as everyone enjoys the faux-shock “unknown foreigner” actress nominations, the movie didn’t do that well even by foreign/arthouse standards, did it?
On an unrelated note– any of you film geeky moviegoers, like me, having trouble getting your NON-INDUSTRY pals or significant others all fired up for THERE WILL BE BLOOD? I swear, I’ve explained what it is and how awesome it will be to countless people, particularly women, and each time all I get is crickets chirping.
Yes, again, it’s DDL/PTA and thus catnip to US, but a 3-hour EPIC ABOUT OIL set in WESTERN TIMES with NO WOMEN and NO CONCISE STORY HOOK– Man, even my film-savvy peers and pals, especially those back in flyover– they couldn’t give less of a shit.
There Will Be Blood? You mean the movie uniformally supported by the people who showed an early screening of it? Yeah… I have heard of it… but who wants to see it? Daniel Day Lewis chewing scenery has happened enough recently to make this movie a little less important than it should be. Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing it this year because LIMITED RELEASING still sucks.
That should be NEXT year due to me living in a city, that is apparently on the bottom of the list in terms of art film distribution. Thanks distributors. Thanks a lot.

I have the same problem– I’m in Milwaukee, and we don’t get TWBB until January 11.
Well, if it’s any consolation, I’d almost rather wait two weeks to see it in a a sparsely attended theater in a non-industry city with minimal interest in the film than the L.A. option– It’s in one theater, THE ARCLIGHT.
And don’t get me wrong, I love the Arclight, go there 30-some times a year. But for all its hype about being the movie lover’s mecca, at the holiday time of year, it’s as crowded with the same clueless, chattering, only-half-caring-about-the-movie idiots as any mall multiplex, all stuffed with turkey and holiday-irritable. Only difference is, you’re ASSIGNED to sit elbow-to-elbow with the hoi polloi, most of whom are leg-shakers and nose-breathers. Fuck, it takes 17 minutes for each ticket purchase in the line because the poor ticket kids have to explain that goddamn seating chart to all the unworthy who’ve never been there before and never will return, but will nicely fuck up the experience for anyone who actually cares about the goddamn movie.
it’s not just the holidays….the arclight is corrupted all year long…..one of the most irritating things is when the studios sched a screening at the arclight (yea!) and then paper the house with people who think they’re at citywalk (boo!)….and whatever happened to the ushers who used to try and maintain order (probably all stabbed or shot by now)……grrrr….
But at the Arclight, if you walk out and tell a staffer people are being, well, people, they will shine a flashlight on them and embarrass the hell out of em. And if they still don’t shut it, they boot em. I’ve seen it happen…and it’s awesome.
So apparently the Arclight is now charging $14 for all films until January 2nd, under something called a “holiday period”? What the fuck is that? As if I didn’t hate this theatre enough to begin with.
I’ve been wanting to see TWBB more than any film this year, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to give those bougie-catering bloodsuckers another dime of my money (I’ve only seen 2 films there to date, both exclusive showings). Now I have to leave town for work on the 1st and will be stuck in fucking Orlando waiting for it to open there. That’s okay, I can wait on principle.
If you think spending that kind of money for a movie is okay, or normal, then you’re part of the problem.
I visited the archlight to see if it was worth the hype, and it did not even live up to a Memphis theatre. It was that hokey. The popcorn was pretty good though, but I would have preferred a pizza. Why I can get a pizza in a Memphis theatre but not the Archlight still confounds me. Yes; the pizza is pretty good.
Lazarus: TWBB opens here, in Orlando, on 1/18.
The things that annoyed about US theaters when I lived there were unassigned seatings (you pick you seats here in Thailand) and the amount of food we bring into the cinemas. I mean, people were eating dinner in there. Don’t you guys find that irritating? The smell, the chewing noise… And the ticket price. It’s 120 Baht for a normal seat here (less than 4 USD) and about 160 for a bigger one (about 5 USD).
I haven’t seen any of the movies in the top-ten list in MCN. It’s sad and frustrating, but it’s life. You guys are much much luckier.
Yeah, but in Thailand you have to be like 40 years old before you’re allowed to see movies. And even then, I think you need to be accompanied by your parents.
Every time I go to the Arclight I don’t have any of the problems you guys are describing. As far as I’m concerned it’s the second best place to see movies in LA after the Vista.
I hate assigned seating. I went to a cinema I’d never been before to see Beowulf 3D and was thrown when asked where I wanted to sit. I ummed and ahhed and had no freakin’ idea. I didn’t know the size of the cinema or anything. I ended up with a shite seat and then moved to a better one as the trailers started.
Jeff, you should know by now that people blow these things out of proportion. One person indiscreetly looking at their phone to check the time turns into 50 15-year-old girls chatting non-stop on their phone for the entire running time.
And lastly – (pardon the language) Fuck Marion Cotillard and her unpleasantly hysteric hunchback wig-a-minute hobbit performance in that dreadful dreadful movie La Vie en Rose. Tell me – is Cotillard’s Efith Piaf the most irritating movie character of 2007? She SCREAMS! She CRIES! She LIPSYNCS! All at the volume of 110!
The Arclight sounds worse than the Manhattan theaters — sky-high prices all day long.
As to “holiday period”, lazarus: Xmas Week in a movie house = Saturday night every night. AMC charges evening prices after 4 PM every day of Xmas Week.
Gee, I’m getting the impression KamikazeCamel didn’t like La Vie En Rose.
I’m actually a little surprised, since it sounds very strong woman-centered and borderline camp.
And under most circumstances, I’d affectionately refer to the esteemed K-to-the-Camel’s pop-cultural tastes and opinions as, well, no offense, but… “the gayest gay that has ever gayed.”

Kurt Wimmer’s Edwin A. Salt script is hilarious. Something so simplistic and lame could be gold in the right hands. It even has that “gun-kata” bullshit from his other films. I almost wish Mann had jumped on and shot this script word-for-word. Now it’s in the hands of Mann Junior…
