Labor Day celebrations steered clear of the multiplex as The Hitman’s Bodyguard shot up its third weekend, with an estimated $10.3 million for the three-day portion of the extended weekend. There were no wide national releases but a couple of films debuted in a limited wide in what’s traditionally the year’s lowest-grossing holiday. The fortieth anniversary release of the 4K Close Encounters restoration opened in the lucky 13 spot with $1.8 million while the period thriller (as in the suspense over how long it’s taken to reach theaters) Tulip Fever grossed $1.2 million.

The second weekend of The Hitman’s Bodyguard led  with an estimated $9.9 million as summer ticket sales plunged to their lowest level in a decade. Among new releases, animated Leap! ranked third in the lineup with a $4.8 million debut and Bruce Lee biopic Birth of the Dragon struggled to $2.5 million. In medium-wide release, a crisis of faith and viewers for All Saints gave a $1.6 million kneel. The revival of Terminator 2 also failed to melt with a $572,000 tally from 386 stereoscopic engagements. There was a significant expansion for Wind River that held up comparatively well.

The debut of the larkish The Hitman’s Bodyguard led the weekend with an estimated $21.7 million during an overall summer slump. The session’s other national release, Logan Lucky – Steven Soderbergh’s latest heist caper – charted third with $8 million.

The debut of Annabelle: Creation scared up an estimated $35.1 million to claim the box office crown in an otherwise largely downbeat session. Another recycle The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature saw its $8.7 million debut plunge more than 50% from the prior 2014 animated foray and the adaptation of the confessional bestseller The Glass Castle bowed to a tepid $4.8 million.

The Dark Tower edged ahead to take the crown with an estimated $19.4 million. The session also saw two new companies debut their initial national releases. Aviron launched distaff actioner Kidnap to a decent box office of $10 million, slotting fifth. Annapurna’s critically acclaimed Detroit bowed way below expectations with $7.2 million following last weekend’s successful exclusive run on 20.

Dunkirk held onto the top spot at the weekend box office … but only barely. Christopher Nolan’s World War II episode grossed an estimated $27.8 million while incoming The Emoji Movie surprised naysayers with a $25.5 million debut. The frame’s other new national release, Atomic Blonde. charted fourth with $18.6 million.

The harbor town of Dunkerque provided filmmaker Christopher Nolan with a heady landing base as his Dunkirk topped weekend viewing with an estimated $50.6 million launch. Also bowing powerfully was the bawdy Girls Trip with $30.4 million. But it was just OK results for the third national newcomer,Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which ranked fifth in the lineup with $17.1 million.

Exclusives were led by indie comedy Landline with a solid start of $51,400 from four dial-ups.

War for the Planet of the Apes led weekend moviegoing with an estimated $56.3 million debut. The frame’s other national opener, horror tale Wish Upon barely registered with $5.5 million. But the national expansion of The Big Sick emerged as an effective counterprogrammer with a $7.6 million diagnosis.

Spinning to record highs, Spider-Man: Homecoming left the competition in the distance with an estimated $116.2 million debut. The absence of counter-programming again underlines the majors’ growing lack of confidence in that strategy.

A couple of exclusive debuts had encouraging starts, but only the meditative A Ghost Story raised goosebumps with a $106,000 launch from four hauntings. The slow rollout of The Big Sick continues as a commercial powerhouse, with $3.7 million from 326 screens. The season has also offered strong responses for Beatriz at Dinner, The Hero and Paris Can Wait. Canada has local heroes with Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 and Maudie.

Despicable Me 3 led holiday moviegoing with an estimated $75.4 million. There was also good news for counterprogrammer Baby Driver, which vroomed into second place with its $20.3 million opening. The session also saw significant expansions for Southern gothic The Beguiled and the cross-cultural rom-com The Big Sick. Beguiled went medium-wide to an upbeat $3.2 million. Sick, still limited, maintained a sturdy $23,660 average and $1.7 million tally. Also holding its own in slow roll out was The Hero, with takings of $890,000.

Transformers: The Last Knight led weekend moviegoing in its debut with an estimated $45.3 million. The alleged franchise “finale” was anticipated to be a commercial powerhouse with competition steering clear of its path … including counterprogrammers.

Cars 3 sped to the top of weekend moviegoing with an estimated $53.3 million. It was also good news for the Tupac bio All Eyez on Me that ranked third with $26.4 million. The other two national newcomers were less vibrant. The shark threat nail biter 47 Meters Down had an OK start of $10.9 million but the female rave Rough Night pancaked with an $8 million debut.

Wonder Woman lassoed top spot for a second weekend a with an estimated $57.5 million That was bad news for the high-profile The Mummy reboot that dug up only $32.2 million. The session featured two other national debuts: the spartan horror It Comes at Night ranked sixth with a chilly $5.9 million, while military pooch patrol Megan Leavey barked up $3.7 million.

Wonder Woman wowed with an estimated debut of $100.7 million to lead session movie going. It was also good news for the frame’s other national newcomer the animated Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie that bowed with $23.5 million to rank second overall.

Memorial Day Three-Day Estimates

Pirates are not all Dead Men with $76.8 million on 4,276, while Guardians Vol. 2 steams to $26.3 million on 3,871 for a $339.6 million cume. A quiet third, Baywatch proves not so biggle with its jiggle, $22.9 million on 3,647.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales easily led the Memorial holiday with an estimated $61.9 million debut during the three-day portion of the weekend. (All figures reflect 3-day box office; chart will be updated on Monday). The session’s other national opener — and alternative ocean-splasher — Baywatch had a less auspicious beach experience at $18.1 million.

On Friday, Disney also became the first distributor to cross the $1 billion threshold domestically — it was also first to the mark in 2016 but 19 days earlier — with Beauty and the Beast passing $500 million on Sunday. Internationally, The Fate of the Furious became 2017’s first $1 billion box office behemoth.

Alien: Covenant edged ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with an estimated $36.1 million to make off with a wobbling weekend box office crown. Teen romantic drama Everything, Everything won a distant third with $11.8 million and the latest episode of the Wimpy Kid franchise, the appropriately-entitled The Long Haul, bowed with a limpy $7.1 million.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 remained dominant in the marketplace with an estimated second weekend of $63.3 million. In the distance were the session’s two incoming national releases. Mother’s Day comedy adventure Snatched bowed to $17.4 million while King Arthur: Legend of the Sword put the morte in the fabled monarch with a $14.8 million debut.
